Fed hinting at retiring after Wimby 2020?

Hey Federer fans, he isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future, I'm saying that he could carry on into his 40s if he keeps healthy. Form is temporary, class is permanent.

Federer won't retire while Novak and Rafa are still playing. He knows his slam count is in danger of being surpassed -- that is what's driving him to continue playing, and not for the "love of the game" bullsh*t. He will do everything that he can to protect his record, which probably means he will play on well into his forties.

Roger wants another chance to compete in the Olympics so he'll play til then next year, I'm sure, given 100% fitness. At the end of 2020, he'll be 39. He'll assess his future playing situation as the year closes to an end, I guess

He just played a five hour marathon final against one og the GOAT contenders. He is in top physical shape and is good enough form to win biggest of the titles. Why should he retire?

The idea of Federer retiring feels like a miracle to me and you know, miracles aren’t daily occurrence.

He’s definitely trying to save his legacy but I think he loves the game too. I think he gets a lot of support from fans that keeps him going; otherwise, I don’t think he would have sustained this long.

You can't really quit when you're still kicking Rafa's rear on grass and hardourts at age 38. LOL
So did Lukas Rosol, Steve Darcis, Dustin Brown and Giles Muller :)
Does Federer really want to be grouped with those guys?
Rafa is supposed to lose at Wimbledon, its a nightmare for him, because who wins Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back?
You'd have to be in your absolute physical prime to do that.
Also, in this year's Wimbledon Semi, who had the most lopsided set? Rafa won the 2nd Set 6-1, after Federer needed a tie-breaker to win the 1st Set!

That´s a very big if...

Rafa winning AO? Not a chance.
Actually Rafa couldn't even practice his defense in January, because he was recovering from ankle surgery......and he still won 18 sets in a row at the AO!
Sorry, but Rafa definitely has a chance of winning the AO :)

Agree. I don’t think many realize how difficult it is to win RG and Wimbledon back to back and the fact that, Nadal tends to win majority of the clay tournaments during the clay season year after year. It’s not only taxing but also to go from super slow to grass which is still on the faster side is not simple. He deserves a lot of credit for winning Wimbledon and not just one time - as opposed to Federer and Djokovic who won RG only once.

Been saying this for a while now (with much flack from die hards), but everything times out correctly for him. Still believe he will announce his retirement at Laver in his home country and 2020 will be one money making farewell tour for Fed, all associated tournaments, and the ATP. Puts me in a weird place though, since I want Nadal to win AO, but would love to see Fed take another...just cuz.

We will see.

EDIT: Interesting, my thread about Fed annoucing his retirement at Laver was deleted. This place is interesting.

Why not? He's currently the second favorite to win. Certainly better the 'not a chance.'
In the age of Novak being second favourite, you might as well be 15th favourite. Kinda like being second or third favourite for FO. Besides, he is third favourite, since RF beats him on non-clay.

Not to mention the curse he´s had at AO since a decade.

Sportsbooks say you're wrong. Nadal is +300 and Federer is +550 to win AO. This whole non-clay is nonsense. Federer wins a match on grass and suddenly he's a lock on a hard court?

Unless he is suddenly physically shot somehow... I doubt he retires. The slam race is too close that he'll play on as long as he has a sliver of a chance AT Wimbledon

Doesn't make sense; why would he skip Olympics?
And then after Olympics, why would he not go to ATP Basel one last time?
And if he does that, why not try your hand at another World Tour Finals?
My guess is that Fed will keep playing until he's out of the top 8 and hasn't reached a slam quarterfinal in a whole year

So it's actually a knock on Fed that he beat Rafa at Wimbledon, because a bunch of third-rate players also did it? That makes zero sense lol
It may not make sense, but its factually correct :)

Djokovic is completely unreliable these days, he goes from winning Wimbledon with superb feats of endurance, to not even being able to survive ONE week at the US Open.
The clown is a ticking time-bomb, and if you are 2nd favorite to win the AO, you probably will win it :)

Fed will never quit while Nadal is winning slams.
If Federer retires now, it'll be because he doesn't want to be on the tour when Rafa overtakes him.
That way Federer can say "Who knows how many I would have won if I'd played longer...." :)
Also, maybe Federer doesn't want to face the pressure of playing for the record at every slam....

Nadal has lost all 4 of the last of his 4 AO finales. Do you realize how nervous he will be in the finale if he once again reaches it and has to play Novak or RF both of whom own him now on non-clay in recent years?

He has already shown this nervousness in AO19 finale. Next time he´ll be even worse.

For so many reasons he is not my favourite for AO. Not interested in what rankings or betting houses say.

So how do you explain Rafa losing all 4 of his last 4 finales, not winning the title since 2009?

He has an excuse for 2014, but zero excuses for completely failing to clutch or deliver in 12, 17 and 19.

Now I remember our bet ;)
Shall we do it again?

Rafa will go further in AO than Federer. He will beat Federer in SF if Fed gets Rafas half.

You really like losing bets, huh?

OK. I won´t bet that Rafa won´t go further, coz he might, but I will bet that if they play he will lose to RF. And/or Novak. There is just no way he will reverse the last 5 years where he´s been losing to those two on HC, without exception.

You lost the one we had before USO.
Im willing to do the exact same bet for AO. Even though AO courts less suitable for Rafa than USO. (or were you also one of those saying USO this year was really fast w low bounce? :p :-D I cant recall.)

Im not betting on Rafa Novak obviously. Only Rafa Federer. I bet Rafa will go further than Federer. He will also beat Fed if they meet in SF or F. Im pretty much agreeing w the oddsmakers again. And you dont. So here we are another time ;)

Well, dunno what we bet on...

I was sure Rafa wouldn´t win USO, but in my defense I couldn´t know that both Novak and RF would get injured. If only one of them had not been injured and had beaten Medvedev they´d have definitely beaten Rafa.

You didnt agree on Rafa had higher odds than Federer to win USO.
I hope you didnt put any money on him ;)
Federer hasnt won USO in 11 years. Rafa had won it 3 times since then(now 4 of course). USO courts are the perfect HC for Rafa.
Injury is just an excuse. Novak was already injured in Wimbledon, he got a chronic injury going back and forth. Just as w Rafa. Federer wasnt injured per se. They always have some kind of injury.
Going from results on USO courts and Rafa.. You have to see the full picture. Court by court.

I dont think Federer plays as well as last year, so I would bet on Rafa in a Fedal match on AO courts. Im ready to make that bet again.

RF has several pigeons and one of his most pigeonic pigeon is a Bulgarian pigeon called Dimitrov. There is no question at all that he´d have beaten him if he´d not been injured. This is not even up for a debate.

I don´t get your logic though. You are saying Rafa can win AO which he hasn´t won since 2009 yet somehow you use the argument that RF can´t win USO coz he hasn´t won it since 2008. That´s a contradiction.

Im not saying he will beat Novak!!
Im just saying he will beat Federer. Read what I wrote.
Well you lost your bet and you come w excuses. You lost the bet. You hanged on w that even after 2 rounds.

Lets do this for AO too? Btw, you have to do prediction league to prove your amazing prediction skills now, right?

I never even mentioned Novak in that post.

But you still have to explain the logic that RF can´t win USO coz he hasn´t done it in 11 years, but somehow that rule does not apply to Rafa for AO.

In this decade 9 out of 10 AOs were won by Djokovic and RF. So how can Rafa possibly do anything there against two players who own him on HC since 5 years now?

Of course Rafa won´t beat RF in AO. Not a friggin´ chance. He got very lucky at USO not having to play his biggest rivals.

Are we on for another bet then?

No, I dont feel like explaining it more. USO courts suits Rafa more than any court beside clay. Thats that.
