Federer: Madrid Was Start Of Something BIG

Federer's forehand was as good as ive seen it at Madrid. This is the same guy who came out with fire against Nadal. If Roger takes his "Its me vs. the World" mentality he could win the next 6 slams. This is the federer everyone wants to see. One who plays with fire but also with the upmost of class. And that is one dangerous player. I wouldnt be surprised if Federer takes Roland Garros in epic fashion.

Anything can happen in a sport.. so i won't make conclusion based on Federer's victory in Madrid.... Yes, he has a chance of winning in RG but players like Nadal and Djokovic are equally good as well.

Well, there we have Mr. Conquistador again and his key word "class".

I think even Roger himself said his victory in Madrid should not be overrated in light of the upcoming FO. He learned his lesson because after Hamburg 2007 he though he was going to win the FO and look what happened...

What does epic fashion mean? Like, two back to back thrilling five setters vs Djoker and Nadal which stretch for 5 hours each? Or epic as in he straight sets everyone and hands Nadal a breadstick and Djoker a bagel?

To be honest, either way, I would be extremely surprised. The second scenario is... just unrealistic, given how good Djokovic and Nadal are, and how good their current forms are. The first option is to be honest just as unlikely because if Fed does beat Djoker in a thriller, he'll be tired, like Nadal was in AO final. The thing is, Nadal's mental toughness > Fed's, so if Fed is tired in the final, I doubt he'll stand, especially as he's likely to be up against Nadal. And anyway, even if Fed gets into the final with a full tank, I still find it unlikely he'll beat Nadal. Push Nadal to 4 or 5 and make it tough? Possible. Actually beat Nadal? Highly unlikely.

Please be realistic.

Can people stop overrating Djoker? Frig Federer is at the least as good as him on clay at the moment.

The op is very delusional. Fed has no chance to win RG. Even crazier to say he will win the next 6 slams.

No chance at RG? Why would you say that? You clearly saw that Federer can compete with Djokovic (even got a set and break in the 2nd at Monte Carlo) and of course we all know what Federer did to Nadal at Madrid.

No need for high altitude, Nadal tired excuses a Madrid. It was clay and Federer beat him on that surface.

I think in epic fashion he meant that Federer will sport a new man purse, a new clay repelling cardigan and special pants that can be worn in any direction.

Bravo. I like this one.

I wish people would look at this measurably. Federer has a chance, better than any other player besides Nadal. I'd say his chances of winning are roughly 20-25% if he makes it to the final.

Not all clay is equal. There are wide varieties of clay feels. Nadal prefers Monte-Carlo and Roland Garros clay over everything else. Fed has yet to beat Nadal in either place.

So should Fed fans disregard Nadal's win at the Australian Open since he prefers a faster hard court like the US Open?

He has a shot, but it's a long shot.. People who are saying it's going to happen for sure, are dillusional, just like the ones that say he has no chance.

The title of the thread should be changed, cause it's like Federer said it this way.

It's a completely different speed so I would say yes. Much harder for Nadal at the US Open. Same goes for much harder for Federer at RG compared to Madrid.

Hope Fed does not get over confident with the Madrid win, and take it easy.

Its going to be very very tough for him to even make a match out of final with Rafa.

Djok in the semis? If Tsonga is sort of fit, not injured, Joker *could* go out right there itself.

However, if Federer can keep the UE's and shanks low, get a decent first serve %, a bunch of aces, and not choke up BP's anything's possible.

Regarding the thread title, i sure hope it is the start of a resurgence!

He is 0-4 against Nadal at the French. Even if he beats Djokovic how is he going to beat Nadal.

I think Fed can beat Djoker. I think he can push Nadal, harder than in 2007 and definitely do a better job than that pathetic display last year. But can he beat Nadal? I really doubt it.

He has broken Nadal's clay streaks TWICE. Nadal has broken Federer's grass and hardcourt streaks as well. These two bring out the best out of each other. Thats the specialty of the rivalry.

Sadly I disagree. His forehand, even in the Madrid final, was still a 50-50 shot. He's still shanking a lot, and it looks like he just can't keep consistency on it.

With great winners came horrible unforced errors.

um...nadal does not bring out the best in federer. Unless you think that shanking bhs into the net is the best.

I agree. He's still inconsistent and the fh is no where near its best. He did shank quite a few forehands so hopefully he works on that.

Oh ya snapping Nadal's record clay court streak was nothing. Nadal is the heavy favorite but Federer has a very possible chance of ending Nadal's run.

That's true. Although Nadal, usually wins the matches and I don't think it will be any different at RG. Roger has yet to win a best of 5 sets against Rafa on clay.

True, though Federer did take Rafa to 5 sets on clay. And thats all I ask for (big ask) from Federer this time. If he can take Rafa to 5 sets in the final...I will be content and fancy his chances. If you asked Federer if he could have a one set take all vs Nadal at the French he would take that in a heartbeat I think...knowing he would be one set away from a career Slam.

never said it was nothing, but generally nadal does not bring out the best in federer imo.

Well ya I guess you're right on that. Perhaps I worded it wrong. Instead of bring the best out of each other...they do definitely end others' runs :D.

In a fifth set I would still favor Nadal. Nadal is 3-2 vs Federer in matches that went to a fifth set. Roger's 5 set record isn't all that great. If he's going to have any chance of beating Nadal he's got get it done in 4 sets or less.

How is my logic flawed? I fully admitted that Federer wouldn't win a fifth set against Nadal on clay.

Nadal is undefeated on clay in a 5 set match. The only 2 players who have come close are Federer and Coria. Federer is still active, playing, and doing fairly well. He has the best shot out of anyone to beating Nadal.

This is sports, people. Anything can happen.

And how many times does it turn out not at all the way we expected?

I predict the Federer-Djokovic semifinal will be a hard battle. 4 or 5 sets either way. The winner will have nothing left for Nadal who will cruise to an easy 3 set win in the final.

Yep, in my opinion the best I've ever seen him hit his forehand against Nadal in a best of 5 clay match was the 2006 Rome final, and then he shanked it on both of his match points. His forehand just hasn't been there for at least a year in my opinion.

You never know though, he might just pull a rabbit out of the hat.

Well I wouldn't go that far Conquistador. Yes Fed played exceptionnally well vs Nadal. His Forehand and Backhand were some of the best shots I've seen in a long time, he served exceptionnally well when it mattered, he executed his dropshots with a thing of beauty and he was perfect on BP conversions vs Nadal.

But remember this : Fed in the zone vs Nadal not being close to 100% and it was 6-4 6-4 (which shows even Nadal when fatigued cannot go that down easily and he should of came back in the second set when he had multiple BP opportunities)

However if Nadal is feeling more than 80% vs Fed in the zone, I can't say the same thing will happen.

It's a great boost for Fed that win in Madrid no doubt about it but he should be prepared for the biggest challenge of his life in RG.
