Federer Abandoning His Beautiful Tennis

I'm a big Fed fan but I did find his words following his win at Estoril today a bit odd (see below for an article with quotes from Fed). He almost seems to imply that he generally plays not necessarily to win, but to look good playing. Granted during his prime he was able to win matches and looking better than anyone else in history while doing it but this implication (that up until now, grace and beauty in his form outweighed the desire to win) is a bit vexing to me. I am probably reading too much into it and my guess is that he's just saying this as an excuse for why he's been losing and hence now he needs to win ugly. But it's pretty dumb excuse in my opinion. Fed, in your old age have you lost your mind?!

(Reuters) - World number one Roger Federer said he had to get tough and forget about the beautiful side of his game to beat Germany's Bjorn Phau 6-3 6-4 at the Estoril Open and post his first win of the clay season Wednesday.

Sports

The Swiss made the worst possible start to the season, crashing out at the first hurdle in Rome against Latvian Ernests Gublis last month, so he was happy to beat the 138th-ranked German, even if he had to opt for a pragmatic approach.

"Today I played to win, I didn't try to make it look nice or anything, it was about being tough and focused, and coming through, trying to win matches," Federer told a news conference.

"I played well and its important that I play the right tennis right now. It wasn't always beautiful, but it doesn't matter," he added.

Federer, who won the tournament in 2008, appeared to be in control of the match but did have to save three break points as he served for the first set.

After receiving a bye in the first round, the win against Phau earned Federer a quarter-final berth against Frenchman Arnaud Clement Friday.

"He's a guy who's beaten big players in the past, he's tough and he's not going make it easy for me," the Swiss said.

Looking ahead to the French Open, which starts at Roland Garros on May 23, Federer said winning the tournament for the first time last year would give him an "edge" this time.

"I'll be one of the big favorites to again. As defending champion you have something special going for you. It doesn't make things a whole lot easier, but at least now you know how to do it and I think that's going to give me an edge," he said.

"Last year I came through some really tough matches and that's what the French Open is all about, digging deep and battling when things are not going well and accepting the physical and mental battle," Federer added.

Fourth-seed Albert Montanes also booked a quarter-final spot Wednesday, beating Spanish compatriot Daniel Gimeno Traver 6-1 6-2. Eighth seed Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas battled to beat Spain's Marcel Granollers 7-6 7-6.

Second seeded Croat Ivan Ljubicic has pulled out due to a muscle injury which prevents him from serving, a spokesman for the tournament said.

Well, Fed, at this point of his career, will smetimes need to win ugly rather than play his beautiful tennis and lose.

Fed does try to be a showman sometimes. He tries to entertain the crowds especially during the the early rounds.I'm guessing he meant that today he tried to do none of that.Just single-minded focus on getting a match in.And not surprising seeing that he needs it.

most top pros dont agree to the real issue .. it is no secret..

making that statement i think is a good step .. tennis wise that is.. i read it like.. 'ya i gotta work on it to win'

:)

To be clear I think that fact that he seems to be focusing on winning and not showmanship is definitely the right step. Let's hope he wins this tourney and goes into Madrid much sharper than he was at Rome.

Beautiful, Ugly, whatever, it's just good to see him win a match.

Clement has a 3 - 6 H2H against Federer, but it should be another routine win for Fed.

Actually I think Wang is not too far away from the "truth"; I remember Federer was quoted before at Wimbledon (2003? 2004?) that he liked to look at himself on the big TV screen and see replays of his great shots. I think Federer wants to "have his cake and eat it", play beautiful tennis and win, but sometimes in tennis you can't afford to do that. He probably realises that he has to work really hard and play "ugly" if he has to in order to win. Hope he'll have better results soon.

In the past Federer said that he tries to put on a good show in every match because he knows that there are people and their children in the stands that have paid good money to watch him, and may not get the chance to watch him again, so he tries to make it as special for them as he can. Maybe now he doesn't care about giving the spectators a religious experience, but instead will just do what it takes to win

Winning ugly > losing pretty. But he doesn't lose pretty. So winning ugly > losing ugly.

I think he's just acknowledging that he didn't exactly put on a master class or bring the Federer Express into town, but doesn't really care because he's just happy to have won a match comfortably (as he should be, given the past few tourneys!).

Watson: I agree completely.

How about playing ugly, winning ugly, losing ugly, quitting ugly, skipping ugly? You know who I’m talking about.

As long as he doesn't become a cheater like someone from Spain, it's ok!! You can't always play beautiful.

Why are so many people acting like the OP properly interpreted Federer's statements? Clearly he was just saying he didn't play all that well but he still won.

There is absolutely NOTHING in those statements that even remotely implies that he has had more concern for looking good than winning in the past.

It's always been a balancing act for him.
During his prime, he did say that when he first came on tour, he tried to impress the crowds by hitting the most difficult shots; problem was too many errors. He then decided he didn't want to play out his career as some kind of boutique player that the afficionados came to watch on outer courts, and that he would get "even more attention" if he could play on center. To do so, he disciplined himself to play a more conservative game.

I was a bit surprised by these interview comments as well. I didn't see this match, except highlights, but I saw the recent defeats and thought while watching some of them that Roger was a bit overambitious w/ his shot selection, and was shooting himself in the foot w/ errors instead of making sure to keep the ball in play. Maybe he realized that as well. I see he made lots of errors in this match too, but at least on the big points, like down 0-40, he let the other guy screw up this time :)

Better to win ugly than lose ugly as he's been doing lately.

If Roger could win while playing exquisite scintillating tennis, I think it's unquestionable that he would in a heart beat. The majestic flare that had become synonymous with his game is with distinguished with at a creative and artistic genius. Roger has an adundance of talent, and at times almost an incalculable variety of ways to hit shots from almost virtually every inch of the court.

It's what makes his game fluid, ballet like. The court is his canvas, and if he could, he'd want to create a masterpiece each time.

In reality, as stubborn as he might be to carry out this task, he knows the magic cannot always be there. He also knows that at times you just have to get on with the task presented to you. He hasn't been playing his best since the AO, where he produced some of his most jaw dropping performances. As a perfectionist, it would be frustrating not be able to do that time and time again, but that is the nature of the beast.

Sometimes winning ugly is the best way. It might not aesthetically pleasing to the fans, but it gets him through to the next round, where he might have all his weapons clicking once more.

Prime example is AO. Not to pretty at the start of the event, but firing on all cylinders by the end.

At this point where he hasn't done well in recent tournaments, he is now singleminded in just getting a win, whether it be pretty or ugly.

You'd feel the same if you've lost a succession of matches. All you'd want too is to get a win, even if you have to eek it out some way.

On an aside, I really place Brad Gilbert's book Winning Ugly on the top of my must read tennis books. Even Agassi learned that you don't have to play your best. You just have to play better than your opponent.

STop trolling. How do you figure this person that is nameless but we all know who you are referring to is a cheater?
Besides Federer never played beautiful.

I agree.

I think people are interpreting it the wrong way and all Federer meant was it wasn't the prettiest win, but he got it done.
