In my opinion 2015 was his best slamless season. Masters in Cincinatti where he beat peak Djokovic. Wimby and USO Runner up.
Atp Finals runner up.
He and arguably Wawrinka (slams) were the only challenge for peak Djokovic
In your opinion How good was Federer in 2015

Who played at a higher level?

1. Federer Wim 15 SF or Murray Shanghai 10 final
2. Federer Wim 04 QF or Nadal Wim 08 QF
3. Federer YEC 10 SF or Nadal MC 12 final
4. Roddick Wim 03 SF or Del Potro USO 09 final
5. Djokovic Oly 12 SF or Djokovic Wim 21 final
6. Becker YEC 96 final or Djokovic AO 12 final
7. Federer AO 09 4R or Federer USO 09 final

Nah, 2011 > 2015 every day and twice on Sunday in terms of best non-slam season.
I do not know. In 2011 he choked against Djokovic in New York city, and he would have lost to Rafa anyways who also was on fire but Fu....vic ascended to heavens that year. And I am a massive RFs fan.
On the other hand he beat peak Djokovic in 2011, demolished Rafa in London 63 60 and won Atp Finals.
Still I ll go with 2015

The fact that Fed nearly beat Djokovic twice in slams in 2011 seals it for me. He was never close in 2015.

The fact that he was able to reach 2 slam finals in 2015 is due to the weaker field.

Nah, 2011 > 2015 every day and twice on Sunday in terms of best non-slam season.
2011? It was actually a horrible season by his standards. Only the indoor season was great, but apart from that he only won one tournament, Doha in January. He also reached just one Slam final.

The only real highlight of the whole outdoor season was ending Djokovic's winning streak, but we shouldn't forget that he lost the 4 other matches against him. And Wimbledon had the Tsonga loss after leading 2-0.

In 2015 he had more success in tournament wins, reached more Slam finals and played better overall against a Djokovic who was just as "peak" as in 2011, if not more. Only the Seppi loss was really bad.

Worse than a peak Murray/Safin/Roddick/Hewitt?

Yes, surely. I actually think the long pre-match rain delay was an important factor, I remember worrying about Federer being affected by that (more than Djokovic due to being older = physically inferior, and mentally shakier) while waiting for the final to start.

Yeah but Tsonga was a great player when he reached his peak. 2015 was definitely the best non slam season for RF. He would have achieved more had not Djokovic ascended to heavens

Hewitt USO 01 F/Safin USO 00F/Murray USO 12 F/Roddick USO 03 F to take it in 5. Heck maybe Safin in 4?

You're so silly. (results-based analysis lolol)

Best serving season of his career  Both incredibly overrated by Djokovic fans saying he was peaking, and actually underrated by Federer fans who act like he's a crippled mug who can't play at all.

Overall still a clear level below '11 and '12, which were a small level below '09, which was a clear level below '04-06...

It was worse compared to his prime years, but still a better year than 2015. He only reached one slam final because he kept drawing Djokovic in the semis. Since both Djokodal were in their primes/peaks that year, Fed was pretty much forced to always face both of them in slam draws. But in 2015 Nadal was Finnish and that gave Fed more openings to reach slam finals. Murray and Wawrinka were never big problems for him.

The only real highlight of the whole outdoor season was ending Djokovic's winning streak, but we shouldn't forget that he lost the 4 other matches against him. And Wimbledon had the Tsonga loss after leading 2-0.
But he won a big one against Djokovic and nearly won a second, which he never came close in 2015.

In 2015 he had more success in tournament wins
But he won more big titles in 2011.

reached more Slam finals
Because of Nadal's decline.
and played better overall against a Djokovic who was just as "peak" as in 2011, if not more.
There is very strong evidence that he didn't play better overall against a peak Djokovic in 2015.

Only the Seppi loss was really bad.
Which was a pretty big loss.

Hewitt USO 01 F/Safin USO 00F/Murray USO 12 F/Roddick USO 03 F to take it in 5. Heck maybe Safin in 4?

Safin in 4, he was monstrous. The rest probably in 4/5. Federer had a real problem with consistency out there, peak Hewitt/Murray would outrally him eventually. Roddick was basically equal to his 2004 Wimbledon level which troubled peak Fred, high octane botting + big cuts on both wings (yes BH included although less precisely) conquer old Fred here.

2011 Fed:
  • Had a 92 % win % vs the field (I.e. non-Djokodal), which was his highest since 2006, and superior to 2011 (Prime) Nadal’s results (90.4%). This is even more impressive considering the field was stronger in 2011 than 2006/7 etc
  • Produced some of his best clay tennis ever to knock out Peakovic and take it to Nadal at RG
  • Lost earlier at Wimbledon, sure, but got knocked in a freak match where he won 10 more points than Tsonga and went 54-27 on winners-UFEs
  • Had MPs against “best HC player of all time” Peaky Peak Djokovic at the US Open, despite being at the end of/past his own prime (Djokovic is super lucky that they didn’t meet at Wimbledon…)
  • Demolished the field in the indoor season

7 times out of 10 for the rest and 8 times out of 10 for Safin?

2011 fed at AO >> 2015 fed at AO
2011 fed at RG >> 2015 fed at RG
2011 fed at Wim > 2015 fed at WIm (marginally, at worst equal)
2011 fed at USO > 2015 fed at USO

2011 fed at YEC > 2015 fed at YEC.

He beat Djoko in RG 11 and came so close in USO 11.
nothing like that in Wim 15 or USO 15
And djoko was better in USO 11 than in USO 15

Fed never got chance to face off vs Djoko in Cincy and YEC in 11.
I'll grant you Dubai 15 was better than Dubai 11 from fed, though reverse was true for Djoko.

And of course field was considerably stronger in 11 than in 15.

The question is how good was Djokovic at the US Open in 2011. Because we know that he absolutely dominated the season until then, but was really bad post-USO. So was he still that great at the US Open or was it already part of his late season decline that he barely won there? I think in 2015 Djokovic was better in the late hardcourt season and Federer still beat him in Cincinnati (while the US Open match was closer as the result may suggest).

When I remember how it was watching Federer in 2011, then I felt as if he had slightly lost motivation back then. Maybe he thought his Slam record was safe ot whatever. It was the first time since many years that it wasn't really fun to watch him play in some matches. In 2015 he seemed to have much more fire.

Do you think 2015 Fed would best 2011 Djok at Wim or USO? Say 1 of the 2.

2011 USO was clearly Djoko's best USO there.
15 Djoko was struggling in both Canada and Cincy.

the only tournaments in which fed was better in 15 was Dubai, Rome, Cincy.
Everything else 11 was equal or better. (including all 4 slams, YEC)

2011 fed at AO >> 2015 fed at AO

AO: I obviously agree
RG: I obviously agree
WIM: No way the Federer who destroyed Murray and reached the final is worse than the Federer who lost to Tsonga in the QF and didn't have a great win in that tournament
USO: Federer reached the final without losing a set in 2015 and actually played a good match against a great Djokovic. Unfortunately he constantly choked away his chances there, while in 2011 he "only" choked at match point.

And outside the Slams 2015 was slightly better in tournament results (despite winning the WTF in 2011), and considerably better in beating the Big 3 or Big 4.

AO - 11 Fed
RG - 11 Fed
Wim - slight edge to 15 Fed
USO - slight edge to 11 Fed
YEC - even

Just waffling my opinion. Means nothing really.

The problem with Federer hypotheticals is the mental factor. Just on playing level of let's say Cincinnati 2015 he could definitely get into a winning position, but unfortunately as we all know he tends to choke.

Honestly, after Cincinnati and after reaching the final without losing a set I thought he would beat Djokovic at the 2015 US Open, but then again he throw all his chances way.

I would say the main reason for Federer's 2011 RG win was that for once there was extremely more pressure on Djokovic because of the streak. US Open last year showed what can happen when Djokovic has to face more than just normal Slam winning pressure. I remember when watching the RG 2011 SF I had a very early feeling that this time Djokovic would struggle.

But if you don’t think 2015 Fed beats 2011 Djokovic in one of the two might not make sense to call him better? Unless you think his 2015 game is better for most the rest of the field.

WIM: No way the Federer who destroyed Murray and reached the final is worse than the Federer who lost to Tsonga in the QF and didn't have a great win in that tournament

but the one who turned up in the final vs Djoko is significantly weaker than Wim 11 QF. he couldn't sustain level for like more than 2 hours or so.
The Tsonga match, he won 10 more points, 5% more return points. Tsonga just clustered his return points better, while fed did a bad job at it.
Murray of course doesn't have tsonga's serve or aggression.
11 fed had better movement and better fh.

USO: Federer reached the final without losing a set in 2015 and actually played a good match against a great Djokovic. Unfortunately he constantly choked away his chances there, while in 2011 he "only" choked at match point.

and? Both fed and djoko were a level above in the USO 11 semi compared to the USO 15 final.
fed lost one set to Cilic in USO 2011 3rd round before the semi. nothing much there. He absolutely crushed Monaco in 4R. Got back at Tsonga in straights in the QF.

And outside the Slams 2015 was slightly better in tournament results (despite winning the WTF in 2011), and considerably better in beating the Big 3 or Big 4.

only because nadal/djoko stopping him in semis in 11. actual level wise in the tournaments in which he played in both in 11 and 15.

doha 11 > brisbane 15 - by a bit
dubai 11 << dubai 15 - beat Djoko here in 15 being really clutch. pre-final was similar in both. final significantly better in 15.
IW 11 > ~ IW 15 - not much difference pre-djoko matches, took the set vs djoko more comfortably in 11. slight edge to 11, I'd say. again, just because he met djoko in semi in 11 doesn't mean he was worse there.
Monte carlo 11/15 - both below par losses to melzer and monfils respectively. who cares to separate too much
Madrid 11 >> Madrid 15 - lost to Nadal in semi in 3 in 11, was a good match. lost to Kyrgios in 3 in 15 in first match
Rome 11 << Rome 15 - lost to gasquet in 11, made the final in 15 incl beating Stan
Cincy 11 << Cincy 15 - lost to bird in 11. 15 - CIncy was his best tournament

Basel 11 >> Basel 15 - was pretty inconsistent in Basel 15, though raised his level for final. was dominant in 11
Paris 11 >> Paris 15 - lost to Isner in 15. Paris 11 was fed's best tourney in M1000 in 11. great performances.
YEC 11 >> YEC 15 - the RR match vs Nadal was the best among all of these. wawa semi in 15 was pretty good, but the final massive letdown.

Two masters tournaments each with significant differences (Madrid 11 and Paris 11) and (Rome 15, Cincy 15).
YEC 11 significantly better than YEC 15
Dubai and Basel in opposite directions for 15 and 11 respectively

He didn't play Halle in 11 because of reaching RG final. won Halle in 15.

what big 3 or big 4?

1. nadal was nearly AWOL in 15.
Anyways fed 15 has zero chance of beating nadal at Miami 11. maybe he wins 1 or 2 games more that's about it.
fed 15 loses in straights to nadal of Madrid 11.
fed 15 also loses easily in straights to nadal of RG 11 instead of a pretty competitive final
fed crushed nadal in YEC 11, while basel 15 was a 3-setter.
so what's the point there again?

2. Djokovic: fed beat him in a slam in 11 and nearly again at USO
fed 15 went only 4 sets in both in 15.
Dubai 15 was clearly better from fed vs djoko, I'll give you that.
CIncy 15 was obviously better.
YEC 11 fed would've beaten 15 djoko in RR the same and the final would be a massive fight unlike 15 YEC final.

two slam matches+YEC go to 11 while Dubai, Cincy go to 15.
clearly goes to the former

3. fed did great vs Murray in 15, but they never faced off in 11 for a comparision.

Does Fed Wim 11 get to 5 sets with Wim 15 Djokovic?

Oh yeah, that's another thing about 2015, he nearly made (an albeit resurgent) ****dal look good on his home turf in Basel. The backhand trauma was still there so even though he had tried to start hitting through it, it was loose and made lots of UEs. But Fed 11 would have bagelled that Nadal.

Must the reason always be mental, lol. Maybe he was just a bit inconsistent due to age, duh. He did lose sets to Kohli and Goffin en route. Nadal lost a set in three consecutive matches too (albeit all against peaky bashers he often struggles with, not softies), so a messy match could be expected.

1. Fed RG 07 by a little
2. Roddick Wim 04. Djokovic was down 2 sets to love vs Seppi and had to save 4 MPs vs tsonga. Come on.
3. Hewitt USO 01 by a little.
4. Fed USO 15. But potential wise, Roddick Wim 03 could be a tougher opponent.
5. Nadal Wim 11 by a little (difference comes down due to final)
6. This one is actually interesting. Djokovic hit higher highs in Wim 14, but fed didn't have his lows vs Cilic/Dimi before final v Nadal.
marginally Djoko thanks to the final.
