Regardless of the draw, since 2017 comeback Fed just can't hit the top gear at the USO. Dont know how much is it about just not able to compete consistently towards the end of the year given his age. Then there's the drastic USO conditions which surely zaps out Fed. Never felt anything positive about USO since 2017.
Well you're only talking about 2 tournaments. 2017 he had the back issue and 2018 he was still dealing with the hand. The placement on the calendar sucks for older players and the conditions are brutal for him, but he would still work through it against someone like John freakin' Millman if he was 100% physically.

This year he's good to go, his game & body has been in great shape since February, but it's his mentality post-Wimbledon heartbreak that needs to be monitored more than anything.

I really want to believe Cincy 19 result was one-off. USO draw will be huge for Fed.
I think it was, because if the loss was just due to the hangover, he probably wouldn't have cruised through his first round so easily.

I didn't see the Rublev match, but based on what everyone was saying it sounded a lot like Medvedev/Djoker today, where the young Russian just wouldn't miss. So unless you're in god-mode form, there's nothing you can do about that.

Of course. Federer follows the same schedule every time before the USO: goes down there as early as possible to get a feel for the conditions and accustom himself to the weather, dials his game and fulfils some contractual obligations as per his sponsorship contracts. He will probably be at the launch of his collection at the Uniqlo flagship store too, which is due tomorrow (19.08).

Maybe this little bit of extra time will benefit him. It will be the first time in 4 years that he entered with a clean bill of health. I hope the weather isn't too hot and the ventilation is better. He said he had to work hard and it appears he's doing just that. I can't wait for night sessions again being an American and all. They have that extra special feeling or atleast they used to. Fed in the black kit hopefully slapping FH and dicing folks up :) I hope it's a memorable tournament this time and he brings his A game.

It will be and he will.

:)

The last time Fedr lost a WB 5-set finals AND lost 3R at Cinci... he won USO. ;)

Brad Gilbert while commentating during the Cincy final: "my guys have played on the surface and have said the Open will play a little faster this year and some attacking play may be rewarded." Then Cahill added, "the bounce is said to be lower this year, might play into Roger's wheelhouse if he's feeling good."

Some good news for Fed fans.

As much as I would like to believ this, I find this hard to believe. Even if it is true, the low bounce is good, but I don't know where I stand on the speed of court for Fed anymore.

I wish we could see this type of ballstriking again...

Why would Gilbert and Cahill prevaricate on this? What would possibly be their motive?
Not motive. Inaccurate. Who told him this? Did they play on the USO courts the past few years? Have they played on other US series courts? Have they played at Melbourne courts? IW? Miami?

Who are these people he speaks of? Without knowing that, yeah, I don't put any stock into it.

Winners. Winners everywhere. Ridic level. Either of these two would annihilate the current field.
Wish we could make everyone on TTW watch this. I always thought Fed was his best skill wise in these days, but I forgot how lethal he could be from anywhere on the court.

However, this also shows how much faster tennis used to be, whether it was the courts or balls.

mhm. Current slow down of conditions is in effect slowly killing the game too. I mean, just look at today's majority of matches in comparison to that highlight reel. In early 2000s, (as in the HL) it was so fast, so furious, and so much aggression and purpose of shots. Different sports almost.

Yep, now it is more rally, rally, rally, try and wait for an error. The shots today are not designed to be offensive.

Fwiw, Brad says every year around this time that he's heard the USO is going to be very slow, and he's always been right ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Uniqlo can't even afford to design decent clothes for him.
It seems like we're in the minority opinion on this. Every time I point out how baggy, unflattering and drab the Uniqlo outfits are, people bitterly complain the Uniqlo kits blow doors off the Nike stuff from the past. In Cincy, I liked the kit and especially the Borg-esque stripe on the top of the socks.

i dont mind the uniqlo outfits, although clearly they dont seem to understand that there are more colors than variations of blue but i was happy to see something different at cincy. albeit short lived. I just wish he could mix and match colors a bit more.

regarding surface, fed himself said he heard it was a bit faster than last year ( i mean really a snail is probably faster than last year). how much that will help or not. Last year he seemed to be playing okay until he didn't against millman and even during that match he was up a set and a break and all seemed to be smooth sailing. I noticed that after his match against rublev, he wanted to practice in some hot weather so he definitely wants to make sure what happened last year doesn't happen again.

Positive thinking at full throttle here, and I'm all with it. But at the USO, Roger should play like the wounded animal he is right now, angry and bitter.

Shoot to kill, and take no prisoners.

This is what having kids does to you - forces you to act normal whatever you're feeling. If he's faking this he's doing it well.

I remember once having ten days of insomnia and still having to seem OK for my daughter.

He's been in the public eye now with the glare of publicity for 18 years. Since 2012, he has managed his public brand incredibly well. I find it hard to believe he's laughing while talking about the most bitter defeat any tennis player has ever experienced in pro tennis. But he doesn't seem phony here, seems legit. That is utterly amazing!

He's been putting things into perspective since he started winning. But as you said, this one hurts a lot and I hope Cincy was enough to get over it.

Because he went through it before in 08/09 probably. When you've survived it once you know you'll survive it again.

We don't know if he'll regard it as his worst defeat when he's looking back, maybe he's rationalised it somehow.

But I said on another thread, he'll have to think about his girls, who are now at the age where they'll understand what's happening to some extent. If they start to get worried about whether he wins or loses then that could affect things.

Federer said he heard the same thing.
