Roger Federer has had an impressive year, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon Grand Slam titles.

The Swiss was a notable absentee on the clay courts this season, allowing Rafael Nadal to clear up at Roland Garros.

However, that could be about to change as Claudio Mezzadri has revealed Federer fully intends to compete on the clay in the New Year.

When asked if the world No 2 would be at the Rome Masters, Mezzadri told Italian outlet SportFace: “He said he intends to play the clay-court season in 2018.

“Federer is doing really well, I met him several times in Basel for lunch.

“He is a happy man, he is managing his career in the best way and will play for a few more years.”

However, Mezzadri revealed the tour is beginning to take its toll on the 36-year-old and it should come as no surprise if he does wind things down.

“After 20 years and 1400 tennis matches, to be able to maintain the necessary levels, it has to makes an impact,” he added.

“Talking to his coach I found that before playing a match Roger takes several hours of stretching and massage.

“Then he heats up and then back exercises, and after the game again, stretching and relaxation for the back.

“We understand, therefore, that picking and choosing his programme is crucial to ensure he does not over do it.”

Thoughts anyone? :eek::D

I see no reason to play clay

Based on what?

I don't see any reason to believe he's top 5 on clay
Certainly not from recent results. He lost a lot of close ones that could have went the other way though. At his best level i believe he's up there. Those old days of clay success may be behind him , but I believe in Roger cause after all.. he's Roger.

If he feels playing on clay will be detrimental to his Wimb chances, Fed will skip it. He doesn't really have too much time on his side to make mistakes.

One year in the distant future they will be right, and you will look like a fool. :D

Yes, I suppose if they predict it for the next fifty years one day they will be right!! But I haven't forgiven them for predicting a "snow bomb" and total traffic disruption for a week when I had tickets for a theatre production I was desperate to see. Even though I kept telling myself "it's only the Express" it caused me a week of worry. Of course, the weather was fine.

Dude he trolls literally 24/7 go read some of that crap. That's why I said it.

But the actual post wasn't a troll post so shouldn't we encourage that by being nice? I'm sure if anyone was mad enough to go through all my posts they'd find some that were a bit salty.

Find a quotation that proves your point or otherwise you are just producing fiction.
Exactly. I read the Swiss press weekly and Fed has said the exact opposite: that clay isn't in his future. But people continue to be oblivious to this and post endless threads about Fed playing clay.

Psst: he's not.

Just accept that Fed was to scared to face Rafa on clay. He said so himself. Fed has been honest about this. Why can't his fans just face the facts?

I agree with you that Federer didn't want to face Nadal on clay this year but it's also true that Nadal didn't want to face Federer on several occasions off clay and has admitted so to the press.

Shouldn't even bother. Clay sucks as a surface, most pros hate it.

It's a much wiser move to skip the entire clay season, or if he is gonna play, play in 1 masters 1000, Istanbul, and then RG. Don't bother with Monte Carlo and other tournaments.

If he does play the entire clay season, it could go awfully bad, possibly not even making the second week of RG.

Great for RAFA. he should beat up on Federer and regain his confidence over roger that he lost when he keeps getting his butt kicked by him on fast low bouncing hard courts.

Pros

- Can do well (possibly 2nd best clay courter in the world, conservatively top 5)

- Gives him a good shot at #1

Cons

- Does he have enough in the tank? Is it wiser to save the energy for non-clay?

- Opens up possiblities of losing mental edge if it doesn't go well

---

If he plays, I'd say it's more ballsy than wise... I do want to see him at the French at least, though, simply on principal

he hasn't been top 2 on clay after 2010.
(11 - Nadal, Djokovic
12 - Nadal, Djokovic
13 - Nadal, Djokovic
14 - Nadal, Djokovic
15 - Djokovic, Stan
16 - Djokovic, Murray
17 - Nadal,Thiem)

and no, not possibly 2nd best CCer in the world.

Nadal, Thiem , Djoko, Stan, Murray
(assuming last 3 are healthy) push him out of top 5.

throw in Zverev who won Rome last year.
