Federer is going to play Istanbul Cup

So he got an offer he couldn't refuse?

He is trying to maximize his earnings before he retires. Since he has a lot of overhead expenses, he doesn't make enough prize money unless he makes it to the last couple of rounds of major tourneys, which he is isn't doing of late. So he needs other sources of income.

Fed loves the cash. Huge fee I reckon. Turkey desperate to assert itself on the global stage via sport.

Interesting to see if he drops 1 or 2 clay masters. Also expecting him to skip DC R1.

Not just Fed though, all the big 4 love a fee.

That should not be his motivation to keep playing. I thought he wants to win something big for the last time before he retires? Doing it like this is cutting down his chances.

He cannot do anything big when Nadal is playing. He tanks early to avoid facing him.

Why not? He wants to make money from his job, so he can guarantee a bright future for his family, children, grandchildren and etc.

The top athletes are all greedy and this is perfectly normal.

This is one week before Madrid.

What is he doing? I thought he was going to cut the schedule down for this season so he can go for the more important tournaments.. Now he is gonna play this tournament..

what the f... Or maybe he hasn't planned to play Monte Carlo? I'm confused.

It sais in the link he got a good offer to play.

The f**k is he doing
Overplaying cost him a decent Australian open and now he adds a clay court 250 to his schedule?

Yeah but with the money he already has he can spend them on purpose without giving a damn and his money will never disappear. I'm sure he has already secured his childrens future.

But you are right in a certain degree, no matter how much you have, you are never satisfied.

True, but when you start making money you know that you can always make more and it will never be enough. I know he is superrich and all, but if you look at the whole picture (apart from your opinion), you know he has a point.

That is one of the silliest posts of the year. There's no way ever would a player like Federer look at a tournament and think "I'll play that because I need the $ since I lost/might lose early at a major." He is beyond that sort of thinking by years.

With the amount of money he has he'd be making millions of dollars a year in interest and dividends alone without any doubt. If he doesn't he's got bad investment advice. Banks are paying 5% interest on accounts these days, so a smart investment client would expect even more.

He has set his sight on another RG title. Murray cannot play on clay, Nishikori's fitness will be lacking, Djokovic will beat Nadal in a tough QF or SF. So why not go for it!

This.

______________
and why not take advantage of that to discover this amazing city ? :)
(or maybe he already went there ?)

Seriously Roger, what the f*** are you doing? Boy do I get the feeling 2015 will be a year that resembles the disastrous 2013. You can see the pattern here, good 2014, played stupid exhos in IPTL instead of resting and training (like he did in 2012 with the South American ones). Now he adds a 250 on freakin clay, doing another exho at MSG next month as well ? If it'd be grass, I could see the reason, he's preparing for Wimbledon etc...but he hasn't been a factor on clay since 2011. Seriously Roger, I'm a huge fan, but get your priority straights man. If your objective is to lift another slam trophy, your little exhibitions might give you extra pocket change, which you probably don't need when your pulling in 50 millions a year, but that will mean little when you'll get slaughtered by Novak, Rafa, Stan or Andy during slams because you didn't prepare well enough.

Under different circumstances, my reaction would be "wtf?".

However, since I live in Istanbul, and have not seen him play before, my reaction is pretty much like OMGHOLYSHIT YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!1112!!!!

Lucky :) I wouldn't give a crap either if I was in your place :P

I don't think he really cares any more.

When he lost at the AO, he didn't seem to care much.

He just likes playing and has nothing to prove.
Those other dudes you mention (Nadal, Djokovic, Murray etc.) can prepare for slams all they like and work their a*ses off for the next several years, they will never touch Federer's career.

Odds are he'll play one 250 clay and 2 of the Clay Masters which is what he pretty much did the last few years. e.g.. Estoril, Madrid and Rome. He skipped Madrid last year and played MC (birth of kids), but he hasn't been playing MC for years.

he wants one more French open title before he retires by beating nadal and shutting up all doubters as to who is GOAT.

In his exclusive interview with Telegraph Sport, Federer highlights three key areas that have already carried him to five ATP titles and a tour-leading 68 wins this season. And the first insight, passed on to him by his new coach Stefan Edberg, turns out to be highly counterintuitive.

“Stefan wanted me more to play more matches and play tournaments more consistently,” said Federer, who is squeezing 17 events into 2014 – not to mention next month’s Davis Cup final – where the reigning No 1 Novak Djokovic settled for 15.

“I used to go in spells, but he doesn’t believe in taking too long of a break. He says it’s fine to do that when you’re younger, but when you’re older, maybe it’s easier for your body to keep on playing.

“We took a similar approach in training. Stefan reminded me to keep on playing points, whereas before I would only do that when the next tournament was close. I think it actually helped me to remain in a good rhythm. When you take a direction like that, you’ve got to stick with it and see if it works out

So happy for you :)

Must be a decision based on money, and I don't know if it's a good one. However, we'll never know until the season is over if this is going to be good or not for Fed.

So which mickey-mouse events will Rafa be entering to maximise his earnings before his next seven month hiatus :)

He will probably drop a clay Masters from his schedule.

Istanbul offers a better chance for Fed to win a title than a clay masters would (where he has almost no chance and is now exempt from having to play) and the Istanbul appearance fee is likely worth more than what he could make with even a deep clay masters run.

Exactly.
A wise move I reckon.
If he decides not to win things any more, then stacking cash is a good idea.

Haha, lucky bugger! I hear he is coming to Auckland next year too...

Well, it may help Roger get some more Clay matches under his belt, where he has a better chance of not getting upset, rather than playing at MC. Although he has a final appearance to defend there so......

hahahaha he thinks higher of his clay chances with his bigger sweetspot 97 than we thought!
to outdo Edbergs RG final and go all the way with serve volley and 33 candles of experience

Go delusional Roger!! however I do support you.

He could get lucky and Soderling might come back for RG
th

but I think Sod was only talking about his cheering duties for Sweden

Fed did say somewhere that what Edberg told him it was more match play, not less, that would kep him in form. I believe Edberg has a point here. Imagine Fed cut down his regular tourney and off stage for months. I doubt he would find his top form that easily.

Why not try to grow the game in a new market, help a tourney cement its legacy right from the start, get some clay practice in before RG and cash a few Swiss francs while you're at it???

i agree this is why. not for the $$

What is the big deal if Fed plays Istanbul ?
The real contenders there are Stan and the (rusty peak injured etc) bull.
Are they playing or not ?

I don't think he ever played in Istanbul before and I well understand why he wants to now, being at the tail end of his career. Amazing city btw, one of my favourites!
I don't believe for a minute that 'overplaying' cost him a decent AO, and he and his team are fully capable of judging about which tournaments to play and which to skipp.
At least this is a regular tournament and not some idiotic exho.

Of course he'll get some nice payment as well. Which one of you would refuse the offer? ;)

Didn't he say earlier this year that he didn't really care about winning slams anymore? He said he now wants to win more titles.

Yes he played a lot last year, and it was a relatively good year for him.
