Federer and Ferrer have played 16 Times, but never at a Grand Slam.
I assume this is the most matches in a rivalry with no match played at a Grand Slam?
Any other rivalries more than 10 matches with no matches at a Grand Slam that come to mind?

Times that Federer and Ferrer were one match away from playing at a Grand Slam

2005 French Open - Ferrer lost in Quarterfinals to Nadal
2007 US Open - Ferrer lost to Djokovic in Semifinals to Djokovic
2008 Australian Open - Ferrer lost in Quarterfinals to Djokovic
2008 French Open - Ferrer lost in Quarterfinals to Monfils
2011 French Open - Ferrer lost in 4th Round to Monfils
2011 Wimbledon - Ferrer lost in 4th Round to Tsonga
2013 French Open - Federer lost in Quarterfinals to Tsonga

They did play a 5-setter in 2007 Master Cup and Federer beat him, so any 5-setter at the slam wouldn't matter either.
Nadal lost to Ferrer 6 times, including 2 at the slams.
Nole also suffered 5 losses against Ferrer.

I remembered Brad Gilbert and Stefan Edberg playing a bunch outside of Majors. Turns out they played 19 times, with Edberg winning 16, but they actually did play a third round match at the 1985 U.S. Open, so that matchup wouldn't qualify.

And you want to know WHY you're viewed as a dbag troll?

A "Master Cup" is not a grand slam and therefore had nothing to do with the thread question.

Nadal and Nole had nothing to do with the thread question (it was about Ferrer).

Fanboy. Troll. You.

It's a 5 set format old man.

I understand you were not raised and educated in an English-speaking country. However, "Grand Slam" was the queston.

nice try though old boy

I'd have liked to meet them at RG '13 because of:
1) Ferrer's best surface is clay
2) Federer was below par that year and enjoys a big matchup advantage over Ferrer

Unfortunately Tsonga was too "Stronga" in the QF. In that potential SF I'd have given 50/50 for both ;)

Given that Ferrer has coincidentally lost 16 times to Federer I'm guessing the outcome would probably not have been any different even if they had met at a Grand Slam.

Ferrer 2013 French Open would have a hugh shot against Federer worst full year on tour since 2002.

So it was mostly Ferrer's fault for never meeting in a slam (2013 FO was Roger's fault).

The losses to Monfils were a bit inexcusable. Those are the matches Ferrer should have won, on his favorite surface.

The way things currently are, I doubt they will ever meet in a GS :(

But if they are to meet, it will probably be in an early round as Ferrer's ranking in quite low.

I don't think this page is quite up to date/complete, but all of the rivalries on here with 16+ matches feature at least one GS encounter;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tennis_rivalries#Open_Era

Yes, that's incomplete. For instance, Chang/Courier was a great rivalry not on this list, with 24 matches and each player winning 12. But this rivalry is a near miss as well, with 1 Major matchup, with Courier beating Chang at the 1995 U.S. Open.

Is there an accurate list anywhere? I suspect Federer-Ferrer is the record holder in this area (in the Open Era), but can't prove it.

Not as far as I know. Federer/Ferrer seems tough to beat, but some of these H2Hs with more matches and just 1 match at a Major, like Edberg/Gilbert and Courier/Chang, makes me think that it might not be a record.

They played the final at the 2007 Masters Cup but Federer won in straights. They met 3 other times at the WTF, 3 years on the trot (2010,2011 & 2012) but each time Federer won in straights.
