The fundamental question is, will Roger be as effective as I was while using him on Top Spin 4 vs Nadal simulation at Roland Garros? And he will be, even more so? But until I see it happening, it's going to be hard to verify that I think he'll be more effective. Let it be known that the Lupertazzi family is fully behind the grandmaster here.

Here's a photo of Roger practicing today, his practice partner was left handed Martin Klizan. I don't know much about Klizan's game, does he hit with excessive topspin?

He also practiced today with Corentin Moutet, know nothing about him either.

Historically, historical changes have come from war.

SFs seem an impossible task, but a supreme underdog menatality might help. Last time we saw that at a slam was entering the 2011 SFs at RG against Djokovic. Obviously the mechanics of the match up are different and Federer is basically 38 years old, but I feel that some things might break his way. I expect him to lose, but I also think he thinks that some of the dynamics that have allowed him to win 5 straight vs. Nadal May translate to clay, especially if the ball isnt jumping up on him on his BH on a damp court.

1) Yes, it’s clay and not hard court, but there are reasons for why Federer has not only beaten Nadal 5 straight times, but dominated him, especially the last three matches.

Dominance ratio last 5 matches vs. Nadal

2.25, Shanghai
1.46, Miami
1.74, Indian Wells
1.15, Australian Open
1.19, Basel

In these 5 matches, Federer has served 70 games and lost serve just 5 times.

2) How has he done it?

A) The bigger racket has helped him keep rallies in neutral or plus situations in BH exchanges with Nadal, something that rarely happend with the smaller racket. Lots of articles written on this and can be seen even in just small highlight packages.

B) The mentality to stay on the baseline no matter what and take the BH early that has given him opportunities to attack in rallies, especially the CC BH taken early, CC FH reply, FH to the deuce court, approach NET combination

C) Attacking the Nadal FH given the chance. Djokovic showed the way to do this (obviously easier for him given his BH in rally dynamics), but Federer throughout his career has shied away from going after the Nadal FH and concentrated on breaking down the Nadal BH, thereby leaving so many opportunities on the table. In this 5 match win streak, he has gone after the Nadal FH when given the chance and has parlayed those exchanges into very positive results with either i) winners, ii) drawn errors, iii) oppoetunities to close at net, or iv) upper hand in rallies.

D) Consistently attacking the Nadal BH return, especially on the deuce court. Go see how many times he’s taken advantage of Nadal’s weakest return and Nadal’s return position by using serve and volley.

Mission impossible, but I think that HE THINKS he has a chance and he does. Whatever happens, a soon to be 38 year old making this run and making it look easy just adds to his GOAT legacy.
How is dominance ratio determined?

So you are to blame ha.

Actually I didn't buy the shirt on the website. I just tried to order the brown one in it but it was out of stock. Then I went to a Uniqlo store in France and they only had the white one in my size so I took it. I even took the shorts (the brown version).

Might sound strange, but so am confident for Federer on Friday.

He has a 0 - 5 losing record to Rafa here, but all those matches were a million years ago now, and I feel like Roger has a "do or die" attitude now, compared with back then when he was comfortable rallying from the back.

I also think Roger has the mental edge in that few people would consider him the favourite, and Rafa has a lot more pressure. Rafa isn't in the same form as 2017 or 2018, or back in his heyday.

Also the weather is a question mark. Don't know who this favours, but it's another element of unpredictability that seems to suggest that an upset could be very possible. Or at the least a very close and entertaining match.

The one Chance Fed got to settle things on clay against Nadal. And he plays so carelessly. If Fed was a little bit more sharp he could have won this match.

Good season so far. But the more important thing was this win over Nadal because that would ensure his slam count is safe. If Nadal gets to the another GS title it’s going to be pressure on Fed to snag one more.

Very disappointed at how Roger played the important points in the QF and SF, experiment or not. It may not matter whether its grass or HC if he keeps playing that way. Its been a trend since the IW2018 finals.

Calm down.

He reallt wasn't playing carelessly.

He would have played with more freedom and attacking had the wind not been going 25mph for a good.majority of the match.

There is no reason to be glum or disappointed. Roger came into the FO with no expectations. I didn't even expect him to make it past the 4th round - but he made it all the way to the SF and it took the undisputed King of Clay to stop him.

The man is almost 38 years old, hasn't played clay in years AND MADE IT TO THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE CLAY GRAND SLAM!

Federer is amazing.

Well Done Maestro, Well Done.

Elaborate on this? Didn’t really see a path for winning this from the getgo as his serve wasn’t anywhere near good enough to win him enough points and the wind made it difficult to place any serves.

Nothing to add, great post.

And for additional perspective, check out the article from 2010, predicting Roger's retirement then:

He gave us many great years after that, and hopefully, he's got a few more years to go!

Are any of you really disappointed or depressed about today's outcome? This is one of the easiest-ever Fed losses for me to digest. He played some brilliant and innovative tennis in Madrid and Rome, as well as getting through beast Stan in BO5. Can't wait for Halle. I'm sure all the clay practice grooved his groundstrokes and he will be imperious at Wimbledon. At least let's hope so!

I am only slightly disappointed because I feel if the conditions were more neutral (10mph wind instead of 25 and not damp) that Rog had a good gameplan today like in 2011 and had a chance to use it. Not saying he would have won but I would have liked to see him not have to play for safety with the wind causing havoc.

He actually broke Rafa twice which is a miracle.

i guess idk i think im more annoyed that he broken and then immediately failed to break or he was up 40-0 and got broken. i realize a lot is rafa pressing but meh
