Fed withdraws from ATP CUP ..

ATP should now do the right thing and withdraw the official status from Laver Cup and delete the ridiculous retroactive head to head stats from their official record. Federer's participation in the ATP cup was the reason why it was made official in the first place.

Fine decision.
It's always better finish year with last tournament won. What?????
Ok,I admit Kyrgios is truly nasty persona in today's tennis.
Nobody comes close to this spoiled brat.

But it's kind of obvious that his beefs are with others also quite sometimes bad attitude players,

Nadal
Djokovic
Hewitt
Ruud
Tsitsipas

All of them are quite unpleasant persons at times.
What makes me think you don't know what you are talking about?

Never mind. Fedr will still win the fans' favourite and sportsman of the year awards.

Still like him to play something leading into AO.

Hopman was perfect.
Agreed that HC was perfect. But there's no HC edition this year, so Fedr's playing the China exo from December 27-29 as AO20 prep, then likely fly home to chill with the family for 2 weeks, then fly to Australia a week ahead of AO20. Boom, no fatigue, ready to go, as mentioned in his official statement.
He wants AO20 ;).

The organisers were charging a premium for Tickets covering the Matches involving the Big 4 players.

Many people who purchased tickets on the basis that they were going to see Federer are going to be very annoyed that they were shafted.

I trust Federer isn't going play a Tournament elsewhere over that period. That will really peeve a lot of people off.

He'll be playing an exhibition in Papua New Guinea.

I heard that Tennis Australia had layed a test GreenSet Hard Court in Port Moresby.

So it makes sense that Federer will go there to test it out before hitting Melbourne Park.

Perhaps the ATP Cup organisers will put on a Cruise Ship for all those disgruntled ticket holders. Only takes about 12 hours to get from Brisvegas to PM by Sea.

While I think this is an extremely sensible decision there was a fan on here saying that he was actually charged more for the tickets to watch the Switzerland games than the other matches.

So I really, really, hope this was genuinely a late decision. If there was an extra cost to the Switzerland games I very much hope the ATP will refund that part of the cost to the ticket buyers, unless they're going to pretend that it was Henri Laaksonen that was the main attraction.

That is correct.

The Ticket Pricing was structured consistent with the expectation that the Top players would play certain matches. So tickets for matches involving Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray were more expensive than most other matches.

IMO, this in itself was wrong and makes a mockery of the Event to some extent.

I know some fans that booked airline tickets and Hotel accommodation well in advance with the expectation that Federer was going to be playing. It is wrong that players can simply pull out on a whim like that. Federer should not have indicated he was going to play unless he was certain of doing so. He should have told everyone that he would consider playing the event and would confirm it by a set date. At least that way, fans could have had some flexibility.

The big question now though, as Federer has pulled out of the event, will we see Nadal and Djokovic follow his lead?

so the other Swiss players are out too now?
Yes. Switzerland will not be competing in the event. It received an automatic Qualification into the Event on the basis of Federer's ATP Ranking. With Federer withdrawing, Switzerland no longer benefit from the automatic Qualification. It now gives other Nations an opportunity to Qualify.

Who will take part in the ATP Cup?
There will be 24 nations selected to take part in the inaugural ATP Cup. The teams that participate are determined by the singles ranking of their best player, with each team featuring between three and five players.

For a country to qualify, it must have at least three players with an ATP ranking, and two of them must be singles rankings.

I totally agree. If you're going to charge more for certain matches SPECIFICALLY to enable people to see certain players then morally you have to refund the difference if those players don't appear. There's no other way round that.

I really do hope this was a genuine late decision from Federer. Because in this case you wouldn't have to be at the paranoid end of Nolefam to see other explanations.

Maybe he'll do what the Williams sisters do and only play the slams and a warm up tournament or two. So he could invariably play 9 tournaments for 2020. The 4 slams, 4 warm up tournaments and Laver Cup. He'll rely on his connections to get a wild card or special seeding to get into the tournies. I'm being sarcastic. Federer is too stand up of a guy to pull something like that.

He will play Basel and Dubai , which are not slam lead ups

For Fed , it is a matter of heart over mind as to what he plays . Rankings , titles and points are secondary

I would imagine it is. Roger will be 38 1/2 years old when the ATP Cup is staged. If he wants to extend his Pro Career to the max he would be making decisions on a week by week basis now.

He has stated he wants to play at the Tokyo Olympics. A lot of things can happen to a guy in his late 30s between now and then next year. So I can certainly understand that every week he does not play probably adds another week to his career at the other end.

It's not his fault that the money grubbing Tournament organisers want to milk the fans for everything they have. Has been that way for quite some time.

I just feel sorry for those fans that have spent thousands of dollars in travel costs, hotel accommodation and event tickets on the assumption they were going to see Federer.

It sounds to me that he is under pressure to spend more time with his family. If he carries on like this, his daughters would have married and left home by the time he hangs up his racquet.

That remains a very real possibility, ATP Cup or not. ;)

Federer is not going to be able to keep his slam and #1 record so he might as well call it a career now. He will still 'win' the fans' favourite and sportsmanship awards for ever.

The competition that doesn't even start til January? He's already withdrawn and it's only October? Does that mean he's also out of the ATP Finals?

This makes 0 sense. How embarrassing.

A bit annoyed. Paid extra to see "Switzerland" aka Federer compared to other matches. Might ring Tickatek tomorrow and suss out the refund policy. I've seen the Great Britain players before and without disrespecting them, I wouldn't have paid the premium just to see them play some random low-ranked country.
