'...if you show the match', he refers to ESPN's tape delay of the night match tonight. and then follows up by saying '.. it would be better if it was live'.

He needs something to do as he is changing nappies - why not catch the match at the same time? This is the jist of what he said, by the way.

I doubt Federer knows anything about ESPN's coverage. He was probably just making a friendly joke that, to the audience that knows the truth of the situation, turned out to be a lot funnier than it actually was.

Perhaps he wanted to catch the Nadal match last night and was disappointed instead?

rofl yes, little league baseball, what a disgrace.

They should be showing every match of the GOAT tennis player, it will be a lost opportunity after he retires.

Who cares about the millions of tennis fans you're alienating when you have Japan and Saudi Arabia to show? :???:

Being one of the heads of the Players Union, I GUARANTEE that he knows exactly when each match is televised. I think this was the Player's Union making a statement about delayed coverage of a Master's 1000 event.

for the record, tennis stops after every point as well...

but it doesn't stop for two minutes for the players to grab each other's asses and bend over in front of each other-getting into a thinly disguised mounting posture.

and all this after exerting a ridiculous amount of effort to place their skinned ball in the other guy's endzone.

The time between pts in Nadal matches is longer than the time between plays in the NFL. The NFL has a 40 second play clock, Nadal and Djokovic were routinely going to at least 45 seconds in their Madrid match.

that's why I don't watch matches between these two exceptions
how common is it in football, for the series of events to go on like that?

Football is usually 30 sec between plays. Not much different from tennis, where guys routinely go over the 20 sec time rule.

well ESPN doesnt get much of football coverage, so we arent missing anything there. the major market stations own about 95% of the rights to all football games.

You're interjecting Truth into this kid's childish rant? Why? :)

I've ragged on ESPN plenty too. But at least they're showing tennis. Don't be so sure that anyone else would. I assume Tennis Channel doesn't have the funding - otherwise they'd have a lot more ATP events - and not as many WTA.

I like Rog's dig. Sly without being petty or outright mean. ESPN does need to launch ESPN3 - they do have too much product. And again I hate to be the bearer of bad news - but the LLWS, like poker and drag racing, probably gets better ratings. And I blame the ATP for that - need to get the players out there more.

They have a maid who traveled with them on private jet from Europe. So I doubt he will be changing nappies.

I wonder what % of that match was actually tennis. Actually I wonder that about any match. I think the time between points usually takes up more time than the tennis itself!

It was cool to see how genuinely excited the crowd got when Fed appeared... how they were hanging on his every word, people standing around with grins fixed to their faces... Agassi was the last player I can remember who had this effect on people. Nadal, Sampras, Hewitt, etc, they were all just dumb jocks, dorks with no charisma. Then he hung out and signed autographs.

whoa whoa whoa..stop right there..I Love Tennis, but don't you hate on football.

+1000

dont hate on football, i love tennis, but football is the number 1 love. i can hate on soccer, which most people love by saying all they do is walk around or jog... unless they have the ball there basically just standing around, and even if they have the ball half the time there just barely moving.

yo

fed wasnt standing up for the ATP or anyone else he was looking out for himself. cahill just said it he wanted to watch the match live at his crib with his kids and not a tape delay. so according to cahill he has to stay at the tennis center to be able to watch the match and not relaxing at home.

kevvycore

Rookie
well can you disagree with him? i mean, if its tape delayed he has to stay up later to watch it also.

no way i totally understand. just pointing out that hes not really speaking for anyone but himself. some guys were saying he was talking for the ATP and other people when he really wasnt.

yeah i heard that shot at espn

i wish they'd push for the sport more, but i can't blame them due to the lack of americans having success at the slams

it's all about ratings...get tennis tv ratings up in u.s. and espn will show live tennis. I really don't care about watching it on tv, i would much rather be hitting my inside-out forehand or down the line backhand...:)

The little league world series which was shown before Nadals match has priority over tennis because they produce higher ratings. ESPN is going to give priority to whichever product produces higher ratings and unfortunately its not tennis unless its a grand slam. The little league world series only goes on in August so obviously they are going to get decent ratings.
