Federer ends partnership with Edberg

few months ago roger said that he is playing his best tennis ever, know he is saying that "quality of todays tennis is stronger than it has ever been" in his statement... what else do you need as a proof that roger at his best loses to novak at his best, and that this is the strongest era ever?! fedfans?

Well Edberg and Federer were a great team and Edberg really helped Federer's game. The volley and the serve are the most noticeable improvements in my eyes. I've never seen Federer volley like he does now. Oh well. I don't really see what Ljubicic can do for him though.

Working with raonic would have been more fun for Lubi.

Fed should stop looking for coaches and instead look for some elixir of youth

To be honest i am surprised that the partnership continued for 2 years. Initially they had agreed for 12-16 weeks only, but because of their mutual respect and Roger's improved confidence in comparison to 2013, they decided to extend it to full 2014 season. Edberg mentioned that they decided to do it for one more year at the end of 2014, it worked in some ways, but perhaps the results were not as desired.
I reckon Roger should retain Stefan for some tourneys in Europe or GS, a similar sort of strategy helped Becker-Vajda combination.

Edberg released a statement to ATPWorldTour.com, saying: “Roger and I had a wonderful two years together. When he originally approached me at the end of 2013, I committed to work with him for only a year. It became very clear from the start that this was going to be a special partnership, working with the greatest ambassador tennis has ever seen. It was exciting for me to be back out on tour and to see that the sport has made so much progress.

“The quality of tennis today is stronger than it has ever been. After an amazing 2014, I decided to continue on for another year, but with a clear understanding that it would be my last year given the time commitment. I believe Roger still has a lot left to give to the sport of tennis and is capable of winning the big events. Roger and I will remain close friends and I will always feel part of the Federer team. I hope to try and come watch Roger play some tournaments in 2016.”

Thanks for that. So it seems that it was Edberg's decision all along!

YES, get Eddie back, if even only on a semi basis!

WOO-HOO!!! I've been calling for this since the end of 2014.

"He made back-to-back Wimbledon finals"..."he made the US Open final". Big wow! Federer didn't hire Edberg to help him make it to slam finals, but to help him win slam titles, and it simply wasn't happening. All that happened were blown opportunities: the 5th set at 2014 Wimbledon (please, spare me the "Nole simply upped his game" response. Been there, argued that. No one's opinion is going to change): the 2014 US Open semis; the failure to convert break point after break point in the 2015 US Open final. Then there's the 4th set loss to Gulbis at 2014 Roland Garros (the first time in 10 years Federer didn't make it to at least the FO QFs) and the 3rd set loss to Seppi at the 2015 Australian Open (where Federer had made it to at least the semis in 11 consecutive years). And don't even get me started on 2015 Wimbledon, where Roger played like gangbusters in the semis, but like a pussycat in the final.

I think to have any possibility of winning another slam, Federer needed a change, and I'm now much more optimistic about 2016! This is great news!!

Yeah it's Edbergs fault that Federer can't capitalize on his opprtunities. Coaches are not there to finish the big moments for you in the match. Federer has always been troubled when having BPs.

Predictable.

As for Ljubicic joining - less predictable.

I reckon Rog just does not like having Stefans around himself. It brings attention of another pops, and he is trying to stay away from it.

It's a shame but I think Edberg's influence will live on. I do wonder what changes Ljubicic could make.
