Nalbandian def. Federer 1-6,6-3,6-3
I know neither of these two are retired, but most of the stats are here, so I’m posting it here.
Federer had come into the finals not losing serve even once. Nalbandian hadn’t done much all year long, but in this event had defeated nadal and djokovic back to back coming into the finals.
First set was total dominance from an in-form fed vs a sub-par nalbandian. However nalbandian raised his level in the 2nd set and earned an early break and kept holding against a federer who played well apart from the game to get broken to take the set 6-3. The third set, federer grew sloppier and allowed a consistent and impressive nalbandian to wrest the initiative and take the match by winning it 6-3 in the 3rd . Good match, but not a high quality one. I'd say their match at paris , the very next master series was clearly the better one .
These are the stats:
10 of the 24 UEs from nalby came in the first set and 15 of 35 UEs from federer came in the third set.
Federer had 2 return winners, both from the FH side. He had 1 passing shot winner from the FH side and 2 from the BH side ( including a sliced one in the 3rd set ). He had one lob winner of the FH wing.
Nalbandian had 2 return winners, one from each wing.He had no passing shot winners.
Almost at the end, the scorers had federer making 19 UEs from the FH wing, I had him at 16. He didn’t commit any more unforced errors of that wing after that
