... and when he lost Halle the nonsense that was spoken about his chances at Wimby now give rise to a bigger chuckle.

3/3 in majors so far:) need that US Open

Aye...part of me like...this may be his last year to do it.

Strike while the iron is hot..something tells me that it may be another
Murray/Fed USO final.......

Sorry Andy...but Fed will break yer heart again.

I can honestly see Fed retiring after next year.

SO Vintage Federer can only win one slam because of a roof a year

I know, it's a joke to put his success down to a roof. All that success - 8 tournaments since the US Open - and of those 8 finals, only 1 and 3 quarter sets were played under a roof.

Roger getting younger, restarted from 2005?

2006-2013 he will win 3 majors?

There are some big differences between 2005 and 2012. In 2005 Roger was undisputed No. 1, the top player in the world whose losses were few and very surprising. In 2012 he was No.3 player for long time before jumping to No.1

In 2005 AO, he lost in semis but it was a tight 5 setter where he was at match point. In 2012 AO, he was always behind behind Rafa.

In 2005 he could win Miami whereas he was finished in Miami 2012.

In 2012 clay court season, he was walloped by Novak in Rome and French Open. Whereas in 2005 FO, against Rafa also clearly he was the player with better shots and was leading by a break in 4th set. But then too much unforced errors skewed his chances.

Shocking loss at Halle at 2012. At 2012 wimbledon he struggled hard against Benetau before finally finding his rythm. at 2005 wimby he was in god mode, demolishing Roddick and Hewitt like they were second rate players.

And then straight set losses to Murray at Olympics

And finally his record going to US Open 2005 was 61-3. In 2012 he already had 7 losses, he's at 56-7

I wasn't talking about the specifics of the matches or early round scores, just that the end results are similar so far. He also had a shocking loss to Gasquet in 2005. It happens.

Just a fan getting excited by his revival that's all. :)

I mean Federer's remaining 2005 season... This sounds a lot like Nadal's

Kiddin'.. But seriously, did he get an ankle injury in 2005 post-USO ??

Yes, in 2005 post USO he played in Thailand (d. a young Murray in the final), but after that he returned to Europe and sprained his ankle during practice. Was on crutches for a while and missed the rest of the indoor season before coming back for TMC tho' he wasn't yet fully fit. Managed to make the final but his legs ran out of juice against Nalby in that best-of-five match.

I agree...

He lost to Murray at the Olympics and everyone is like: Murray is the form player... despite watching Federer not only win Cincinatti, but do so without losing serve... while he lost to a qualifier in the 2nd round.

Form can change as quickly as the weather in tennis. Long term class is more indicative of likely future results than a great match here and there.

Between start of the season and Cincy, in terms of finals and titles, 2012 definitely ranks among his best seasons. It's in 2006 he made most finals: 11 (but he lost 4 of them) and in 2005 9 finals. 2012/2007 and 2004 come 3rd with 8 finals. What make 2004 and 2005 superior imo is that in 2004 and 2005, Fed won all finals he played in that period, didn't lose a single one. (8 in 2004, 9 in 2005). In terms of titles won, 2012 comes as 4th best stretch: 9 titles in 2005. 8 titles in 2004, 7 titles in 2006 and 6 titles in 2012, that would put 2012 slightly above 2007 when he won only 5 titles in the same period (but of course 2 of those were slams). So I would say 2012 is actually closest to 2007 in terms of winning %. Fed's worst during that period are 2000, 2001 and 2011 in that order (1/2/3 finals and 0 or 1 title) followed by 2002 and 2010: 4/5 finals and 2 titles. Quite the ressuscitation for Fed in 2012. Did he start gluten free diet too?

Nice analysis. And where does 2008 stand amongst all the other years?

Where are you getting your numbers from? In 2006, Fed won 12 titles, in 2005 he won 11. Are you counting only Masters and Slams?

(answering underground) 2008 is close to 2010: 1 more final (6) but same # of titles: 2. The years when Fed won less than 3 titles by Cincy are: 2000: 0, 2001 and 2011: 1, 2002/2008/2010: 2. The next one would be 2009 with 4. All other years he won 5 or more, that is 2003 to 2007 + 2012.

I'm counting only until Cincy (so 1st part of the year) since that's where we're at this season and I can't compare with what hasn't happened yet... I thought my post made that clear: "from start of season to Cincy".

There's some quote from Lleyton Hewitt, I think, right before the 2005 U.S. Open along the lines of: "He's only lost three matches this season and in two of those he had match point." Far cry from Federer's performance this year, even if he is currently No. 1.

Loosing the halle is the best thing that happened to FED. With critics and everyone writing him off and is over, the whole pressure is off and you can play easily and so he did and took the trophy. So thats a good thing. People were just overdramatic. Some part of me wished for federer to play winston salem and get out of there in the first round ;) that would dazzle critics and he can glide all over in US Open :)
