It is worth noting that at 31, Federer has advanced further in the French Open then Sampras did at the French Open from ages 25-30.

Also worth noting that at 30, Federer won the same number of matches in one French Open (2012) than Sampras did in his last six French Open appearances.

The average ranking of Sampras' defeats in his last six French Open appearances was 72. The average ranking of Federer's defeats in his last six French Open appearances was 2.5.

Mustard, thanks for posting.

In summary, Federer has won more matches at the French Open in his last five tournament appearances (after his prime) than Sampras did in his entire career (13 tournament appearances).

It is worth noting .... Fed... then Sampras did...

Also worth noting ..... Federer won ... than Sampras did

Interesting that Sampras never even made a final. Thanks for posting that

Nice list, but is anyone seriously trying to make a case for Sampras being remotely in the same league as Federer on clay? Roger's probably one of the 10 best all-time clay players, but just happens to live in the shadow of THE all-time great clay player. Pete is a solid journeyman clay player who once got into the SF of FO.

if not for the Super Clay Goat Nadal, Fed would have 5 Fo

Sampras is lucky to make it past the 1st round look at all the bagels and bread sticks smh

I've got news for you. If Federer had to play any of the Top-15 clay players ever, he'd be 50% or less chance to win against them. Federer is good, but the clay field he had to face during his prime (outside of Nadal) is really bad.

pretty interesting that Fed donked out of the french in round freakin' 1 right before taking Wimbledon.. and only got to round 3 in 2004 also when he was clearly the #1 player and already GOATING.

It just really took him some time to mature on this surface.

And while I don't think it's realistic for him to win this tournament.. given the cake draw another Final is very possible and that would be a 6th final! more than the AO, and equal to his USO run.

Pretty incredible if it happens... and odds are it will.

Federer is good, but the clay field he had to face during his prime (outside of Nadal) is really bad.

Got it. That explains how someone like Nadal managed to win all those FOs and tons of clay tournaments for 8-9 years with supposedly broken knees.
Weak clay era is weak.

...and the point of this thread is..?

Next, compare Federer and Borg's performances at the FO, or Federer and Nadal, or Courier, or....

Its worthy to note that, In Sampras' time, seeds hardly made it deep into the toruni, meaning lot of clay-court specialists ruled. Not any more. So its Apples to Oranges.

There was also much more disparity in surfaces back then. Hard, played faster and so did grass, not everything is slower, so it was more of an investment to excel in clay.

I think he only won one M1000 on clay.

I don't really have a dog in this fight, so feel free to edit my statement to top 15 or top 20 clay players of all time. Whatever the case, Pete is not remotely comparable to Fed on clay and this thread is like comparing the history of the New York Yankees to that of the Seattle Mariners. It's a bit unnecessary.

So you think RFederer would have beaten MPuerta (2005), NDjokovic(2006-2008, 2011)?

It's hard to say with all these hypotheticals. In 2006-2008 at RG I might just give Federer the edge over Djokovic, given that Federer didn't lose at RG for 4 straight years to anyone other than Nadal.

But 2011? Tough to see Federer pulling that one off. Djokovic was having a great year that year - I believe he was like 41-0 by the latter stages of the 2011 French open, AND he had already beaten Nadal twice on clay in that VERY clay season, winning by 4 sets to love. And Federer was just an over-the-hill, 29 year old has-been.

No way he was good enough to have beaten Djokovic in his superman season on clay. I mean, if he could have beaten Djokovic on clay in 2011, and that also over 5 sets at the French what would that imply for when he actually in his peak. Phew. That would be kinda embarrassing no?

What do you think 616360?

It doesn't take a lot of courage to argue that Federer is a much greater clay court player than Sampras. Sampras disliked the surface intensely, Federer is one of the all-time great clay court players. Federer is in the class of players like Nadal, Borg, Lendl, Rosewall, Vilas, a few others.

Yes, Federer could have achieved all time great results on clay if he did not
play in this era against Nadal, IMHO.

In fact, if he played any time before 2000s, he would have achieved much
more on clay than on the fast slippery grass courts or lightening fast hard courts
in the past.

He is very unlucky on clay but lucky on grass and hard courts in this era.

So you think RFederer would have beaten MPuerta (2005), NDjokovic(2006-2008, 2011)?

Puerta would never have been allowed to keep the title had he won the final anyway. He tested positive for a cardiac stimulant after the final. He had his post-French Open results in 2005 annulled entirely, and I believe it was only for reasons of convenience and to avoid a lot of fallout scandals that Puerta's 2005 French Open run to the final wasn't annulled too.

haha xD

I can't see Federer losing to any of those guys except MAYBE Djokovic in 2008, due to Djokovic being in better form the whole tournament till running into Nadal. but even then.. Federer would have gotten up for that match much more so since at that point in time he was not out of his prime nor was Djokovic able to consistently beat him.

Honestly, what's the point of this thread? Seriously, everyone and their brother knows Fed is better than Sampras on clay.

Got it. That explains how someone like Nadal managed to win all those FOs and tons of clay tournaments for 8-9 years with supposedly broken knees.
Weak clay era is weak.

You're picking the wrong fight with me. Because I'll be the first to admit that Nadal's extreme success on clay has been because of weak clay competition. The only thing worse is weak grass competition. I'm fairly confident that Borg and Nadal (and maybe one more) would split success on clay if they had to play each other during the same era.

No arguments from me. The clay field in this era has been so weak that even "upsets" are nearly non-existent.

So you think RFederer would have beaten MPuerta (2005), NDjokovic(2006-2008, 2011)?

He would certainly have beaten Djokovic in 2006,2007 and maybe 2008. Also, he DID beat Djokovic in 2011 and would have faced Murray in the final. He would have won that too. IDK about 2005.
