Comments :

1. Fed got off to a pretty good start, while Davy got off to a poor one. In the 1st set, Federer broke Davy twice, first one was mostly Davy errors and 2nd one mostly good play from Fed. Davy was rolling his serves in to get a high% of serves in.

2. In the 2nd set, davy started to going for more on his serves and was effective.
But fed still broke him once to go up 3-2. then there was a great point which federer finished with a cracking I/O Fh to make it 30-0...then suddenly , davy plays an inspired 4 points and breaks fed (all winners or forced errors). wins 3 more points on serve ...totally 7 points in a row.

3. Fed got a BP at 4 all, but Davy saved it with excellent play and then 2 more good points to hold. But then federer broke again at 5 all with some pretty good play and held serve to take the 2nd set 7-5.

4. 3rd set, Federer went up a break, but then got broken back. This time with some sloppy play. Then broke davy again and took the 3rd set 6-4.
In the 3rd set, Fed was fooling around a bit with some net play.

5. Fed served well for most part, FH was firing, BH was solid , was moving around great and returned pretty well.
a couple of moments of sloppiness aside aside, it was a pretty good match from Federer.

6. Davy played a below par first set, but played some good tennis in sets 2 and 3 - served well enough , returned well enough, was moving well and was hitting groundstrokes well from the baseline. Federer however ruthlessly exploited his vulnerability to the slice/short slice/at the net throughout the match.

7. Fed's kick serve out wide on the AD side didn't work that well as davy hit quite a few of them for return winners/forced errors with the return off them.

8. Davy had come into the match after a 5-setter vs Haas (from 2 sets to love down). This was his 2nd slam semi (after RG 2005). He had played Federer tough at AO 2006 in the QF. That match was definitely a better performance from him than this one.
And in contrast, Federer was clearly better in this one, although he did play well enough in the AO match to ward off Davy there.

Yeah, pretty much how I remember this match. USO 2006 had very good stuff from the 4R onwards. Federer put up a nice match against flat hitting Gicquel, a great showdown against Blake, this semifinal, and the final against an in-form Roddick.

Wow only 18 approaches by Fed. Low number of approaches for him seem to be a common thing in your stats.

This one is definitely on the lower end. He was a baseliner by 2006 (a few matches aside).
Which other matches are you referring to btw ?

you had him with only 15 approaches vs Karlovic at 09 W. I still find that rather amazing.

And I see you had him with 17 vs Nalbandian at 07 Madrid, 19 vs Hewitt at 05 IW. 42 vs Hewitt in long 4 sets at 05 USO. 9 vs Berdych at 06 RG. 18 vs Cilic at 18 AO. 27 vs Roddick at 05 W. 43 in epic 77 game five setter vs Roddick at 09 W.
I realize he's been a baseliner for majority of his career, but these numbers are sort of nuts, esp since many consider him the best volleyer of his era. And that he would win majors easily in eras where everyone serve and volleyed on every serve.

its not that surprising tbh.
91 of the 167 points in the match were unreturned serves, 4 were DFs.

As I mentioned in that thread:

Given the massive advantage he had over Karlovic from the baseline , it makes sense. Rather than risk giving Karlovic a shot at connecting 2-3 returns in a row and passing him, he preferred to stay back.Karlovic wasn't coming in that much on the return.

Federer came in quite a bit in the next match vs Haas to take the net away from Haas.
Stats for that semi : 2009 Wimbledon - d Haas - 3 sets - 38 of 43 (88%) .... % of points at the net - 43 of 193 (23%)

Guys like Ancic, Stepanek, LLodra are better pure volleyers. But apart from Ancic for some time, none of them were top 10 guys. So he's the best volleyer among consistent top 10 guys.

The numbers are spread over a wide range tbh. Trust me, its not as nuts as you think. .

He stayed back more if/when : a) he was more comfortable at the baseline b) opposite player didn't try to approach the net on his serve.

Slam semis :

vs Nadal :
https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/ind...in-his-grand-slam-finals.432432/#post-7718217

947/5643 (16.78%)

vs Djokovic :
https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/ind...in-his-grand-slam-finals.432432/#post-7718228

839/6010 (13.96%)

He's come in more vs Nadal than vs Djokovic even though Nadal is the better passer because he is more comfortable vs Djokovic from the baseline.
This is especially true apart from the 2014-2015 stretch under Edberg.

the matches you mentioned :

Nalbandian Madrid 07 - this was low. (10.9%)
Hewitt IW 05 - this was low (10.67%) ....too comfortable from the baseline vs Hewitt on a slower HC.
Hewitt USO 05 - 42/289 = 14.5% ....that's only slightly on the lower side.
Berdych RG 06 - definitely low.too comfortable from the baseline in that match. came in a lot more vs Nadal in the final.
2006 French..........……lost to Nadal........….4 sets............30 of 41............73% :::: 41 of 230............18%
Cilic AO 18 - definitely low (~6%) amongst his lowest in slam semis/finals
Roddick Wim 05 - 27/175 (15.43%) ....slightly on the lower side for Wim vs Roddick. He was comfortable from the baseline, but did in come in to an extent and had good success there.
Roddick Wim 09 - 43/436 (~10%) ...on the lower side definitely.

but quite a few of the other matches are at 15% and above.

Hewitt USO 04 (that I just finished) : 34(mine) or 35(official)/164 (21.34%)
Ferrero Wim 05 : 43/209 (20.57%)
Agassi Miami 05 : 22/126 (17.46%)
Lopez USO 07 : 33/198 (16.67%)
Hewitt TMC 04 : 18/102 (17.64%)
Roddick Wim 03 : 48/183 (26.23%) --- SnVed on every 1st served and only a couple of 2nd serves. quite a few aces. that brings the % down.
Nadal RG 07 : 39/255 (15.29%)
Hewitt Wim 04 : 40/227 (17.62%)
Nadal YEC 06 : 25/141 (17.73%)
Nadal YEC 07 : 18/87 (20.69%)

some of the other lower ones though :

Djokovic YEC 10 : 15/112 (13.39%)
Coria Hamburg 04 : 26/215 (12.09%)
Nalbandian Madrid 06 : 10/94 (10.63%)
Djokovic AO 08 : 25/222 (11.26%)
Ferrero YEC 03 : 14/102 (13.72%)

Counting the matches I did, 11 have > 15%, 11 are below 15%

Out of those I think only these 7 are especially low considering everything:
Nalby Madrid 07
Berdych RG 06
Cilic AO 18
Roddick Wim 09
Nalby Madrid 06
Djokovic AO 08
Davy USO 06

(you could arguably put in the Karlovic one as well)
