Federer fans - what are your interest levels for Wimbledon?

I am 49yrs old and love my sport. For as long as I can remember even going back to when I was 12yrs old, Wimbledon has always been one of the main highlights of the sporting calendar and one of the events I have enjoyed the most and really looked forward to. For all of these years there have always been players who I have really enjoyed watching either as an emotionally invested fan or other reasons.

I remember Becker winning Wimbledon for the first time and enjoying that Becker/Edberg era. Then after that came Agassi who I was a huge fan of and he did ok at Wimbledon winning it of course and also having some other good runs. Then came Federer and in amongst those guys where Tim Henman and Andy Murray who provided interest and a reason to watch from a British point of view. I loved watching Henman's runs.

However I'm thinking of this years Wimbledon with no Federer and for the first time in almost 40 years I'm struggling to muster any interest in it at all. I've never liked Djokovic and I have no interest whatsoever in watching boring one dimensional, limited players like Hurkacz and Berrettini. Murray maybe provides a snippet of interest but that may not last longer than a couple of rounds.

A strange thing happened the other day. Whilst I can't exactly say I'm now a Nadal fan, for some reason I seem to have warmed to him a bit more lately. It may be because I have come to terms with the fact that he has surpassed Federer's slam record now and lets face it Federer isn't coming back to compete for slams and that maybe only now am I recognising his achievements a bit more. But when I heard Nadal intends to play Wimbledon it gave me a strange little lift as at least it adds a little bit more interest in Wimbledon and I never thought I would say it but I would quite like to see him do well. The other benefit is that he is a player who has the capability to stop Djokovic from going within 1 title of Federer's Wimbledon record which quite frankly would be vomit inducing.

So Federer fans how are you feeling about Wimbledon with no Federer? Are there any players who could spark your interest and give you a reason to watch it?

Glad to hear you feel the Nadal effect :D we knew what the peak Fedal rivalry was like, its nice to have him still around holding it down.

Yeah. I've never been a fan of his style and of course hated Federer's defeats to him but I've never really disliked him either. Maybe I'm needing someone to attach myself to to keep tennis there as a sport to follow. Hard to explain actually but I will probably watch some of his matches and find myself wanting him to win. If he won it of course he would have a shot at the calendar slam which would be amazing to witness.

I've watched Wimbledon since I was 4 years old. I watched it long before Fed came around and will watch it long after he retires.

The interesting story for me is to see if Nadal can go three legs up on the CYGS. I'd also like to see Murray do well and cause some upsets. I have zero interest watching Berrettini, Hubi, Tsits or anyone else who has no chance to hoist the trophy.

Yeah Murray and Nadal are really the only interesting stories for me as well. Just sad to have Wimbledon with no Federer for the first time.

Any player that will consistently play well can spark my interest. Pre-tournament, I think I'll be actively rooting for FAA and Alcaraz, possibly Hurkacz. Don't know if any of them can win it all but hoping at least one of them will to go deep in the tournament.

Want a Rafa - Alcaraz match because they both will be playing with variety and you love to see it. Djokovic - Kyrgios could be very interesting.

I've never been the biggest fan of Nadal's playing style but dude has the capacity to generate interest. He bores me a lot on clay and to an extent on hard also. But I find grassdal quite fascinating, the reason being his inability to play his normal game.

Djokovic no longer has the personality that interests me(used to like him until '12 or so), and never had an interesting game style especially on hard and grass. Don't find him boring on clay due to some reason.

Same. Almost exactly.

Nadal is playing some of the most fun tennis these days. He’s attacking, he’s creative, and he’s shortening points with his smart aggression.

I dare say he’s playing more like his older brother than ever and I like it a lot!

To quote Andy Roddick, "slim". None of these mugs are going to be able to present any real danger (not the fake stuff when the match is tight at some point with a struggling mediocre oldalovic but you know the bums will choke hard if pushed just a little extra bit beyond mediocrity) at all whatsoever. Will watch bits to lol at the clownery on display, that's it.

Grassdal is indeed fun to watch.

Alcaraz is a player that does interest me but Im assuming grass isnt gonna be a surface he will excell on.

I feel pretty much exactly as you do. Could not have articulated it much better. I don’t want to see Djokovic win and although I would prefer that Nadal does not extend his Slam lead even more, I have come to respect his abilities, achievement and dedication to the sport immensely (and all without any of the controversy that Djokovic keeps creating for himself), so a win for Rafa would clearly be a lesser evil and even a bittersweet win. Because watching any of the other players win, with the exception of Alcaraz, would be kind of a boring outcome (for me).

well I put the money I was gonna bet on Nadal on a 3 leg parlay on 3 baseball game 1st innings going scoreless......and lost. So I am no longer interested in tennis, looks like I'll be drowning in a bottle

My excitement level will never be as high without him here because he's my favorite player to watch, especially on grass. But it won't change how much of the tournament I watch or how closely I pay attention to what's going on.

It’s amazing how he’s obsessed with telling me I’m not a good person for years, quite bizarre.
:Dyou're a good person michael we know/feel it, yea i agree that position to judge someone here so hard is not good position at all, and why being focused on that problem whereas there's no such problem here, why bother with all this stuff i don't get it, way better just enjoy this forum, enjoy life and and stay positive etc.

Zero interest without Federer and very little in professional tennis in general. The tour is bad right now.
Yeah I feel like Im in the same place. Tennis is a great sport and Ive watched it for almost 40yrs but currently there isnt anybody on the tour that I feel I can emotionally invest myself in and give me a reason to watch it anymore.

As a lifelong Federer fan, I can honestly say after all that has happened after the last two years....
That I'm looking forward to it, and genuinely want Novak to win it.

Honestly, I haven't watched tennis since the start of the pandemic.

I think the last match that I saw live was the 2019 US Open final.

I'm sure that I won't be watching Wimbledon this year or the US Open.

Not intrigued to see how Alcaraz goes?

Can't imagine it would be worse than last year tbh, that Wimbledon was boring af.

He killed Fedfans on that fateful day...it does not surprise me that he has so many haters (fedal fans)

He hasn't done himself any favours...

Maybe he can use his positive thinking to cleanse what he hears so instead of hearing boos he can hear the crowd cheering for him...

Honestly, spreading crap like that is actually quite dangerous... as a tennis champion he has devoted followers (yourself being a prime example) and I would not put it past some of them to be stupid enough to buy the fraud he's selling...

Can imagine a kid somewhere thinking he can cleanse polluted water with positive thoughts then drinks it and gets sick...

I will watch because it's my favorite tournament and because I like betting, but the excitement and enthusiasm that I used to have isn't really there anymore. Expecting more of the same old same old, and on top of that, there aren't any players right now that I would be excited to watch play on grass. Shapo would be one of them, but he has become hard to support with his inconsistent results.
