Fed Cup Now Billie Jean King Cup

I personally think it’s neither good or bad, I didn’t see a problem with the original and I don’t see a problem with the new one.

I don't like anything named after people, including streets, airports, schools etc. When the political winds change, it becomes an issue.

But Davis Cup was named after Dwight Davis, so makes sense to change Fed Cup's name too.

Davis Cup is named after its founder. Instead of featuring BJK in yet another name - like she needs any more recognition at this point - it would've been much better to honor the woman who was pivotal in establishing the women's DC counterpart, Mary Hare. But of course they'd rather stroke the old icon's fat ego.

Yeah BJK is over-represented everywhere. There is this clique of Evert-Austin-Shriver which seems to dominate commentary and ideas and frankly they look old and need to replaced with younger faces.

That is why I said I am opposed to naming anything after people, and erecting statues and monuments for them. It becomes a political tug-of-war after some time.

Female Cup would have been enough but people like @r2473 will make bad jokes

Good points, and in fact these kind of naming of events etc are almost controversial from the start, these days

Yes, BJK does not need more recognition. Hare should have been the one recognized for actually establishing the event, but yes, this seems like another attempt to give BJK some permanent (or one would think) title/forced accolade. There are other trailblazing female tennis players. The PTB should you know...look at a list, or something.

Yes--and their views usually lean hard toward players who remind them of themselves, as if tennis needs more of that.

Althea's bust has already been installed at the Open. It is not that other females have been forgotten.

King's association with the Fed Cup goes back to its founding, when she was a member of the U.S. team that won the inaugural tournament in 1963 at Queen's Club in London.

King, as a player and coach, won the Fed Cup trophy 10 times -- a record for an individual.

It is not that. It is a generational clique.

All 3 have been exceptional supporters of the Williams sisters, for example.

Austin has a history of saying awful things about the Williams sisters, particularly about their reaction to their sister's murder. To Austin, there was a point when the only thing coming out of her mouth with any positivity was directed at Capriati, Davenport, Lisa Raymond and anyone not named Williams.

Shriver has a history of flip-flopping about Serena, at one point cenebrating her, and in other periods criticizing anything she could think of.

It's just more virtue signaling from the USTA. Is there anything else they can think of to bring Bille Jean King's name up?
How about naming the hot dogs that you buy at the Billie Jean King tennis center Billie Jean King dogs?
How about a giant animatronic statue of Billie Jean King welcoming people to "Billie Jean King Land" as they enter the grounds at the US Open?
And then open the "Billie Jean World" tennis center in Florida where actors in Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King costumes run around the grounds
before Billy pushes the old wheezing Riggs over and poses for pictures, a foot on his prostrate body, to signal superiority so one misses
the point.

Hopefully this will inspire the top US women to play Fed Cup regularly.

I condemn this decision because I just can't stand the name of a person being attached to yet another tournament, who wants to deteriorate the men's tennis quality by pushing BO3 at majors, just because her agenda of "men and women both play equal tennis quality and deserve equal money" can be fulfilled.
The saddest thing about modern feminism is that it's turned into a big hypocrisy and all their agendas are intended to put the men down and eventually enslave them. They want to make women as carbon copies of men, and thus destroying the very core personality of women as well.

Women are already paid equally at majors even though they play only best of three.
Why does Billy care whether men play three or five? She needs to just stay in her lane.

Still she does. To silence the very relevant question of women bo3 vs men bo5, she wants to destroy men's tour by propagating bo3 there.
Its like for proving my bamboo frame structure is better than your Eiffel tower, I'll run a propaganda and bulldoze your structure down to my level.
That's the thing BJK wants

The Fed Cup was to remain the Fed Cup. I don't understand why anyone saw the need to change the established name.

I think all slams should be renamed to BJK Opens and main courts to BJK court #1, #2 etc.

It would be considered a small but necessary stop forward.

Thread bump!

This weekend it's the Play-offs, though I prefer the term Repechage.
The winners will play next edition's qualifying round.
The losers will drop to Group I.

Poland vs Brazil
Great Britain vs Mexico
Serbia vs Canada
Latvia vs India
Ukraine vs Japan
Romania vs Kazakhstan
Netherlands vs China

I think it's a bad idea to make it clash with the Monte Carlo Masters.

The idea of forced commemoration by naming tournaments after people is pretty disgusting. Dwight Davis actually established the Davis Cup to have it named after him, yet his legacy is much less respected.

It was ever thus. It's just that yesterday's politics is usually forgotten. Today's issues, not so much.

For people who ran Wimbledon, the definition of a gentleman didn't include getting paid for your work.

Its getting mighty hard these days to comment on tennis without touching on something deeply political.

A small correction, but I believe that it's Romania vs. Italy, and Argentina vs. Kazakhstan. Halep will miss the tie due to shoulder injury, so Romania-Italy looks very even now. Netherlands-China looks interesting.

I haven't really followed Podoroska much since her semi-final at RG as a qualifier last year, and she looks to have struggled for form lately on hard courts, but hopefully on clay she can help lead Argentina past Kazakhstan.

Japan won't have any of their 4 highest ranked players available, so their tie away to Ukraine could be a pretty huge mismatch.

In times of the name change, while of course King has contributed immensely (and that's an understatement) to women's tennis as a whole, and also to this competition and to the US Fed Cup team over the years (plus WTT forced the majors to get their acts together and start increasing prize money for both men and women), I also didn't agree with it. She has plenty of things named after her (deservedly so), but I think that this particular change equates to over-exposure and over-representation now.

If the competition had to be named after someone, I would have preferred it be either Mary Hare or Gladys Heldman.

I might as well use this thread to discuss the results over the weekend (it will probably take me quite a bit of time to get used to the new name and I'll probably continue to refer to it as the Fed Cup for a period).

Poland 3-2 Brazil
Serbia 0-4 Canada
Ukraine 4-0 Japan
Argentina 2-3 Kazakhstan
Great Britain 3-1 Mexico
Latvia 3-1 India
Romania 1-3 Italy
Netherlands 3-2 China

I was rooting for both Argentina and Brazil in their respective ties, but unfortunately they both lost their decisive doubles rubbers. Podoroska has struggled for form recently, and her losing both her matches on home soil was a shame. Hopefully things pick up for her soon.

Boulter has emerged as the leader of the GB team and really enjoys this competition, often saving her best tennis for it. Hopefully she can get back to WTA tour level soon.

Leylah Fernandez had a superb weekend for Canada winning both of her matches, on the back of her recent maiden WTA title win. Hopefully she continues to develop and progress.

And likewise Elisabetta Cocciaretto had the starring role for Italy.

Who would have known that Kazakhstan would have enough players to have a team, and to beat a team from Argentina? Did they stop playing tennis in South America?

B.J. King would be more respected if the gap between her calls for equal treatment of women wasn't nullified by her approval of women earning
equal pay for less work. Hypocrisy is like that.

The Americas Zone Group II is underway.

The Panamá event has 7 teams:

* Pool A: Bahamas, Uruguay, Costa Rica.
* Pool B: Ecuador, Cuba, El Salvador, Panamá.

The winners of each pool will play the final.

The Bolivia event, with 8 teams, has been postponed.
