Fedal era permanently over or not?

Will we see Fedal back at it ever again?

- Nadal with his injury problems
- Federer with his inevitable and eventual decline

Despite, the one-sided H2H with Nadal winning most of their grand slam encounters, as a tennis fan, we all enjoy what these two players produce against each other.

Will the Murray-Djokovic era rise?

Is it over for the Fedal match-up?

All we know that, it isn't over until it is. Until one of them decides to hang up their racquet or is no longer able to get to the later rounds to meet each other.

Discuss.

FederACE will get to 20 GSes unless he retires immediately. Realistically speaking, there's a strong possibility he'll claim number 18 at The Championships in 2013.

Rafa is always a lock at RG barring retirement or injury at the wrong time.

No, its not over, although - since end 2010/2011 - i would more speak of a Djoker-Nadal era. I think those two will dominate the majors in the next couple of years. The big IF - if Nadal can heal his injury and plays a - for him -less demanding schedule. Federer will be a factor at majors at least the next year, he can take advantage at some stages of the fight between these two.
Who is coming really from behind? Murray? I think, the jury is still out, if he can really make a breakthrough. I wouldn't bet on him against Djoker in a virtual final. Del Potro? Is a charismatic and interesting player, is still young, but looks much older then he really is, and probably has his best days already behind him. Berdych? A sort of eternal talent, is capable for the upset, but lacks nerves and consistency for the big win. Ferrer? A good fighter, but limited. Who does give him a chance to win even a set against Djoker today? And who is going up the rankings. There is a deep hole in the region of upcoming guys of say 20-23 years. Raonic? Tomic? They haven't really shown much progress this year. To the contrary, we saw old guys like Haas make some brief excelling performances.

I wouldn't count them out yet.

I don't really know why all the 'Federer is done' talk is back already. He's had a great season and he's still #1! Sure, he has lost a few steps and is more prone to having a bad day, but when he's on he can still beat anyone. Given a favorable draw he can still win a major, although I agree he'll never be the odds on favourite again.

Nadal is not done either (especially not on clay), he has always come back from injury in strong fashion. Expect him to do so again.

Doubtless Nike are grasping for new strategies in Nadal's well earned absence. Fed is staying out of trouble luckily and on him Nike can count.

Nadal's absence is well earned by Federer. Federer has had to play in a tough era since 2008. Federer deserved a break from the elite.

Yeah, he's had to tame two generations, one over which he was naturally dominant, the other more like a puzzle to solve he never quite contained completely or, as satisfactorily as his own generation. He did good for straddling two generations, he ripped one to pieces and consistently pushed the elite from the other.

I can see Fed getting knocked out early in the French next year. He was very close to being 2 sets down to David Goffin, and I think he knows he has no chance of winning it again. Obviously he'll still try to win every match, but I don't think it'll be a huge deal if he loses early on.

Australian Open: Kudryavtsev, Beck, Karlovic, Tomic, Del Potro, Nadal

French: Kamke, Unqur, Mahut, Goffin, Del Potro, Djokovic

Wimbledon: Ramos, Fognini, Benneteau, Malisse, Youzhny, Djokovic, Murray

It's interesting to note that pre-semis, Del Potro aside, the highest seed in this list is Youzhny at 30, so really the chances of him getting knocked out have been pretty slim. It'll be interesting to see if Fed can continue to reach regular slam semis if he faces the likes of Berdych, Tipsarevic, Cilic and other big hitters capable of smashing anyone off court. Heck even Ferrer is probably now capable of beating Federer on an off day.

Yes there were lots of pieces in that earlier era.

countless threads like this start when fed loses a match. Cut him a break. If he wins he is goat , when loses a single match he's done. get a grip

I know, look at all the odd federer threads at the moment. It's absurd the kind of people who seem to like him. Deranged beyond belief!

Pssh, it's not like these two have won the last 2 majors or anything.

Federer will still hang around for a while, but Fedal matches won't happen as much often IMO. It's a good thing Fed won their last meeting in straights when it was on a slow hardcourt outdoors when wind and after rain, conditions which were supposed to favour Rafa.

Rain favors Nadal? LOL is that a joke? The ball doesn't bounce as high after rain, and that eliminates Nadal's best quality. Couldn't be a worse condition.

Either way IW result won't matter, as Nadal won their last 5 slam meetings lol. Can't get more lopsided than that. But they will definitely meet again at the non-slams, that we can be sure of.

Damp ie slow conditions should favour Nadal imo.

Dismissing him right after Wimbledon? I admit I had dismissed him around mid-2011, but after this year I think he might have more slams in him.

I think we're in an era where Murray and Djokovic will battle primarily for the hardcourt titles, Federer will dominate the fast surfaces, and Nadal will continue to dominate clay. It's already been shaping up that way for the last 12 months, and I really see it continuing for at least the next couple of years.

I agree with all you said.

The only place Federer might "dominate" is indoors. He probably has a chance to win another Wimbledon or U.S Open at some point, but in no way will he dominate either event at this stage. Then again maybe you were thinking the only truly fast surfaces today are indoors.

Yes, and Wimby. That's the only outdoor surface that's still fast enough to come close to the indoor surfaces.
