Fedal will never happen at USO. What if?

The sad realization that this potential matchup at the USO will now probably never take place. So many chances though.

Here's my take on who would have won had they met in the ones that we missed. In the following cases, one of the two was only one win away from a Fedal matchup.

2008: Fed (would have met in F)
2009: Fed (would have met in F)
2010: Nadal (would have met in F)
2011: Fed (would have met in F)
2013: Nadal (would have met in QF)
2017: Nadal (would have met in SF)

Disguss.

And every honest Federer fan should be very happy about that. Other than the 2009 Abdomenadal, very probably we are looking at clean sweep for the Mallorcan Toreador. ;)

It's amazing how they never met there. The only result which was fully expected is Nadal losing to Del Potro in 2009. Given their forms back then he never had a chance. But in other years...

Nadal losing to Murray in 2008 was a surprise.

Federer losing to Djokovic in 2010 from a double matchpoint was surprising.

Djokovic was the favorite in the 2011 semifinal, but come on, Federer had a double matchpoint on serve and suddenly choked hard.

Nobody could expect Federer to lose to Robredo in 2013. He pushed Nadal to the limits in Cincinnati and it looked like he started finding his form, but suddenly he played a terrible match against a player he never lost to before that.

Nobody could expect Federer to lose to Del Potro who should have lost to Thiem in the previous round in 2017.

I'd also add that nobody could expect Federer to lose to Dimitrov in 2019. A shocking result.

That my dear friend is what I call a bait.

2008 would go to Federer. Nadal was dead tired in the SF. And AO court supports him way more against Federer.

2009 definitely is not a right time for Rafael to meet Federer.

2010 Nadal, just too good.

2011 toss up. Most probably Rafae is a bit more of a favorite but Federer well against him in RG and this was Arthur Ashe.

2013 :
RG 2008 :The sequel

2017:
The guy who won the tournament or the guy who played five setter against semi retired Youhzny.

No brainer :Rafael.

Federer was injured in 2017 and Rafael was a walking zombie in 2008.

2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2017: Fedr
2013: the Nadal
I don't think I would say Fed would have won 2010. It would have been an interesting contest, but considering Nadal dominated Djokovic in that final, I'd have to say he would have won that one. 2010 and 2013 were probably his best 2 years, so it's hard to say Fed would have beaten him in 2010.

Your list is pretty similar to what mine would look like. 2011 is a bit of a wild card because while Fed did play the much better match against the tournament champion (Djokovic), Nadal would have had his match-up advantage.

Considering that Rafa was blown right off the courts 2, 2 and 2 by Del Potro, and he clearly wasn't healthy with the abdominal injury, I would say no ****ing way Rafa would have beaten Fed if they had met at the US Open that year.

No way would Fed have beaten Rafa in 2011. I think his choking on MP's in the semis was psychologically to avoid Nadal in the final. And 2017? A healthy Fed would have beaten Nadal in straights, he was 4-0 against him in 2017.

I don't even know if Nadal's SF match was completed by the time the botched MPs happened. I really doubt Nadal was on his mind during these points. This argument never really made sense to me. What would you say about the WB19 choke then? It's similar but there was no Nadal to face after the match.

2017 -> I too think Fed would have beaten Nadal if I look his overall year performance. But had he won against Delpo, he would probably have lost to Nadal due to his bad back. He shouldn't have played Montreal that year. Messed him up for summer.

I'll go a step further

2008: Fed in 4
2009: Fed in straights
2010: Nadal in 4
2011: Nadal in 5
2013: Nadal in 3
2017: Nadal in 4

Alternate reality where both are healthy each time

2008: Nadal in 5
2009: Nadal in 5
2010: Nadal in 4
2011: Nadal in 5
2013: Nadal in 3
2017: Federer in 3 (edit: maybe 4. idk)

Not sure about 2011 pick. Fed would have had a shot but Nadal had a clear edge in match-up at the time and not sure Fed would have had enough in the tank for the final (not physically maybe but mentally/emotionally).

I'd favour Nadal 60-40 in 2011 USO had Fed converted a MP against Nole.

How would you rate Federer best USOs?

It's interesting seeing everybody take such hardline stances on hypothetical matches that mostly would've been close to a toss up.

Something like this:

1)2004
2)2006
3)2005
4)2007
5)2008

But NatF and metsman are better posters to ask that. It's hard for me to rank tourney forms because of so many factors involved.

I do think 2010 USO Nadal would beat any Fed at USO, his (Rafa's) other USO versions aren't nearly as impressive to me as that one.

Think that is how most rate them. Of the rest what 2009 the best?
Rafa has 2 great USOs 2010/2013 and then 3 very good USOs 2011/2017/2019.

Yeah, I'd take 2009 USO after that despite his serving woes in the final. 2010 and 2011 I feel are similar levels and 2015 was the last time Fed was in-form at USO unfortunately.

Generally speaking, 2009 was the last year I felt Fed was a beast from the baseline.

Another fantasy thread where Fed mostly dominates some player... In reality, Fed 0 titles since 2008, Nadal 4 titles...
