i didn’t watch any of the match but it seems Fed and USO are just at odds with each other now, have been for years. Something always goes wrong.

He admitted he was rusty, but you have a valid point. We'll know better as the tournament progresses and he gets used with the conditions.

I am starting to think that Fed was simply trying to ball bash at times last night. Maybe trying to play this USO differently because it does seem slightly faster than last year.

If he does find a groove with his ball bashing, I honestly think that he could beat a Djoker, or he could lose next round if he does not find that groove.

Maybe he just thought he would find the groove easier, as he seemed to be over hitting everything. Rarely does Fed try to bash the ball, there must be a reason for it. There were times last night when he was on that looked like Fed of the mid 2000's ripping forehands... Then there was, well, the rest.

Now the serve? What the...

The most worrying part for Federer last night was his service games and in particular first serve. Federer early in the year was almost unbreakable but lately it hasn’t been so nailed on. I’d like to see him make a solid and deep run so we could see a Djokovic / Federer rematch. That being said after first set is was smooth sailing until last service game

yes you are right. it was as though Nagal was reading his serve as well as Nadal........ very scary. Disguise on his serve is what makes Federer's serve one of the best on the tour. since he doesn't have the crazy power, if he loses disguise, it is easy to return

I think Djoko has something on Fed in terms of “reading the serve”.

If all you watched was the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th sets, aka the most recent sets - then I thought Fed was fine. He got his first serve % up over 60% for the match which is saying something given how low his % was in the first set.

I will say though that Fed in general has seemed more edgy and beaten down in recent interviews. His confidence has waivered and he's seemed defensive and emotional. That makes me worry that SW19 is lingering. However it also may be him being upset and pissed off with losing SW19 and he may be super driven to win the US Open...

That first set rust won't mean much if his next few rounds look similar to his last 3 sets.

I log in after eons & there's like a million likes by @FedFosterWallace. Thanks mate. It reminded me that I'm posting here from as early as page 98!

Anyway coming to the USO, I think the courts are decently paced & not the dreadful WACAdasa (bouncier than WACA, slower than Premadasa, cricket reference sorry 'Muricans) it was the last 2 yrs.

What do y'all think of that?

Plus, happy & nervous at the same time. Happy that a compatriot kid was going toe to toe with Old man, nervous that he was making Old man expend energy. Hopefully, that's enough rust shaken off for the rest of the tournaments.

I literally have no hope & am taking it 1 set at a time.

I've noticed the same thing. And his body language last night was the poorest I've seen since 2009 Miami. He showed that same desultory body language in Cincy. Gilbert and Agassi have both gone of the record saying they don't believe Roger will ever recover from Wimbledon. We'll see, hopefully they're being alarmist, but they know more about tennis than any of us.

I think it will stay with Fed for a long time. Maybe forever.

I also think if Fed beat Djoko in the SF and won the US Open and then also Won Wimbly next year that two stage scenario would go a long way toward Fed getting over that loss.

Fed losing to Djoko I think bothered him more then losses to Rafa.

i dont know about fed because he is better than me, but that is about hte only way I might be able to get over it. but then he'd be at 22 and i'd be like ****, only point away from 23. greedy i know.

hmmm idk, idt fed enjoyed losing to rafa back when he was dominating everyone.

Thunderstorms predicted for tomorrow afternoon, that may mean Roger plays under the roof. Millman flashbacks beginning to haunt me!
If Federer vs Millman was the Final or the SF with Isner waiting in the final do you think Federer finds a way to gut out the win? The answer is yes.

Whether we want to admit it or not - Federer knew he was in no state to face Nadal in the next round, and didn't have the belief and motivation to put himself in a position to lose.

I thought this was a particularly good post-match presser from Roger. Loved hearing him explain how he adjusted his serve yesterday and also his thoughts on the different balls used on tour.

Ra's clip shows more than the official ESPN one posted.

Funny how people freak out about draws, and then we see what happened tonight in Rafa's draw. There is simply no good consistent tennis players anymore outside the big 3.

I now wish Fed had Rafa's path...
I thought the same, but then changed my mind. Millman would've been Fedr's 1R match, and between the horror of their match at USO18 and Fedr being very rusty as seen last night, it might've taken him going down 2-0 sets before he wakes up. Might be too late by then, losing in 3, 4, or 5. So Nadl can keep his draw ;).

Good point, how come these nobodies never play inspired tennis against anyone else?

The price to pay as GOAT, I guess? They just bring their best bc it's the most glory one can get in a single match against any player. Look at how Delpo folds against Djokodal, but beastmodes against Fedr. At least Stanimal trolled Djokodal a few times and Fedr only once...

I just feel like there will be too many FBPD moments the rest of this tourney, and I almost don't know that I can watch till the QF because if he struggles or even loses before then, I will have a meltdown.

It has been a rough year as a Fed fan, even with his successes he has had (quite a few this year). Other than 2016 WC, I can not remember another point in Fed's career where the future looks so bleak.

Nadal and his USO draws since 2010...you can write a thesis about it. His draws 'opening up" aren't really any coincidence if you ask me.

USO is the slam that rigs draws 100%. I don't know if Fed stole the TD's gf or something but for some reason they have been giving him **** draws and Nadal cakewalks since 2010.

Up until 2011/2012, all the slams had public draws where the players were drawn like a lottery, with a ball machine:

Then they dropped this method and went to pulling names out of a box. Both methods would be harder to rig, obviously. Then the USO started just presenting the draw to the public as already determined. So they announced an already predetermined draw! Then the other slams followed suit. I think the FO was the last draw to actually have a person involved in drawing names while being filmed.

I never believed in rigged draws until the last few years, and now am 95% convinced they are utterly rigged and done so to perpetuate the slam race.

They are rigged IMO, just too many things have happened for me to think it is random.

Wait, have you gotten confirmation that it's the same steam bath environment as last year...?

I've been trying to find out for months. Really no improvement on the ventilation?
No confirmation but by the look of some the players in there it seems to be muggy when the roof is closed.

The problem is that people generally don't actually understand randomness.

Random sequences will contain lots of "patterns".

that is true, people expect that if you flip a coin, odds are it should be 50% or well close to it to get either tails or heads, but because of that you could easily get 9/10 heads. would that be rigged idk? however tbh tennis lacks a lot of transparency and if im not mistaken at one point people boycotted because the felt the draws were unfair.

i still say isner vs mahut drawing each other in r1 at wimbledon 2011 after their epic r1 match in 2010 is suspect

Would love to get more on this one.

Care to elaborate?
Well, a simple one is this. People get worked up when there's a long sequence of shams in which the same top players end in the same half. But when you throw a coin many times, you expect to see some clustering, you expect to see some long sequences of heads or tails.

Also, overall you don't expect the numbers of heads and tails to be even. Yes, the "expected number" is equal, but in a typical sequence of n throws, you kind of expect to get something of an imbalance of the square root of n iirc.

Another famous example is that, typically, within a group of 20 people, you are quite likely to have two who have the same birthday.

Etc.
