Federer 2011 AO

G.O.A.T.
I was watching highlights of the Djokovic AO SF today. Fed was up 5-2 in the second set and then lost 5 straight games and dropped the set 7-5!
Had Fed won the second set I’d say the match probably would have gone 5 sets and maybe he gets a win over the mythological beast of 2011 Djokovic.
How high was Federer’s level in that match overall relative to other years?

Yeah, nobody can see the agenda here.

It's not like someone wants to prove 2021 Djokovic who gets outplayed by Shapovalov, Stefanos, Zverev when the ball is in play is better than the best baseline year of Djokovic.

That too using a straight set match where Djokovic broke the will of a Federer playing well enough

Federer in 2011 was as old as Peter was in 2001, definitely you cannot expect peak level play

2004-2006 Federer would have maybe beaten Djokovic.
King Safin of 2005 would also have beaten Djokovic

That was the moment Fedr started declining. It happened suddenly and after that he could not play Djok on the same level due to an advanced age.

He was old and declined in 2011. Nadal was old and out of prime in 2011 as well. Murray is lesser player than Roddick and Hewitt anyway. Djokovic was winning in a weak era. ;)
Goodness me, we are on the same page! If 2 people share the same opinion it must be true. :)

He was old and exhausted by playing for 3 hrs like djoker was after leading 6-1 3-2 in olympics semi till the end of PCB match

Fed was 29 back then coming into AO fresh and in form as that was his first tournament of the year, and first tournament after he won the 2010 WTF in pretty dominant fashion. OTOH Djokovic a 34 y/o who came in Tokyo on empty tank, having won RG and Wimbledon in the last 4 weeks, spending crazy amount of physical and mental resources in the process. Is not the same really. ;)

How many 5 setters he played in wimbledon.. that was the easiest wimbledon run since Nalbandians Final run in 2002.

You finally get it. Djokovic has won a majority of his slams in the era of Dimitrov Raonic Nishikori

I've always thought his level was incredibly underrated because of the scoreline. That was a really high quality match in terms of shot making. Djoker was just too strong that day. Better mental strength from Fed to snag one or two of those sets would have only delayed the inevitable though. Mentally He couldn't finish the job in 5 against worse versions at the USO where conditions suited Federer more than RLA, so it's definitely not happening here if it got that far.

Slightly declined Fed never had a shot against the peakiest of peak Novak on his best court.

He wasn't beating that Djokovic, on that surface. When Novak is at his very best at the AO, he is better than anyone :D

The match was very close despite the lopsided sets. 2008 AO a little similar. Fed had a 5-3 lead in first set and was like two points away from set and Nole stormed back and took four straight games.

So 2007 USO was even closer, right? Mostly decided by Djoko's inexperience...

That was fed still at his physical peak… he just won basel and YEC in dominant fashion and barely dropped sets before facing Djokovic. Then the rude awakening happened o_O

Like 7/10 from fed. Around the level of Gonzo of AO 07 final.
BH was leaking errors like crazy.
Good match overall from him by general player standards, but a little below par by prime standards.
Junkballing was working in the 2nd set. Went up 5-2. But he went back to ballbashing and lost it.

What would you give Djokovic 9.5/10?
