Federer is now looking to steamroll to a 5th AO title...

With the knowledge that Nadal is out of the tournament, I reckon this will give Roger a mental edge going into his semi against Djokovic, knowing that the only players left standing in his way to a 17th Slam win are players he's comfortable with.

Sure, Djokovic beat Fed at the USO last year in the semis... BUT, main difference here being Federer knows BEFORE this match that his path is clear (no Nadal), this should give him a clear mind and allow himself to play freely without lingering doubts in the back of his mind. I think this is a good sign.

Also Murray didn't play spectacularly in his quarter... so Murray in the final isn't a foregone conclusion. If he is, Federer will take him out as he'll be in Finals mode most likely (which basically means ... you know what ;) )

Federer seems to play his best tennis at the very end of a slam.. and here we are, *without* his arch rival standing in his way to a 5th AO victory. His chances look good. Djokovic could beat Fed, not saying he can't, but Federer must be liking his position right now.

The other way of looking at it is that Federer has lost his chance to beat Nadal when he is in somewhat better form.

Federer does say after all that he enjoys the challenge of playing Nadal.

Fed did this to Nadal last year too.

I'm a huge Fed supporter btw.

I hope he wins it, but I would not mind one bit if Murray won it.

Hardcore PS3 players need this.

You guys not giving Djoker a chance after he won their last slam meeting =(, and what if he makes it and Murray manages to actually keep a cool head.

Federer won't win the AO. Guaranteed. He will either lose to Djokovic or Murray. Murray has probably taken enough beatings from Federer. He will find a way to win this time.

You forgot about the drubbing that Djokovic received from Fed the last time they played a few months ago. 6-1, 6-4 is total domination.

yes.. I felt Roger had a good chance at the moment. I've seen the match at the year's end and I felt Roger was really comfortable there, ripping the ball. If he finds his best form, I had the feeling he would do it, because Rafa wasn't playing great.. Not serving like he did at the US Open, and not getting his balls deep enough. Even against Cilic, there were a lot of balls Fed would have ripped if he was at his best. However, Rafa ups his gears in the second week as well usually..

Anyway, Fed is favourite to win now, but knows there's still work to do.

Would be incredible to win a third major for the fifth time.

Guaranteed? Your sure djokovic won't suffer some virus, or Murray won't 'run out of steam' after a fivesetter two days before? etc.

How can you be so sure about something in the future?

Difference is Fed was old last year in tennis terms, and Nadal is in his prime. Fed never pulled a stunt like this in his prime.

You are correct. I am a *******, but for some reason I just dont think he will win this tournament. I dont see why Andy Murray will lose a major to Federer for the 3rd straight time.

If Roger finds his best form, the only thing that can touch him, is Ralph on clay.
Nobody else, nowhere else.

I don't see why Murray would lose in straights, but I think both at their best, Federer still is the superior hardcourtplayer, because of his way better forehand and second serve.

Quoted for truth. This pretty much shows AO09 was won by Rafa because of Fed injuries, but at least Fed made it to the finals and took him to 5 sets. We see what happens to Rafa when he gets an apparent "injury"

Uhmm.. that's tough, because Rafa has a way of not letting Roger find his best (for very long) though, I agree Roger's level is higher, especially on hard. Grass could be close with Rafa's best though, especially present day.. Think given that Fed is 29 I'd give that to Nadal.

federer was not injured in the 09 australian open, he lost fair and square, nadal was mentally tougher

Fed will get a huge lift knowing that Nadal is out, especially after Nadal just beat him in 2 comfortable tie breakers in the Abu Dhabi final on hard courts. However I think Joker is looking a little better than Federer at the moment.

LMAO...you're joking, surely...Federer's peak on grass ended @ W 2006. Unfortunately for the other players he was that far ahead that even in his decline he was destroying everyone.

2008 grass Federer= 60% of 2006 grass Federer...and Ralph barely made it out of that match...

Federer was never really beaten by anyone. He was either taken down by illness or factors out of his control, such as bad light & super Saturday! LOL!

You could write a book about Rafa & Federer's worthless sportsmanship! I doubt it would sell though!

And by the way Nadal won 1/4 million bux in the winner take all Abu dhabi event when he beat Federer there on hard courts and Federer was fully fit.

Did you watch that match? Fed wasn't even trying and it went to two tiebreakers. Fed would have destroyed Nadal in this year's AO, if Nadal was good enough to make it past Ferrer. But alas he wasn't.

Lol. Federer probably got paid that much just to show up.

quite possibly but Nadal would have got a bigger appearance Fee as world #1. He probably made a million bux all up for turning up and straight setting Fed in the final.

Are they in a hurry to finish the tournament Fed has to play both of them the same time? Ferrer is umpiring?

Anyways, I doubt Fed will be steamroling. Maybe Muzza will finally break through, that has been a long time coming.
