Federer hinting at retirements at Swiss Sportd Awards

And should that be surprising?
The guy will turn 40 in August, he has more than 20 years of an extraordinary professional career, having won practically everything (the Olympic gold in singles is a thorn and a motivation at the same time for the Swiss), with a fully established family, with a complicated world situation that affects a sport like tennis, and public access to the stands will depend greatly on the implementation of vaccines in people; with his two main records about to be surpassed (in fact his record of more weeks as number 1 in the Open Era is already history: Djokovic will have that mark as of March 8, 2021), with more than three operations in the knee in recent years, it is absolutely normal that next season will be the last of Federer.
:D

It seem he's done once and for all :( But it would be good to see him again at Wimbledon for one last time. But then again he is 40, why just not retire and let others play. It's normal to retire at this age in sports and before.

It'll make discussing former pro players more toxic tho

That's their problem. Really, it's going to be funny and heartening seeing the exodus of people and posts from here to FPPT. I'm telling you, Fed retiring would be the best outcome for this part of the forum.

Could it be possible that he just isn’t in the mood to spend all the time in Australia with the quarantine and that’s why he talks about his "condition" now that it is announced? Because he also often said he was happy how well it all went.

So does he maybe prepare an excuse for not going to Australia? No matter what is true it would suck anyway though.

His reports on his knees have been a little less consistently positive than you suggest, but obviously adding quarantine and disrupted patterns on top is not advisable.

Damn I am going to be gutted when this actually hits - Just growing up watching these guys, a part of our lives will just end. On the positive side though, he has had such a successful career and seems to be in a very happy place in his personal life too.

I think for us fans of the sport, its more to do with how their end to their careers is in a way an end to a little part of our own.

The former pros section will always be better because of the demographics

The players and posters may change, but this forum will always be full of kids with NFI foaming over whoever is at the top of the rankings

The former pros section also has annoying posters but they tend to be fewer and annoying for different reasons

I wish Fed would play forever but of course it’s impossible, Fed was the man for so long, and is the remnant of a bygone era of tennis. Tennis won’t be the same without the Maestro, just imagine talking about Basilashvilli or Rublev everyday.

When it's time, I just hope he goes quietly without making a big song and dance about it. The sport of tennis has given him more than he could have imagined so he owes it to the sport.

That's why I'm really rooting for big names in the next generation. Fedalovic are already past their prime and I sure am getting tired of the same faces winning Slams. For tennis to really survive, we need new names even a fraction as compelling as Fedalovic have been.

I hope we get to see the day where Medvedev and Tsitsipas play a big tournament final on the same day as a Fedal charity exo, and all the talk is about Medvedev and Tsitsipas.

Sunny Ali's wish list taped on Roger's bathroom mirror:

1. Go quietly
2. No song and dance about retiring
3. I owe everything to tennis
4. Will leave no legacy except as placeholder for GOAT Rafa and co-GOAT Serb guy.

Great exit strategy!

LOL Beatles ... brilliant machan! :-D(y)

Truth be told, I'm grateful to the top-3 for the unparalleled entertainment they've provided over the years but we must never for a moment be under the illusion that the sport needs them. It's always the other way around.
