Congratulations to Federer on becoming the first player in history to win at least six titles at five different tournaments. Not only that, he achieved it by winning at all all five different event categories - Grand Slam, ATP World Tour Finals, ATP World Tour Masters 1000, ATP World Tour 500 series, ATP World Tour 250 series.

Grand Slam - Wimbledon - 7
ATP World Tour Finals - 6
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 - Cincinnati - 6
ATP World Tour 500 Series - Dubai - 6
ATP World Tour 250 Series - Halle - 7

I think this achievement will stand for all of our lifetimes.

That is impressive. And in a few weeks, he has chance to make it six titles at six different events.

But at the same time Nadal is the only player to win at least 8 titles at 2 different events. This will also stand the test of time ;)

This sounds great. Aside from US Open and Basel, what other tournaments has he won at least 5 times?

Nadal's 9 FO's and 7-8 MC and Rome titles are more impressive IMO. Dubai and Halle don't count for much IMO.

Yea dominating two clay tournaments in the weakest clay field ever is more impressive than Feds record

Wouldn't the Hamburg-Madrid Masters count as six?

Yes, two different events. But, one replaced the other.

I think it's apples and pears. Nice achievement but won't deserve a stand-alone slot in a list of Fed's achievements, imo.

Halle and Dubai don't even have masters level fields even if they're usually better than bog standard 250's and 500's.

Hamburg/Madrid would definitely count, giving him clay to go with grass (Wimbledon and Halle) and outdoor hard (Cincy and Dubai). His YECs were split 2 and 4 on outdoor and indoor hard. But another win in Basel would complete the set of 6 tournament wins on each surface. Obviously another US Open to get 6 titles at 2 different Majors would be the biggest.

I would prefer Dubai a thousand times over Barcelona in terms of playing field. Fed's last 2 Dubai titles have been more impressive than most of Rafa's Barcelona titles

Yeah by far. Dubai has had masters level fields almost before - Barcelona, not so much.

It is pretty surprising actually that Fed's best Masters Series event (joint most titles with Cincy, most finals, highest win percentage) is on clay.

Why not? It's the same clay masters with pretty much similar conditions. High altitude and all.

It's in the same position but I don't think the conditions are that similar?

Madrid is faster due to the altitude while Hamburg was slow with a low bounce IIRC.

Not fair to not count it as one. Would you not count Fed's Madrid title as the October masters, which is Shanghai at the moment?

Yep. And Federer can't really get penalized for it changing from one city to the next. Who is to say that moving it to Madrid didn't diminish his chances, since his record in Hamburg was outstanding to begin with?

It's like AO moving from Kooyong to Melbourne, or US Open from Forrest Hills to Flushing Meadows. It is essentially the same event, just moved to another venue.

I mean, Federer has SIX WTF on three different continents, yet we count them as one.

Russel, did you have to actually do it?

Well it took more posts than I thought it would, at least.

No, same city but totally different events. Rogi's blue clay mastery belongs with Hamburg achievements, just as you would not add a 500 title in Hamburg in July to his MS1000 titles there in May.
