Favorite Movies of All Time

Just saw Sicko. Top honors from me. Thank you Michael Moore for exposing those pesticides!

The minuses I give to the movie are for when Moore was acting a bit clueless asking the interviewed people -- ohh, you don't have to pay anything for health care? -- while he had already researched the issue prior to going into their country, and knew what their answer will be.

Another problem I see is that some people see the movie for entertainment purposes... and he made it entertaining, just like he did with the 911 movie. The only reason I see to make a serious movie be entertaining is to sell more movies, because people will be more likely to watch entertaining movies, rather than serious documentaries.... Well, maybe I am wrong... maybe that is actually a way to promote your serious movie... to trick the mass audiences into watching it by making it entertaining... just like the TV News are nowadays.

You know, the studios won't finance his movies if it doesn't put the fannies in the seats. The movie studios don't care about the issues, just profits. If a profitable movie can also promote an important issue, so much the better, but it's not really a requirement. Now, making a film of any sort entertaining definitely does add to the bottom line.

Few days ago I saw The English Patient. I had never seen it before, but it was on my long list of movies to see. I lost sympathy for both main characters right from the beginning when they were starting to develop an affair behind the back of the woman’s husband/boyfriend. At that point to me they both belonged to an episode of the TV show Cheaters.

I recall that movie was big back in the days around 10-15 years ago or so. For me, as epic and emotional the story was, and on the verge of tears, at the end it didn’t fool me into sympathizing for both of them…. Although, I would’ve preferred if both of them remained alive at the end.

Just saw a couple of good japanese animation movies - very touching and well "acted", about the Hiroshima bombings.

- Barefoot Gen
