That Wimbledon (2009) was the best I’ve ever seen Karlovic play! Fed had 2 BP chances and he took them, I thought it was quite a ‘clean’ performance from the Swiss Maestro back then...now looking at the stats; 31/5 W/UFE and 42 unreturnables on serves vs 49 for Karlovic, that’s pretty good.

Comments :

1. Karlovic had come into this match hitting 135 aces in 4 matches at Wimbledon, including 47 aces in 4 sets vs Tsonga and 36 aces in 4 sets vs Verdasco.
He was unbroken on grass as well in 2009 coming to the match ( 8 matches)

2. Federer played 2 great return games to break : one of them early in the 1st set and one of them late in the 2nd set.
No other games with BPs, though he did have a game with 0-30 at the start of the 3rd set.

3. Federer was too solid in his service games. No BP chance for Karlovic.

4. Karlovic's unreturned serve% in this match (>60%) is pretty high.
Wonder how much it was in the Tsonga match in 3R. He served at 78% (!!) (102/130), had 47 aces in that match.

5. The early break by Federer set the tone for the match. Made Karlovic a tad nervous, that showed in the rallies. Karlovic was rock solid on serve though.

6. I don't think Fed was going full throttle for aces/service winners/unreturned serves. Else would've had a higher% of unreturned serves. Some of them, he was going for the serve+fh combo. The Federer-Soderling match in 4R was also a servefest. Would be interesting to see the unreturned serves % for that match as well.

yeah, a pretty clean performance and 2 great return games to break.

Intersting that Fed would only serve and volley 5 times on a fast surface vs a guy with as poor a return as Karlovic.

He was an aggressive baseliner at this point in time.

Plus given the massive advantage he had over Karlovic from the baseline , it makes sense. Rather than risk giving Karlovic a shot at connecting 2-3 returns in a row and passing him, he preferred to stay back.

The one vs Roddick is more surprising. He SnVed only 4 times in that match:

I guess I find the Karlovic stat more surprising since Karlovic was serve and volleying on both serves throughout while Roddick was staying back. Did Karlovic attempt to come in off Feds serve at all? I know we are comparing very different eras, and Fed is of course a rare talent, but this sort of stat would be mind boggling in the 80s or 90s. Playing a serve and volleyer and staying back on almost every serve. And still winning in straight sets. It would be almost impossible for anyone not named Agassi.

Karlovic wasn't coming in that much on the return.

As you can see above, 54 of the 64 net points were SnV points for Karlovic.

--------------

Federer came in quite a bit in the next match vs Haas to take the net away from Haas.
