Federer has an abductor problem - set to rest in the next 2 days

I don't know if this would fit better the "federer news" thread, but since he's on the verge of playing a slam final, I think it deserves its own thread.

Federer has an abductor problem, but hopes that with two days rest, he will be ready for Rafa - or quite possibly Grigor Dimitrov

Is it also known which abductor that is?

But basically... Whoever wins in the other semi is champion by default. Go Griggs!

Apparently fed just said something about leaving it all on the court and if he can't walk for the next 5 months that's okay......

He has an adductor problem.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, learned what adductor and abductor are just recently, but wanted to point out so there's no confusion.:)

He's had this issue for a week apparently. It's not stopped him so far. For now until the end of time I will never curse the AO scheduling, the extra days rest may be a Godsend.

I think the scheduling is ludicrious. Completely unfair to give one finalist an extra day's rest, particularly if the semi's ending up being long, gruelling matches. Both semi finals should take place on the same day.

Well, they have to sell tickets as someone have to pay for that three roofed courts and hawkeye on almost every court, even if it's on the expense of fairness with the players.

Don't disagree but sure didn't phase Nadal in 2009 after a 5+ hour match. It's a small advantage but that's about it. Still need to take 3 sets off a really good player does Roger if he wants this.

I seemed to be in minority in match thread but I feel like there was some gamesmanship there. If he was that dead Stan would have finished him off.
Personally I am not sure Federer would do such a thing, but it was totally unnecessary saying that Stan's physio has some magic hands going on. I mean, didn't you recover after your own MTO to win the 5th set Roger LOL.

He did and that's why he made the comment about the physio's magic hands. Federer was talking about his own MTO, saying that he just hoped the treatment would work, and he praised the physio who treated him because it did. I'm not sure what Stan has to do with that.

Ooops, the news I was reading translated it badly. According to those, Federer said that Stan's physio has magic hands, not his own. Poorly done by whoever did that because it made Federer sound a lot different.

More than just the adductor group plays a role in adduction...gracilis, pectineus, and the rest of the adductor group (longus, brevis).

It's a groin problem, people.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the physio that treated him, not Stan.

Are you a medical student or graduate? Can you tell how serious this problem could become if he overexerts himself? Federer said that he'd give it his all even if he won't be able to walk for 5 months but it can't be that bad, right?

Rog said it's not too serious, he's got two days to rest. He was still defending decently even in the 5th today. He mostly lacking decisiveness and the right intent to go for it off the ground.

Well a thigh/groin abductor, basically a strain can heal within a week if it's Grade 1.

CLEARLY, if Roger is to be believe and it kicked in the 2nd game of the match, I'm sure he'll be fine on Sunday.

No, I'm not. @RogueFLIP is a physical therapist though, so maybe he'd be able to tell you.

I didn't watch the match or see the treatment, but since he continued on I'd say that it's not that serious. His hip abduction might be limited, so I wouldn't expect to see any splits, but he has world class physios and trainers who know what they're doing. I'm sure he'll be fine.

Fine probably. But to me, he played his worst match since the 2nd round - and that could very well be movement related (he did say he felt it slowed him down) and this level ain't gonna cut it in the final.

But the fact that he could still beat a top 5 player despite that is an encouraging sign.

Feels like this whole tournament's been a Godsend for Roger, what with the scheduling and Murrovic going out early. All he needs now is for Dimi to do his dirty work tomorrow and it'll be the icing on the cake! You must be delighted mate. :)

It is, but to me Stan was the better play in all sets but the 2nd (and even there, Fed wasn't clearly better). Stan basically played poor in all 3 deciding breaks Fed got in the sets, Fed won.

Beating two top-5 players and another top-10 player ain't exactly a cup-cake draw either though. Fed can still beat Murray, but Rafa, especially if he moves and hits his groundies like today will be too much.

I bet you it will be miraculously healed for the final and also miraculously re-surface gain should he lose that match
Sounds like you just want him to lose otherwise you hate it. Must have a rather unfulfilled life mate. Otherwise you wouldn't care.

Getting put in the top half has certainly paid off so far in terms of the extra days rest - it's not like Federer had an easy draw though. I do think Federer would have taken Murray but probably suffered in the long term. When Djokovic went out he was so far from a potential meeting with Federer it didn't really resonate for me. The cherry on top would be Federer beating Nadal in the final but I prefer icing to cherries so I'll be happy with Rog vs Dimi final :p I can see Dimitrov beating Federer as well though mind you.

I'm happy Federer gets to compete for another slam but I don't really believe he's going to win it. I'm mostly happy he's come back so strong so soon.

who knows, since no one seems to be giving dimi a chance, he might just end up being the biggest surprise of this tournament and win the whole thing like del potro in 2009.

yeah I want his last slam to be at Wimby or USO. This run sets him up nicely for the rest of the year

iirc, he said this year he dreams of winning one more Wimbledon/USO. He definitely, understandably so, seems to favor his chances there, especially at wimbledon.

If he had to would he have not done so in the match against Nishikori when he was down.

F me, this is 2014 WTF all over again. No smile after he won, no smile in the press conference.

Whoever (Nadal) wins the second SF has the AO in his bag.

idk about the press conference, but his reaction might have been subdued due to stan being on the other side. tbh, after he won and looked up at this box, he did kind of seem emotional. hoping the next two days does great wonders for him

It's a good thing he has 2 days off but if this is a more serious problem I'm not even sure Fed will play.

So MTO was not tactical right fanboys?
Fed himself can answer your question -->

“I only did take the timeout because I thought, ‘He took one already, maybe I can take one for a change,’ because I'm not a believer that we should be allowed to take a lot of time-outs. But I took it after the set break. People know I don't abuse the system.”

He can't be 100% for Sunday, but who knows at this stage if Nadal will make it all the way through a minimum of 6 sets healthily. Fed has a decent excuse in his back pocket if he loses, he might feel it out for a set or two and can always play it up if Nadal starts to crank it up (all assuming he beats Grigor).

Either way, it looks like it could be a great 2017 for both guys if they can stay injury free. Let's enjoy it while it lasts.
