Head-to-head - Federer 15-5. Fed won the last 2 matches, however, both in late 2013 so ancient history.

They haven't played in Miami yet but the closest you get was their 2012 IW match which Fed won easily 6-3 6-2.

It's an interesting match-up as this is Fed's first match post surgery and Del Potro is on his way back to the top 10/20.

With Del Potro's win over Pella he should be ranked around 330th now. If he beats Fed he'll be back in the top 300.

Hope you're right. Expecting same, but there's a psych element. Even tho 15-5 H2H, some epic battles, and Fed's going on 35 now. Would like Fed to reach QFs, so hope he can get right back on the horse here. Wouldn't it be some irony if Fed pounds someone else's "weak" BH now? ;)
I wouldn't mind seeing Fed's own backhand get pounded in the semifinals. ;)

Delpo looked very solid in his win off both wings.
I could see so much improvement from Delpo in just the last month.
I think he could beat Fed, if not will at least take him to 3 tough sets.
Fed is the unknown here and not Delpo.

Is it just me or is current Del Po's FH actually better than current Feds FH? Seriously that JMDP FH is butter.

This depends entirely on Federer and how he's feeling after the layoff. If he's still in good nick, should be two easy sets by just hitting to Del Potro's BH.

I have been losing interest in tennis outside the majors as of late, but I'll have to make an exception for this one. The tour could really use a guy like Delpo. Here's hoping he stays injury-free (part 6)

Delpo and Wawarinka are the true giant killers. They won't pile up titles due to their inconsistency (plus debilitating injuries in delpo 's case). But they were often the only player who could deny the dominant no 1 from a title.

Actually I think the organizers of this tournament Double Faulted the match away, Del Po is very popular here and so is Federer, they should have arranged the schedule so that they met in the quarter finals, once one of them is gone the fans that paid to see either one of these play will probably not pay to see the rest of the tournament, so tickets sales attributed to seeing a specific player Del po or Federer are gone.

Agree with @Djokovic2011 here that anything less than Fed in straights would be surprising. Fed can easily exploit Delpo's BH. Watched a bit of his practice with Dimitrov yesterday he seemed fine and should be ready for the match.

Normally Del Potro would be a tough matchup for Fed but Fed will most likely be in fine form + Del Potro's BH is gonna be a huge Lopez like liability in the match.

Fed will exploit that wing and will most likely win in straights.

Federer's first match back...may favor his knee and Del Potro will favor his backhand so expect Federer to play some devilish slices to Del Potro's backhand.

Federer in 3.

Don't know if this was posted before - sorry if it was, I didn't see it - but apparently Fed's knee injury was due to a freak bathroom accident.

"“I'm excited,” Federer said. “Anxious to find out how it's going to react, is it going to be different day-to-day, how is it going to feel after the match and so forth… I like Juan Martin. We've had good matches over the years, Paris, five sets twice, US Open obviously. It's nice to see him back. I haven't seen him play at all since he's been back, so I'm not quite sure what to expect, even though my coach went to see his match yesterday. At the end I'm going to focus on my own game tomorrow… managing my problems that I've had the last few months. Just also enjoy it out there. We're both in a similar situation. His injury was much, much greater. That's why I'm really pleased for him that he was able to find a way back onto the tour.”

Nice, gentle comments from Feds about a guy he obviously likes. :)

Why? Anything less than a routine straight sets win for Federer would be very surprising.
Agree.

I watched some of Delpo vs Pella - so sad. Delpo is a shell of his former self. His BH is not ATP level. Unless Fed gets incredibly stubborn and tries to 'break down the stronger wing' this should be something like 62 63.

Del Po got tired the 2nd set against Pella, His Conditioning is not quite ATP level yet.
