If Federer defeats Wawrinka, he will have 70 match wins at every slam.

Current # of slam wins at each slam:

Australian Open: 97
Roland Garros: 69
Wimbledon: 95
U.S. Open: 82

For a while, he was the only one with 60+ match wins at each of the slams until Djoko did it. Connors would have almost certainly been on had he played AO and been allowed at RG. FEDERER would be the first with 70+ at each. What’s interesting is that he had zero wins at RG in 2002 (ranked 8th in the world, lost in first round), 2003 (ranked 5th in the world, lost in the first round), and skipped it and/or injured in 2016, 2017, 2018. Had he made even the 4th round in each of those 5 years, he’d be at 80+ at all the slams.

Needless to say, he’s the only one with 90+ at two slams, 80+ at three slams, 70+ at three slams. SFs thisnyear at Wimbledon and a 4th round next year the AO and he’s at 100 wins in two different slams.

Djokovic:

AO: 68
RG: 65
Wimbledon: 65
USO: 62

Nadal:

AO: 61
RG: 90
Wimbledon: 48
U.S. Open: 53

Federer vs. Wawrinka

Was watching some of that 2015 match and it was probably the most unusual match between these two vis a vis their “usual” match patterns.

I have never seen Fed have so much trouble reading Stan’s serve as Fed did that day. From 2003 to 2019, Federer has played 357 slam matches and his 12.0% points won against 1st serve in that RG 2015 match vs. Stan is the second lowest (Soderling, 2009 Wimbledon, 9.1%) % he won during this run vs. ANYONE. It was a truly dominant win for Stan, but it was definitely an outlier. The next least % of points won against 1st serve vs. Stan for Fed was 19.1% and for his career, Federer has won 31.9% of 1st serve return points vs. Stan.

This version of Stan isn’t moving as well. If there’s no rain, I think Federer will move Stan enough to prevent too much rhythm for Wawa and take his time away like he always does. This court is taking the slice decently well and Fed is taking the ball early enough on true enough bounces to take away Stan’s time.

If there IS rain and a soggy court, Stan will get a chance to bash away, kind of like what Soderling did in 2010 on a damp court. A damp court may help Fed vs. Rafa, but against Stan, he’ll want conditions nice and fast to move him around since Stan can’t get the ball up on Fed’s BH anyway.

I think Fed wins, but he’s also a few months shy of 38 and could have a bad day anytime and get into a protracted match in which his level declines after the 2nd set.

idk if this has been mentioned but Fedr broke the slam slump he was in (last two he lost in R4). And he did it at RG, where nobody had hopes for him. This old man is not finished. SF would be cool but really from here on the focus should be Wimbledon.

I still have hopes that Fedr wins RG19 without playing Djokodal, to see if the servers will crash. :happydevil:

Three times he's been just 2 sets away from the calendar slam, smh
I've been following Fed assiduously since 2000, no "smh" is necessary and has nothing to do with my post. I long ago figured out he's been 2 sets away three times from the CYGS.

Great interview. Love how Fed mentions how far back the opponents are standing. If he gets through Stan, I sure hope he exposes Rafa's ROS position. During IW, Sampras said that "the way to possibly challenge Rafa on clay is to serve and volley because he's standing practically in the stands."

Excellent find @BeatlesFan! I saw a short clip on twitter with just the intro part where Rog joked about being on Eurosport, but couldn't find the whole interview.

Change of racquet and SV strategy could have been employed way back in 2011. What was there to lose trying something new when he was losing to Nadal anyways.

McEnroe has been saying this since 2009. He has constantly decried the fact that Fed doesn't utterly change his style against Nadal on clay. Fed's greatest match ever on clay against Nadal was 2006 Rome where he relentlessly attacked the net, with great success. Of course, he was 24 years old then with tremendous speed and agility. But 33 year old Rafa isn't the player he used to be either. I just hope if they do meet in the semis, Roger doesn't stupidly try to get into endless baseline rallies. That's never worked against Rafa and it won't on Friday if the match happens.

Stubbornerer. Definitely agree on not wanting another "no contest"/clay match between them.

Fed entered 2 MS events on clay and RG. Reached QF in all 3. It's probably fair to say that he's still at least top 8 on clay in view of these results.

Which I didn't really expect coming into Madrid. Should be no pressure for him in the remaining matches, no matter what happens. Let's see where it can take him. SF certainly not impossible given where things stand.

He is tired.

of your shenanigans in this thread. Go away.
This is just a note to you my friend s/he is as annoying a poster as I've ever met. No one ever responds to he/she/it and those that do respond make comments such as you did which ellicit absolutely no response, proving that trolladamus' only reason for being here is to be constantly irritating and post meaningless drivel. Put he/she/it on ignore, you'll miss nothing.

Federer’s been doing this very thing all clay season and has been very successful at it. If players adjust and move up in court positioning, they’ll have a harder time returning serve. Win win for Federer.

If Fred wins RG then Ljubicic should get into the hall of fame.

Because if he does it serving and volleying with kick serves and ending points quickly agaisnt Rafa and Novak it's going to be something else.

Way more difficult than hitting through a fast court. There's nothing for him to counterpunch and absorb on clay like you can hard or grass.

And he can't simply ace his way out of trouble on clay unless he hits the tape perfectly everytime.

I said in 2016 Monte Carlo that even despite coming off knee surgery and playing less than 100% that Fred was playing some of the most aggressive and efficient clay tennis under Ljubicic that I'd never seen from even Anacone or Edberg. Under Edberg he was trying to serve and volley on first flat serves like other surfaces and was getting punished. Under Ljube he's been hitting kick serve and volley on first and second serve and it's been paying dividends.

Peak Fred 04-07 wasn't serving as dominantly and used the forehand to bail him out constantly.

I love this! Stefanos is a great kid... I don't mind him beating anyone (except Fedr)
Adorable kid, thanks for posting. I'm liking him more and more.

I don't like when he trolls Fedr (re: favorable treatment for superstars' 'line calls' by throwing Fedr's name out there to make his point, when Fedr is about the fairest player out there), but.... that interview plus this one below shows he genuinely idolizes The Old Man. Agree with you guys. He's gaining brownie points! ;)

Those are some pretty big "ifs."

It's one thing to make Chatrier look like SW19 when you're playing guys ranked in the 60s. In order to win the title, he'll have to go through the 2 best returners on tour. And they'll be damned if they're going to let Fed S&V them to death on clay of all places. Novak shuts that strategy down completely, even on grass. And especially Rafa on clay, who voluntarily lives 100 ft back and will unload on those kickers after they've started coming down, he won't get eaten up by them by standing close and trying to hit them at shoulder height.

Even Thiem in Madrid was wising up to it by the end of the match and started passing him on some big points from what I remember. There's a reason players don't S&V on clay.
