Federer set a new record by winning 7 titles on 5 different tournaments.

1. Wimbledon(2003, 04, 05, 06, 07, 09, 12)
2. Cincinnati(2005, 07, 09, 10, 12, 14, 15)
3. Dubai(2003, 04, 05, 07, 12, 14, 15)
4. Halle(2003, 04, 05, 06, 08, 13, 14, 15)
5. Basel(2006, 07, 08, 10, 11, 14, 15)

With a victory in Basel, Federer is the first player to reach 10 straight finals at a tournament(12 overall).

Even more impressive when you consider Fed didn't play Basel in 2004 or 05. He would likely be sitting on a twelve final streak if so.

Yeah, he played in 2000 and 2001 and made both finals well before he reaches his prime.

I mentioned this before in the match thread and it is indeed an incredible achievement. Nadal won four tournaments at least seven times but they were all on clay whereas Fed's were won on all three surfaces. Kudos to him.

It's hard to win 7 non-clay titles at the same tournament if he never defended a title of clay, but nonetheless he's the king of clay.

Actually I just realised that I made a mistake here as Federer hasn't won a clay tournament seven times. Oops, my bad.

A 9-year gap from his first to most recent title at Wimbledon, Cincinnati, and Basel, and a 12-year gap at Dubai and Halle. Now, it's time to add #7 (and another 12-year gap) at the World Tour Finals.

I agree, doesn't mean squat, not even remotely interesting at this point.

My point is, as Federer wins more those "related" stats amass to a number of combined achievements.

In fact, they don't say much more than he is still winning (which is amazing), but then we have the total number of titles, if one is trying to measure his overall level of success.

Just another useless stat.

I agree. The only one that is monumental is winning Wimbledon 7 times. Fed, Rafa or Nole winning these non-slam events is historically insignificant. Everyone knows without blinking an eye that Rafa has won 9 FO's. But who knows (or cares) how many MC's, Barcelona's or Rome's he has? I now it's a ton. No one knows the actual number and no one cares, probably not even Rafa himself.

I guess it comes down to how you view the stat. I view it as yet another addition to Federer's long list of records, and one that is an excellent indication of his longevity. Fourteen of the titles won at Dubai, Halle, Cincinnati, and Basel were won post-2009.

Great, but it pales in comparison with his 17-6-302 and other GS records.

Absolutely....those will ultimately be the stats to which his legacy is best remembered.

Just another useless stat.

Wouldn't consider them completely useless....winning a professional tour level tournament 7 times is a remarkable achievement and I think we might be waiting some time until we see any other player do it on 5 separate occasions....especially when you consider one of the 5 is a Slam, another is a M1000 and none are 250's.

I don't mean "useless" as not worthy in itself.

It is worthless to pile those stats in separate (newer) categories just for the sake of establishing new "records".

Of course that it is highly impressive.

Not as impressvie as him winning Wimb 7 times. The most impressive is reaching 10 Wimb finals something not even Nadal has at RG.

But it is a bit impressive considering that he got 7 titles at Dubai,Basel and Cincy beating the likes of Murray,Djokovic,Nadal,Wawrinka etc.

Not three surfaces, but three different sets of conditions. Indoor and outdoor hard aren't really different surfaces.
