Federer, Hewitt String Hybrid

I was just wondering why Federer and Hewitt get their racquets strung with VS Gut in the mains and Luxilon BB in the crosses. I thought that you used a softer string " like VS Gut" in the crosses, and a more durable string "like BB or another poly" in the mains.

Could someone please answer this for me.

I think that they use this setup because they get the feel of the gut and they put the BB in the crosses because it keeps the stringbed from moving.

Pros don't have a tight budget like us, so durability is not an issue. If i had an unlimited budget i would use natural gut all the time.

Gut mains for playability. The crosses "tame" the power a touch and since they are solid core won't cut the gut as quickly. I know they switch every 7 & 9 but don't forget Pete breaking a fresh all gut job inside of a ball change.

Well since they are not on a budget, why dont they use an all VS Gut job then. Thats what im wondering.

What I am wondering, is why you think that everyone would use a full gut job if money was no object? The fact is that some players do not like way natural gut plays, just like some players don't like polys (or multifilaments, basic nylons, and so on). Most top players I can think of use the string they do because it works best for them, regardless of the cost. Whether its a $5 set of string or a $35 set of string, the top pros are going to use whichever they perform the best with. In some cases, that means a full gut job, in others it could mean a full poly job, or a hybrid, etc.
