Federer is the best not because he wins but because he put on a show.

Like in Gladiator (2000 film) it's about showmanship. Win the crowd and you cement your legacy.

A retrospect:

US Open has only had 1 man defend the title in the last 20 years, Federer who won 5 in a row. He also provided the last great match in a final with his 2009 loss to del Potro although the 2012 final between Murray and Novak was of high drama as well. He also had great pre-final matches in 2010, 2011 and 2004.

Arguably 3 greatest matches for a Wimbledon Final have all been Federer against 3 different opponents, if you prefer 1980 final it still means the 3 greatest finals of the last 40 years. He is Wimbledon at this point.

The AO in terms of absolute quality has to be the 2012 final between Djokovic and Nadal however Federer provided great drama in 2017 and a 5 setter in 2018 along with great matches in 05, 09 and 13.

Even at the French where great matches in later stages have been hard to come by, arguably 1 of the best finals in recent memory has been 2011 with 3 tight sets Federer just let 2 slip away falling away in the 4th.

Meanwhile in secondary tournaments, Federer has numerous memorables such as 2018 IW, 2005 Miami, 2005 WTF, 2004 WTF (tiebreak for ages), 2018 Paris, etc.

There is no way one could objectively say any player has had more memorable, final set, drama filled matches in later stages as Roger Federer since Bjorn Borg or Jimmy Connors.

Sampras is a superior player than Federer. He has more YE #1.

YE #1 is the Ultimate GOAT criterion. Ergo Sampras = GOAT.
You weren’t even 5 when Sampras was on his peak. I doubt you ever watched 10 entire matches from Pistol Pete.

Federer has the most watchable game whereas Nadal looks good mainly on the highlights reel due to his running forehands and the like. Djokovic looks good doing the splits during baseline shots.

Muhammad Ali's greatness certainly supersedes any amount of title defenses. Who cares how many Klitschko has? Most don't care. Ali did more – he defied time and the laws of gravity in that ring. Tantalized the public imagination like no one else. Floated like a butterfly. And for that, he is remembered, more than anyone else. That is greatness in the real world.

Federer has his share of that for tennis. Borg too. They are transcendent figures. Icons. That far supersedes the petty crumbs fought for in forum goat wars.

Federer is the most pleasant to watch but I think Nadal has been involved in more epic matches due to his incredible defense
