Federer/Graf - Nadal/Seles

Except that Steffi's and Federer's game have little in common, except for an exceptional forehand and good footwrok.
And except for the fact while Nadal dominated Federer in head to head even while Federer was dominating the mens game, Seles couldnt even dominate her head to head with Graf while she was dominating the womens game let alone while Graf was. And except for that while Nadal could beat Federer on any surface and Federer literally couldnt touch Nadal on clay from day 1, it is Graf who was capable of beating Seles on any surface even during Seles's two year dominance of the game, and Seles who could never touch Graf on grass, and arguably any faster surface.

The comparision fails along those lines more than anything else. Seles never inflicted even close to the personal damage on Graf that Nadal has been able to do to Federer. In the head to head rivalry aspect Seles is much closer to being Federer than Nadal, in fact she pretty much is Federer- humiliated in a slam final by the discussed rival while ranked #1 in the World while never doing likewise back, no feeling of certainty of beating said main rival on any surface while unsure of any chance to beat main rival on one surface imparticular, never for a moment leading the head to head. The one aspect she is not Federer of course is being the more successful player compared to her rival, but given Nadal's youth that could change in the future.

And in the slams denied aspect of it all Seles again is not Nadal, but in fact Federer, and Graf is in fact Nadal. Graf has probably denied Seles 5 slams- 89 French Open, 1992 Wimbledon, 1995 U.S Open, 1996 U.S Open, 1999 French Open and Seles has probably denied Graf 2 slams- 1990 French Open and 1993 Australian Open. Federer has denied Nadal 2 slams- Wimbledon 2006 and Wimbledon 2007, while Nadal has denied Federer about 5- 2005 French Open, 2006 French Open, 2007 French Open, 2008 Wimbledon, and 2009 Australian Open.

Federer has a winning H2H against Nadal, even against a #1 Nadal?
And Nadal has never beaten Fed on a fast surface (eg. grass)?
Here is a good point of comparision.

Nadal at his peak vs Federer in French Open final: Nadal wins 6-0, 6-3, 6-1
Nadal at his peak vs Federer in Wimbledon final: Nadal wins in 5 sets

Seles at her peak vs Graf in French Open final: Seles wins 6-2, 3-6, 10-8
Seles at her peak vs Graf in Wimbledon final: Seles loses 6-2, 6-1

Yep I really see the parallel.

LOL - good one

By the same token there is a parallel in Fed/Borg vs Nad/Mac or Evert/Graf vs Nava/Seles and so forth...

These kind of alleged 'parallels' disregard playing styles and other important factors. The only relevant parallel here is that an established player is followed by another one... and they go head to head happily ever after... zzzz

I do see (I'd like to see) a lot of similarities between Roger and Steffi (because I like both a lot). I see similarities in the playing styles of both players, but I think circumstances (type of opponents and their differences in personalities) made them the players they were/are. Graf started out more versatile like a Roger Federer (she, like Sabatini) played an allcourt game which included a good topspinbackhand and a sufficient netgame, still the slice, the serve, the forehand aided by that incredible footwork, were the main shots and the key to her succes. Federer basically the same, his shots are more textbook wise, more smooth, got more shots but the dynamics of their games are alike. Put in a big first serve, position yourself to hit the killerforehand from positions only capabable by extraordinary athletes (which Nadal is as well)

As for the Nadal/Seles comparison, I'd like to throw in Gabriela Sabatini as well. She, on a good day was much more dangerous to Graf and hit those hight topspinshots to the Graf backhand.

Of course their are many differences, but there aren't many tennis stories which come close to the 1995 US Open Final when two number on seeds, Monica and Steffi face. Roger and Rafa give the same excitement IMO.
