Federer has cursed the ability of men’s champions to defend the US Open

A bit like Tom Riddle cursing the Defence against the Dark Arts post at Hogwarts, so no one could hold the post for more than one year. Federer is the last man to defend his US Open title in 2008. Since then he’s cursed each subsequent Champion to ensure that none of the champions since can hold their title for more than one year.

When will this end? Who will break the curse?

Defending the USO is really hard because it's at the end of the year and it's a surface a lot of guys can play well on. Sampras likely would have won 4 in a row if not for injury (which underscores the point), but even he had an earlier loss (although Korda was dangerous) in his prime. Winning 5 straight USOs and making 6 straight finals is quite something. If he hadn't choked 3 years in a row it would have been ridiculous.

5 in a row at USO has to be the biggest achievement in tennis given that its the final slam of the year and considering the playing conditions and considering HC is a neutral surface which means more quality players to deal with.

Actually it has been tough to defend Wimbledon also, apart from Djokovic nobody has defended it from 2008 onwards.
Regarding uso Djokovic unlucky run of finals are more responsible, he went into 6 finals in 7 years but won only 2 times

Are you thinking he’d have eight titles in a row without the chokes? Assuming no butterfly effect from changing the 2009 and 2010 results, I think he’d beat Nadal in 2011 but lose to him in 2010, so have seven wins and one losing final in the streak

no, but 6 straight obviously possible given it was basically in the bag, and that would have been sick to win 6 straight at any major, much less the one it's maybe the hardest to do it at. 2010 he doesn't beat Nadal. 2011, I think he would have an ok chance, in theory he should win but mentally against Nadal in slams he was a little suspect in that period.

Even 2012 that tournament was pretty winnable but the walkover vs Fish happened and he played a bit flat vs Berdych (I think all that playing the past 12 months caught up to him there, over 90+ matches), but that tournament was maybe a bit of an anomaly with the hurricane rolling through, and ever since then he hasn't really had a good USO besides 2015. Berdych to his credit did play damn well in that match, Federer even in that form could still beat plenty of people, as usual berdbrain mugged it up the next round.

2012 was a weird tournament. Djokovic played one of his best US Open matches in the QF v Del Potro, but way off base in the hurricane in both SF and F. Murray not on great form but held it together much better.

You bring up a good point!

I believe nobody has won a single slam more than 5x in a row (5x straight win records exist at RG, WB, USO). The highest at AO is 3x I think? So on HC, this makes Fed's 5x straight at USO ridiculous, and it should have been 6! Which makes the USO2009 loss even more painful! (Fed should've won it, multiple times!)

Guess we'll settle for 5x straight HC slam record then!
