Roger Federer has had an impressive year, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon Grand Slam titles.

The Swiss was a notable absentee on the clay courts this season, allowing Rafael Nadal to clear up at Roland Garros.

However, that could be about to change as Claudio Mezzadri has revealed Federer fully intends to compete on the clay in the New Year.

When asked if the world No 2 would be at the Rome Masters, Mezzadri told Italian outlet SportFace: “He said he intends to play the clay-court season in 2018.

“Federer is doing really well, I met him several times in Basel for lunch.

“He is a happy man, he is managing his career in the best way and will play for a few more years.”

However, Mezzadri revealed the tour is beginning to take its toll on the 36-year-old and it should come as no surprise if he does wind things down.

“After 20 years and 1400 tennis matches, to be able to maintain the necessary levels, it has to makes an impact,” he added.

“Talking to his coach I found that before playing a match Roger takes several hours of stretching and massage.

“Then he heats up and then back exercises, and after the game again, stretching and relaxation for the back.

“We understand, therefore, that picking and choosing his programme is crucial to ensure he does not over do it.”

Thoughts anyone? :eek::D

Interesting but how did Murray's wig get into the discussion?;)

Pros

- Can do well (possibly 2nd best clay courter in the world, conservatively top 5)

- Gives him a good shot at #1

Cons

- Does he have enough in the tank? Is it wiser to save the energy for non-clay?

- Opens up possiblities of losing mental edge if it doesn't go well

---

If he plays, I'd say it's more ballsy than wise... I do want to see him at the French at least, though, simply on principal

To be or not to be?

Returning to clay this year is a smart move on Fed's part if he's planning to win RG. Because right now he has the mental edge against Rafa, and his best chance of beating Rafa on clay is exploiting that. However, even on clay, that might not mean much against Rafa.

Too early to say anything. If he feels that he has a chance to get the #1 rank then he'll play otherwise he probably won't.

This could be true too. Its a situational type thing most likely. What if Nadal is injured? My money is on him to play then for sure. Lots of factors there.

Literally the most garbage news source possible. Federer could sneeze and they would report he has horse flu.

I’d like Fede getting his clay game into the top form and finals in RG.

If not winning, he’d still add some spice in the mix.

Well Federer is the type of player who could turn up to any tournament and still be a contender, even without tune ups beforehand. It wont surprise me if he plays all slams, and only a handful of masters next season along with WTF and Basel.

I don't think he'll play clay. Not as long as he feels he has a chance at Wimb.

And even if he does, he'll probably just play in 2 masters and not RG, where BO5 will be more damaging. And he'll most likely not reach Nadal on clay.

See, told you he'd play. 2017 was a special case, because of his injury and the amount of winning he did early on. It was a precaution to avoid another injury so soon. By now he is ready and comfortable that he can start to include the surface in his schedule again.

Rome/Roland Garros
Halle/Wimbledon
Cincinnati/USO

That’s a more than balanced summer schedule. That is not overplaying at all. A prep for each slam. Don’t know why people think not playing clay guarantees a Wimbledon title...

Thats perfect actually.

I don't think anyone thinks it would guarantee it. Some of us think skipping clay would enhance his chances, that's all.

The problem with this is that the opposite will happen (lose to Nadal, and lose the mental edge).

Federer won't do well on clay if Nadal, Djokovic, and Thiem are around. On the other hand, if he is within margin to regain #1 by vulturing 1000 points and hoping Nadal fails to defend 1000-2000 points, his intrinsic vanity might compell him to play. Despite his claims to the contrary, he does care about being #1 again.

Too early for any news, however credible, to be correct.

Who knows how he'll be physically or otherwise at the beginning of the clay season. Also depends on goals.

If the focus is Wimbledon then clay doesn't add much value.
