Fed-Nal Dispute in 3rd Set at 5-2- what happened?

I didn't record the match and thought there was a critical moment in the match in the third set at 5-2 Nalbandian leading and serving where Federer got pissed about an overrule or something and DID SOMETHING, like whacked a ball at Nalbandian or something, something seemingly uncharacteristic. He thereafter had a little break-down in his mental game which I think was a large part of the reason he lost.

I thought this was a key point in the match because Federer got really, really charged up and picked up his level of play immediately *and irrationally* since he was down 5-2 in that set and down in the game and had no good chance of taking the set *and he had been WISELY in energy conservation mode. Anyway, it went onto like a giant series of deuces with Nalbandian hanging in there even though Federer was clearly trying to send a message about how he was the better player.

FEDERER FAILED TO SEND THE MESSAGE, Nalbandian held in there and won the set 6-2 without giving up that game.

I think this really messed up the Federer plan because prior to this he had been planning to give up the 3rd set and take the fourth, but with all the energy he expended in that game, at the beginning of the fourth I think he was surprised to find he just didn't have it anymore.

So anyway, I think this was a clear psychological as well as physical moment in the match, BUT I MISSED WHAT HAPPENED OR WHAT MADE FEDERER UPSET AND HOW HE LASHED OUT.

I saw the full match and basically Fed was getting fed up with Nalbandian disputing all the calls. Federer had no reason for lashing out as Nalbandian had consistently got bad calls in sets 1,2 and 3. If anything Nalby was justified to blow his top as the umpire had overulled on line calls further from him on numerous occasions.

It seems that Fed was getting frustrated and vented his anger and add to the fact that Fed and Nalby have a deep history going back to the juniors where Nalby beat Fed for the US Open and as we all know has a winning record over Fed in the seniors. It is well known that Fed does not really like Nalby, after all would u like someone who has your number.

Specifically, Rog got mad when Nalbo stood still at the baseline, looking at the ump, and waiting for him to overrule what was a Federer winner right on the line (replays showed the call was good and Nalbo was wrong this time). In other words, Rog did not want the call to be changed, he just didn't like Nalbo's attitude. (The previous post may be right about Rog disliking Nalbo, being one of the few guys in the business to have a winning record against him)

This time Nalbo got nailed by bad calls more than once. He does not really have an easygoing personality and often feels all the dubious calls go against him. And he may have been partially right this time. But bad calls did not decide the match anyway.

Alot of players don't like it when opponents constantly complain about calls because they feel the opponents are trying to influence future close calls. Coria does it all the time, which is probably why some players dont like him. Coaches in basketball & football do it all the time.

Also, Fed sat down in a match against Soderling this year I think because of the same reason. Are you gonna say it was because Soderling has a winning record against him too.

And so what Nalbandian has a winning record against him. Fed had beaten him 4 times in a row, and the main reason Nalbandian won was because of the time Fed missed due to his ankle injury, and Fed should have won the match.

And I wouldn't say Nalbandian has Fed's #. Jrs dont really count anymore after you have beaten someone 4 times in a row, plus clearly outperformed them in the pros. Their head to head is only 6-4, and it should be 5-5.

Lastly, Fed owns Roddick, Hewitt, & Agassi. I wouldnt say Roddick, Hewitt, or Agassi dislike Fed.

I love David Nalbandians game and, attitude aside, really enjoy watching him play. However, I am getting pretty tired of hearing about Nalbandians "winning record" when three of the wins were in the juniors. Federer is 4 and 1 over David since Masters Cup 03, About the same time he ascended to #1. What happened in the juniors is IRRELEVANT.

The ATP records show 6-4 in favor of Nalby in head to heads. Those results do not include junior scores. If they did, all of Rafa's results to date would be considered "junior" results.

These stats show the results for Fed/Nalbandian since they turned pro on the adult tour:

it was interesting becasue that point in partticular the ball hit the back edge of the line and nalbandian stopped but didn't actually say anything or turn around to dispute the point but turned around when he heard roger scream he looked puzzled. The crowd began to whsitle and all that. I just think he was fed up of nalbandian complaining bout line calls but there was one really bad call for nalbandian when was give 40-15 on a ball than landed way inside, it sounded as though it was a let but umpire called it out. I think david had was more calls aganist him. Looks like when feds is being out played he gets angered i think he expects so mcuh beta from himself don't really blame him

That's not really the reason. Coria often calls the trainer for "injury treatment" when he is losing, only to return in perfect shape, sometimes to come back for the win. You could have given him the benefit of the doubt the first time, but after it became a habit most players think it's plain gamesmanship. For the record, nobody despises him more than his countryman Gaudio.

Nalbandian didn't constantly dispute calls during the match. Give him one or two at least! The umpire was overrule crazy that night too and that disturbed both players at times. I guess Fed got back at Nalb when he hit im the butt with an overhead.

I think you may have the moment I'm referring to. What did Fed *do* exactly, I was under the impression he whacked a ball or something, but maybe he was just swearing or yelling at the ump or something??

I believe Nalbandian got the brunt of the bad calls, at least according to the "shot spot" thing on the American broadcast. By my count, he was at least 2 or 3 ahead in the bad calls department, though Fed got a couple as well. Significantly, Nalbandian got a bad call in one of those first two set tiebreakers that would have put him at 6-4 with two set points and instead he was at 5-5 and Fed ended up winning the breaker. Nalbandian did show a little sign of giving up in frustration during that breaker and I thought he was probably gone for the match at that point - what a surprise though, he fought very hard and deserved the win.

He just took a couple steps towards the net and said something. I'm not really great at reading lips in German? English? French? whatever Rog speaks when he's mad... but he looked pissed at Nalbandian. He didn't whack the ball.

If there's one positive for Nalbo is his mental toughness. He has a history of raising his game a few notches under adverse conditions. Not all fans care for Davis Cup, but not too long ago he beat Hewitt in Australian grass, and the more Hew did his trademark pumping fist cmawwwnnnn, the harder Nalbo played.

Nalbandian was gaming it up throughout the match. I was surprised to see this actually bother Fed. It was obvious that in the 3rd and 4th sets that Fed was irritated with what Nalbandian was doing.

When Agassi played Coria at the Italian Open this year he had issues with the way Coria was constantly questioning calls, and how he was asking Agassi how he saw some of the balls he was questioning. Sometimes players will check the mark themselves, like Roddick's famous incident on matchpoint, but Agassi refused. I'm sure it was mentioned in the press conference afterwards, plus the commentators mentioned it during the match also.

I am a huge Roger fan, and I didn't see the match, but one thing I want to point out is that this isn't the first time this happened.

Last year, during their encounter at AO 04, when David disputed a line call, Roger laid out his hands as to say "Can you stop doing that please?"

I think he is just irritated by David's game in general, cause he is one of the few players that can actually give him a lot of trouble, and the fact that sometimes David argues with line calls in their matches doesn't help the case. But I think it's just a thing at the spur of the moment. I don't think they are friends off the court, but I don't think they hate each other either.

What Roger did: with Nalbandian serving for the third set at 5-2, 15-30, Roger hit the shot that landed on the sideline. Then, as he walked along the baseline, he threw his hand up and out at Nalbandian and shouted something very much like "shut". It was one, single, loud word. He was pissed.

Federer started to feel fatigued in the middle of the third set. No doubt he was pissed about that as well a Nalbandian. The chair umpire overruled a few calls, correctly, early in the match but he kept doing it and had missed two or three in a row by the end of the third set. Another reason to be pissed.

I think Fed was fed up with Nalby's game, particularly the drop shots. I think that also contributed to the outburst. Everytime Fed couldn't reach a drop shot, he was not very pleased and sometimes whacked the ball into the net.

very true he had to vent his frustration on something. The umpire was on some line calling trip, they were some balls that landed rite on the line he called them out, the time when feds scremed D.N didn't even question the call. Thats the name of the game though take the good with the bad.

Whatever. Of course Nalbandian did something. Fed would not have reacted the way he did after hitting a winner if Nalbandian hadnt done anything. If I remember correctly, Nalbandian put both of his hands up to his head and turned to the umpire with a look of disbelief that there wasnt a call. Obvu=iously you're a huge Nalbandian fan, you've been all over every thread posting the same thing repetitively.

Bottom line.

Nalby got as mentioned got a raw deal in relation to the calls and at crucial times in both tiebreakers.

Fed was IMHO was frustrated at the fact that in the 3rd set he was down 5-2 and had been playing 3 sets with the inevitable 4 set for about 3 hours. Add the fact that Nalby had played great and Fed was tiring then factor in the h2h between the two and one can presume Fed was worried.

There are loads of players that question calls like Coria or guys that do irritable things like Hewitt who Fed plays and beats on a consisitent basis but you have to believe that Nalby gives Fed problems despite fed's 4 consective wins and that may be the reason why Fed dreacted that way when he does not do that when playing Hewitt with all his 'C'mons' and Coria's protestations to line judges.

Nobody's following you idiot. U just happen to post in the threads I read, so I feel compelled to disagree with you. This is the 2nd time you've posted that stupid 'stop following me' comment.

First, Fed's layoff had nothing to do with the match.

Now Nalbandian did absolutely nothing for Fed to get irritated, didnt question the call or anything.

I dont know what match you were watching.

You're fast beconing Barry jr. Hope you're proud of your achievement.
