Comments :

1. Federer started off badly in the first set. Not getting enough first serves in (36% first serves in ) and was hitting a lot of UEs.
Coria was playing really well.

2. In the 2nd set, Federer started getting a higher % of first serves in and playing better, though the he did commit a few UEs. Coria's level dipped to some extent. Federer saved BP at 0-0 , held and then broke to make it 2-0. But was broken back. then they both held serve until 4-5 Coria. Federer broke with an excellent game to take the set.

3. 3rd set started in a somewhat similar way. Coria was broken at 0-1, this time with a UE filled game from him. He was broken again later in the set and federer took the set 6-2. Federer served really well and played well in this set in general. Coria was below par.

4. 4th set again had Coria down 0-2 and he couldn't get back from that. He played a good set, but federer was in full flow and hitting winners all over the place.

5. At the start of the 4th set, Coria took a timeout for blisters on his right hand. didn't look that good.

6. With this win, Federer broke Coria's 31 match win streak on clay .

7. All in all, a pretty good performance from Federer, but not great and a good one from Coria, although nowhere near his best.

Been a while since I've seen it, thought the quality was better than this. Regardless, Federer was certainly considered the favorite to win RG that year.

AM's :
Fed : 21.86%
Coria : 12.09%

Those are good on clay (fed's better than good).

I thought Fed/Coria were considered about equal as favorites to win RG 2004.

This was a pretty entertaining final I thought (like Moose I also thought it was a better match than the stats showed), and I thought the 10th game of the 2nd set was the turning point. Federer had never played Coria before and I think that this was a contributor to his poor performance early on (even during his peak years that happened to him a few times when facing players for the very first time).

While I certainly thought that Federer was a contender for the RG title in 2004, I was still a bit sceptical about him winning it after his back to back 1st round defeats in 2002 and 2003, despite the fact that he was obviously a completely different animal by then (from the 2003 Masters Cup onwards).

This was definitely one of the most impressive masters series victories of his career given how difficult his draw was from start to finish; Gaudio, Lapentti, Gonzalez, Moya, Hewitt and Coria. All 6 of those players had won clay court titles before (in Hewitt's case one on har-tru) and none of them were weak on the surface. And of course he beat all the other winners of the biggest clay court events that year, Gaudio who went on to win RG, Moya who had won Rome and Coria who had won Monte-Carlo.

I found Coria incredibly annoying during his semi-final victory against Ljubicic with his never-ending whining, showing incorrect ball marks to the umpire, and trying to play the line judge role himself, so while I enjoyed his style of play I was rooting against him in this final.
