Federer is 8-3 in 5 Set matches after turning 35.

Arguably should've lost a couple too. So it evens out. The Kandy & Djoker losses hurt like hell. But I'm also thankful for the 2 escapes in AO finals.

Cilic should have been beaten in straights in 2018. Cilic was not close to getting a break in the first game of 5th but Fed would have easily broken him back

Kevin Anderson and Dmitrov are injury losses . Not even worth talking about

The 2017 AO was massive with a trio of 5 set wins. 2019 Wimbledon was horrendous. 2018 Wimbledon hurt massively too, but was offset by his 2018 AO title.

Overall, I'd say that Federer is ahead here. The 2017 AO laid the ground work for Fed's awesome 2017 season and early 2018 season.

The 2018 Wimbledon match against Kandy really has me scratching my head. He had won 30+ consecutive sets at Wimbledon before losing 3 straight to Kandy.

He had his opportunities but like the thread says, he was 35+

You can't expect to win them all at that age. It's sports, stuff happens.

The big 3 are so much higher in talent than the rest. So age for the most part applies only when they play each other or players zoning.

Kandy and Dmitrov were not getting wins if Fed was even remotely healthy

Then I really don't understand your point about "He should have won all of them." Basically you're just saying he should've beaten Novak at Wimbledon.

He was close to winning every one of them . The 8-3 figure is not a true depiction of how close he was to that.

But thought he was at his peak?
He's at his peak because his parents worked at a pharmaceutical company, Fed devotee.

He’s 8-3 prob Bc he’s starting to have to go the distance with MUGS. Used to be primarily top 5 type players, now he has to dig deep on his off days to beat Millman and Sandgren.

Anderson and Dmitrov losses don’t count for all practical purposes

This reminds me of some Nadal fans. Mind you, it's not a long leap from, "My favorite is the best even if someone else has won four more majors than him," to "My favorite is the morally unbeaten and unbeatable humble and modest goat who only ever loses if he's [insert long laundry list of excuses]."

As you said before, if he "should" have beaten Djokovic at Wimbledon, he "should" have lost to Sandgren last night.

I have discounted AO matches completely. Fed should have lost to Millman.

I basically ignore matches where one or the other player is injured - hence I dont pay much attention to the Kandy, Dmitrov, Sandgren and Millman matches.

If someone wins 15 of 1 major and 7 among the rest that is not the same as someone winning 7+ majors at 3 of them.

So far as I am concerned, you should go a lot further and discount all of the matches that the ATP count as loses for Federer.

If you are just look at stats and ATP results, there is no need for analysis. A 2nd grade student is all needed to do what is more and what is less.

Because he could rarely straightset journeymen anymore /thread
Pretty much. Typically guys like Tiafoe, Sandgren and 36-year old Youzhny have no business even being on the court with him. His 5-set wins at AO '17 and '18 over Rafa, Stan, Kei, and Cilic were incredibly impressive tho

Good point. But you don’t take your analysis far enough. You seem to have forgotten - or perhaps you never knew - a very important lesson that I have often repeated in these parts: if you get somewhere first, it is not enough for your followers to end up getting just slightly ahead. Rather, they have to more or less lap you. It really is that or bust. If someone wins a record 20 majors, their record stands until someone else wins at least 37 majors.

Project 26 or Bust.

That is what Fed, Usain Bolt, Phelps and legends did.

ESPN showed Fed with his physio and Luthi arriving to the AO facilities at 3:30 local time. He was slightly stiff legged while walking through the underground garage. He did not practice today and will not practice, according to P-Mac. He came to the facilities for "other obligations," either media or medical.

So 2 injury losses (Hand injury against Anderson and Back injury against Dimitrov) and the Wimbledon choke in the final last year.

Could've easily been 11-0 tbh
