Federer being cautious.

There was a time when Roger Federer was seen on the slopes and even on a football pitch.
Not anymore.
Federer has given up most recreational sports for fear of picking up an injury that will keep the 16-time Grand Slam winner off the tennis court.
He said at the Dubai Championships on Thursday he last skied three years ago but stopped after he fell ill, and he hasn't played much football regularly since 2001 when ``he was unable to move'' following several games.
Even a recent round of golf in Dubai with his parents raised alarms when his back hurt afterwards.
``To be quite honest, I do miss (skiing). I used to do it up until a few years ago,'' Federer said.
``Last time I skied was in 2008 when I had mono. Came back after the Australian Open, went skiing, and next day I got ill again. So I was like, OK, it's a sign for me. No more skiing. That's a pity.''
Federer said there will be plenty of time to pick up other sports after he retyres, which may be a while.
He doesn't turn 30 until August.
``I played a round of golf with my parents. It was my mom's birthday the other week here, and I went to play on the Emirates Golf (Club),'' he said.
``It was nice to do, but the same thing again. Next thing you know, your back hurts just a little bit.
``You just don't want to do it, because my body is accustomed to playing tennis right now.
``Honestly, I can wait for many more years until I can do all those sports really well. I actually do miss it, to do all those things a bit more often.''
He says he's sticking with sports that don't require him breaking a sweat.
``I can play ping pong. I can do that,'' he said.
``Yeah, I can play cards if that's a sport. Look, I'll be able to enjoy (other sports) much more when I'm done.''

Good attitude, Murray should learn from him injuring his wrist playing on his playstation (if that's a sport).

p.s. what an insult to ping-pong, haha.

Very good decision by Federer. If he hadn't gotten sick in 2008 or the lung thing in 2010, the tennis world would be in a different state today. i.e. No Nadal fluke runs.

roger's said he changed his mind and will play for another couple years after the 2012 olympics. Great to see, that talent needs to be around a while... who knows what he could do in his early thirties.

andre did some crazy **** in tournaments being 33,34, etc.

talking about "health care & management"...

federer is pretty intelligent using his body for what he needs it, giving it enough rest and not overstraining it.

this should be taught a couple of younger players, especially females. listen to your body is not a weakness but a strength and will pay off occasionally.

Fed also said he will now stick to the first 2 chapters of the Kamasutra, the rest is much too strenuous.

damn, that's when his decline started! No more skiing for the GOAT!!!

I'm a Fed fan but what is this? Nadal fluke runs? That's laughable. Nadal is the greatest player of this generation other than Fed. These two have proven they are above and beyond anyone else on tour. Nadal has had some questionable wins in the past, but the guy worked hard to improve his game on non-clay surfaces, and made it a goal to win every major title there is to win. Fed had his chances to stop Nadal on a few occasions but couldn't do it.

Fed's decline has got nothing to do with mono or injuries, it just what happens when you get a bit older and lose that extra step and timing, along with the young players improving and entering their prime.

Smart sacrifices by Roger, i mean even if he retires at 35 (probably sooner) its not like his legs will be done, he'll be able to ski and play as many football games to his hearts content. Wonder if Nad does the same?

How come like 99% of threads that have nothing to do with Nadal, somehow get turned into endless debates between *******s and Rafatards?

Good decision by Fed, Rafa should take some notes.
