Fed fans: let's console ourselves with this

Given there are already spoiler threads on GPPD, I figure this is ok

In spite of what happened today, Federer did better than almost all of us expected. He got to the SF at RG, his best result since 2012. I expected a QF or 4R. He gained 1080 points over the course of the clay season. A great achievement which will stand him well in the rankings. Fed has been playing well and hopefully will be fired up for the grass season.

And congratulations to Nadal. Truly the king of clay and vindicated here. I'm sure Nadal fans will be happy not to have to listen to 'Nadal hasn't beaten Federer in 5 years' anymore. Even for me as a Fed fan, that was getting tiresome.

Disappointing this match couldn't be closer but hoping for an exciting final

Federer will always have his 2009 FO. Losing at the FO matters no more. It all about the other 3 majors.

Now best case scenario would be Thiem beating Djokovic and Nadal.

If this happened to Djokovic Nadal match, I would be pissed. Roland Garros failed big several times in just 2 weeks. (Draws, Roof, Lights, Scheduling, not playable conditions) This is not acceptable for Grand Slam event.

This clay season has been a complete success for Federer. Federer played at a ridiculously high level for his age. Almost no one expected Federer to reach the semis being almost 38. And he produced some magic in his road to the semis, with his impressive victory over Wawrinka.

I think the universal consensus will be that Federer should come back to clay next year. Federer is still solid on the surface, and made beatiful points with the combination of serve + volley + drop shots + backhand slices.

Federer did great this clay run. Definitely see him as a big favorite at Wimbledon and US Open. (Nadal fan)

He certainly did better than I expected. Much better than his 2015 season. Was great to watch him. And in the end, isn't that what it's all about? I had a great time watching Fed this clay season. His decent(for him) results are just the cherry on the top

Unfortunately it will likely happens and probably Nadal might have another RG title.
Let it go and Just starts to pray for Wimbledon.
Clay is not for Federer. I think he achieved his expectation even though he could not push more for Nadal match.

Im going to wipe myself out with a 6 pack of vanilla up&go drinks. Lets be honest, clay isn't even real tennis anyway.

I disagree. Fed acquitted himself beautifully on clay. He getting to a french semi final and losing to Nadal there is nothing to sneeze at. The rest of his clay court season was solid as well. He had match points on his racket vs Thiem, beat a top 15 up and comer in Coric, beat #18 Monfils. He did some good things. I think he should always show up because you never know when someone might upset Nadal or Djokovic and completely change the math even if he's unlikely to do it himself. You get Roger to a final vs someone like Theim or basically anyone that's not been there and he's got a real chance to Soderling himself to another FO when he's playing like a top 3 player in the world.

Disagree what?
I never said he played badly for clay season. I was trying to point that clay is not the favorite surface to win against Nadal.
I already said he achieved his goal for this clay season and played decent tennis for this clay season.

No matter what anyone says.

Winning 9 games in a slam must be pretty disappointing and can result in confidence issues.

Hopefully he doesn't take it badly like RG 2008(letting it affect him on other surfaces)

the way some fans were going at it i think they would have valued beatiing nadal here more and losing in the final than his actual 1 french open slam.

He didn't get embarrassed today, and that's really all I could ask for (although I was really hoping for a set). On a day with brutal groundstroke conditions, he managed to at least hold his own on a day when his serve wasn't even clicking, even securing a couple breaks. He asked many questions of Nadal today, and credit to Rafa, he came up with all the answers.

I thought it was a mistake to play clay, but thankfully it doesn't seem like he developed any physical issues this month and will be good to go for the grass season. Just hope he doesn't wear out even earlier at the end of the year.

Fair enough, just assumed you might be in the camp that says he should never play on clay again in his life. There are still a lot of them out there.

He should have played well with the mugs he faced in the first 4 rounds. Lets face it, younger players dont have game they just bash balls. The dont mix spin well with their serves and they cant volley at all, which is the main reason they cant beat 3 old men.

Well I'm pleased he managed to beat Wawrinka too. Yes, Stan was tired after the Tsitsipas match, but Fed played some solid tennis. A lot better than what I had been expecting

I think 2020 depends on how he is physically at the time, but if his game is still there and no problems with his body then he can certainly play clay. Though he has no chance to win RG so it's just about gaining some points and match play. Madrid he could have a shot at winning though

All for nothing. Roger himself has said that he plays for titles these days.
Disagree here, it wasn't "all for nothing."

He leaves Paris with 720 additional points and if Nadal doesn't win on Sunday and doesn't get to the semis at Wimbledon, Roger will be ranked #2 for awhile. While I think his chances of winning the USO are remote, a #2 seed will be big for him there. At 38, he's never going to beat both Rafa and Djokovic back to back. A #2 seed assures him of only having to potentially face one of them. And if Rafa fails to defend his title on Sunday, Roger will be seeded #2 at Wimbledon. That wouldn't have happened had he not gained 1080 points on clay this season.

Absolutely! My goal for him on clay was to gain 500 points and he bagged more than twice that. The last time a 37 year old made it to the FO semis was 1972. His run at RG was magical and enthralling. His loss today didn't sting at all, it was expected and no shame losing to the greatest player ever on this surface.

Last year he got the same points from winning the AO, which is better than getting them from Miami and the clay season .
Right now he has to rely on RAFA losing a FO final. If Novak makes the final and wins the media and fan attention will be annoying and more importantly he'll shorten the slam gap and increases his chances of passing #1 weeks record. And two slam gap with RAFA would be annoying at minimum it needs to be 3.

"which is better" lol. Like he planned to not win the AO at the beginning of the year.

Also, he looked pretty rusty at the beginning of the too short grass "season" last year and playing the clay will really help with that.
