Federer is out of Toronto

Roger Federer

I have made the tough decision to withdraw from the Rogers Cup. Toronto is one of my favorite events on the calendar and I am disappointed that I won’t be able to compete in front of the great tennis fans in Canada. Looking ahead, it is best for me that I take more time after Wimbledon. I look forward to coming back to Canada next year and I wish Karl Hale and everyone at Tennis Canada a very successful tournament.

I like it...screw these useless slow court events. Although apparently Rio is the same speed as london. Well, as they say, we will always have the Real Slam.
Isn't Toronto at least marginally faster than Montreal. I'm kind of disappointed. And it looks like this thing is being handed to Djok on a silver platter. Unless he's still off.

It looks like Federer is still keen to promote tennis globally, fulfilling his mission to support the game even at his own expense.

It is good to see that he at least has his scheduling dialed as usual.

With all these (and impending) withdrawals... may as well cancel the event and hand Novak his trophy, a la 2012.

pretty easy no brainer...Buy something nice with the money instead of watching Djokovic beating Raonic 3 and 3 in the final.
If Novak is playing I'd probably keep probably keep them but who knows whether or not he'll be on the withdrawal train now.... Rafa I'm expecting to pull out any day.

Unless Nadal has not "recovered" (meaning unless his team decides to continue with the comedy) he will be playing (especially if Djokovic withdraws).

He will be looking for any mental boost going into the summer HC season and since he is not getting it at Cincy and probably at the Olympics, he might as well try his luck in Canada.

Guessing not fully fit.

Will be very at the US Open if he plays a lot matches in Rio then Cincy.

Considering he has barely been healthy all year (played a few tournaments hurt), pretty crazy he is 9th in the race. Did well in the 2 slams he played.

Fed gets tired after playing matches against Pella, Marcus Willis, Dan Evans and Stevie Johnson ?

Guess grandpa is really showing 35 now !

Any news on Fed and injury post Wimbledon? Just a scare or has there been any more news on it?
He stubbed his toe and went down. Complete non story. For the rest of his career the tennis press will exaggerate every little thing.

Good move by Fed.

Tennis Canada needs to speed the courts up. Not for Fed; for Raonic.

Then why was he face down on the grass for a while, kicking the turf. Also called for a trainer to examine the knee.

I would sell your tickets right now before Djokovic or Nadal withdraw cause if they do no-one will buy them from you.

The guy has barely played this year. If he gets tired from playing 2 tournaments then he might as well retire because it's not gonna get any easier.

I'm seriously thinking about it. Only problem is that I have a friend from out of town who is coming for the tournament. We literally planned this 6 months ago the day tickets were available, and bought the weekend package that has a QF and SF session as well as the final.

Figured it was our last chance to see Fedalovic in their golden era.

So glad I saw Fed twice live at the ROgers Cup in 2014 in Toronto. If I never saw him play live this news would suuuuuuuuuuuuuck!

I wouldn't know what ? That playing 4 mugs for a 7 time champion can cause tiredness for a 35 year old ?

Mugs?

Now you start to sound like our local jester 60ies.

The truth is that Federer has trouble getting his preparation right for his planned schdule for a variety of reasons which are beyond his power to control.

An OP, low match count, back problems can cause a lot of damage to an already complicated situation with competing on tour at his age.

Show more respect and don't talk out of your derriere, if you want to be taken seriously.

I fully realize he is in bad shape and that is exactly what I was pointing out. If playing 4 rounds, 3 of whom did not have a grass win this year is causing him to tire out , having played only 6 events all year, then he is far from fitness.

'Age is catching up' was the essence of that post.

No, it was not.

It was disrespectful, otherwise you would have included the names of a few more players (and eventually discussed what really happened for Federer to eventually come to such decision) in order to somewhat accurately represent the context around the whole thing.

A knee-jerk reaction or a jerk reaction?

That is the question.

Hopefully, will get to see Federer in 2018 in Toronto. lol 125 for Bronze tickets....2010 (40), 2014(75). Maybe with them gone...the tickets will get cheaper.

Montreal....next year...nah....pain in the ass since my Canadian French is non-existant.

Nadal skipping out sucks....Wanted to see him before he retires.

Will maybe plan a trip to New York...hopefully to catch Fedal.

Disrespect to Fed or the players he faced ?

Fed's comment ' Looking ahead, it is best for me that I take more time after Wimbledon.' caught my attention.

Federer could not have expected a more easier run to the QF EVER at a major. Though we have to concede the fact that he had 2 5 setters thereafter, but they were not clay or HC that could be tough on your body . The matches were 3 hrs.

I am not questioning Fed or suggesting he should be more fit.

All what was intended was that he is at last showing his age.

Apart from repeating like mad that Federer is at advanced for a tennis player age, there is nothing remotedly sincere or respectful in what you are saying.

For approximately 4 weeks Federer played 10 matches.

Given his general lack of match practice that is A LOT of tennis (unrelated to his age as any player without match practice struggles to play on the highest level in tennis from the get go after a long hiatus) and you repeating that the matches were "just" 3 hours only show that you don't understand that time spent on court is not indicative of the played time or the intensity, whith which it is played (FYI, the final, which went to 2 TB was just under 2 hours in comparison with both Federer's matches that went over 3 hours each).

I thought most guys would use Toronto to warm up for Rio, then skip Cincy for a break. Too bad for Toronto, they got decimated by the Olympics four years ago, although the timing of everything was a little bit different.

no way is Federer missing cincinatti..in Olympic year if anything was going to be dropped it was Toronto.

think about all the tennis upcoming..toronto, OG singles/dubz/mixdubz, cincy, usopen. not even tomic the tank engine could play all that.

The cynical side in you is thinking it is disrespectful , whereas I was only pointing out the obvious that Federer's body is not holding up. No need to sweat.
