His crap was removed. Notice none of this ever happens on the Rafa news thread because Octo/Queen make sure it doesn't (to their credit).

That recent poster wasn't doing what is supposed to be happening in this sub forum:

1. Posting news about Roger
2. "Worshiping responsibly"
Is there a specific mod that focuses on this thread? That was a very quick deletion.

This defeat doesn't bother me that much because Thiem just played too well today. All you can do is congratulate him on a truly inspired level and adroit game plan. He outplayed Roger in every facet of the game.
Yes. That's true. Was a sub par Federer but still kept it fairly close with respect to points won...Thiem though was quite clutch....Something about WTF makes Federer play bad at least for the first match. Happened last year as well.. He looked even worse in that one in my opinion. Him not making the SFs looks quite likely now.....Sort of cyclic considering he failed to make the SFs in the last ever WTF hosted in Shanghai and might repeat it in the last ever WTF in London.....

Frustrating match, but it felt like there was nothing Roger could do. He wasn't playing his best, but Thiem wasn't giving him an inch either. He played the big points incredibly.

His returning was Novak-like at times. He was putting returns right back at Roger's feet, who wasn't quick enough to re-position and could only flick them back into the net.

Well, he was always going to beat Big Berr, so it comes down to beating Djoker. It can be done, just not expected. Will be an exciting match now as I think Djoker will give his best knowing he could knock off Fed.

Fed is not out yet, but will have to bring his A+ game from here on out.

He sure needs to alright....In earlier cases with qualification on the line like in 2013 and 2018, he had to go through the likes of Anderson/Gasquet/Thiem (from 2018) with Del Potro being the only tough match. But with Djokovic, its a different game altogether....It would surely help him if he starts to play freely...But the question is if he will.....

Even Thiem was able to rush him with his returns,I shudder to think what Djokovic will do to him in a few days

Funny thing Federer can lose against Berrettini and then be promoted to the SF.

Federer-Berrettini 1-2
Djokovic-Thiem 0-2
Federer-Djokovic 2-0
Thiem-Berrettini 2-1

1 Thiem 3-0 6-1
2 Federer 1-2 3-4

3 Berrettini 1-2 3-5
4 Djokovic 1-2 2-4

Interesting, no doubt!
And that scenario could lead to Fed/Thiem in the finals,.

So outside of i assume the fact that he needs to beat berrettini in straight sets, what needs to happen for fed to get out of group stages

its no coincidence that these young guys are racking up more wins against fed. this is why i facepalm when they are like i think fed is playing the best ever. honestly what kills me about the h2h against thiem is 2016 grass, i want that to be erased
2016 grass wasn't at WB, so it's okay. Thiem has been winning the close ones against Fedr, but that won't always happen. He also has been playing well when he does meet Fedr, and that also won't always happen. If they both play at a similar level, Fedr wins even at 38yo, so I'm not too worried going forward. Keep in mind that in this 1RR match, Thiem played great while Fedr played below par, yet Thiem only won 5 more points, taking the match 5 and 5. Old Man will be fine for 2-5 more years ;).

lol i know but considering how "well" thiem does on grass that win always bothers me because now you have ppl going oh wow thiem beat fed on all surfaces.

Paul Annacone was commentating on American TV during the Fed-Berrettini match and said a of of interesting things.

He thinks the Wimbledon loss had adversely affected Fed, says he thinks Fed has been mentally "very hampered" by the loss and that he serve is way off. He was serving a lot of 110 MPH first serves today. Annacone discounts injury, just think Roger is mentally in a "funk" because of Wimbledon. And mentioned that Roger playing so many exos late in the year at 38 is a "remarkable decision, considering his age, but I assume Roger knows his body better than anyone."

So Paul was a little grumpy today in his assessment of current Roger.

I hate to be a naysayer, but at age 38, it's likely Federer will not beat Thiem again. The odds would say that is the most likely outcome since Thiem is only 26. And if Roger plays another 2 years (5 years is being... well... very optimistic), it's likely he will have a losing H2H against all the young players because of his advanced age. Connors lost his last 17 matches to Lendl after holding a large H2H advantage to him before he was 33.

I can live with that. But after seeing how 2019 played out, I just have more faith in The Old Man than most. Or did we forget how Fedr dismantled a well-playing Tsits at Basel19? Fedr was actually close to being #1 player thru WB19, form-wise overall, only thwarted by the CPs at WB.

Keep in mind that Thiem has to play very-good-to-great to beat Fedr, even a 38yo Fedr.

I have to give you props for your half glass full attitude with Fed! (y)

Appreciate that.

I see many Fedfans lose the forrest for the trees this year after WB19. To further elaborate, let's look at 2019, but Fedr converting CP. By then, titles are:

Fedr: 4 (1 slam, 1 masters, 2x 500, 1 masters finals, and consistenly best overall form).
Nadl: 2 (1 slam, 1 masters)
Djokr: 2 (1 slam, 1 masters, 1 masters finals)

Yes, his play post WB19 dampened it a lot, but we shouldn't lose sight of his 2019 year, which is still great. I mean, he's 38, but still won 4 titles (that really should've been 6), and he was VERY close to being #1 player. Like you've often said, his level at this age is unprecedented. For me, bc of his style of play (further backed by his 2019 play overall), Fedr will always be a threat, only less often.

All it takes is a win against Djoker and order will be restored... at least for a few days. But I truly do think this match against Djoker is huge for Fed. Really think he could use this wins simply for mental reasons.

Great post, Oldmanfan. You are a fan to truly make Roger proud!

I thought he bounced back and had a great chance to win the USO of he hadn't gotten hurt and then we wouldn't be talking about Wimbledons affect on him anymore.
Problem is, it all coincides together. Fed played a lot of tennis at 37 years old this year. He had an emotional summer that had to be rough mentally (championship points and injury).

At the same time, he turned 38, and the young players are only improving. These things together do have an effect. Now which was is affecting him more? Not sure.

That being said, I do think he can reset with a big win against Djoker or simply an off-season. His best tennis is now played from January to mid July. Anything after that is gravy. Really, it is all gravy considering 6 years ago I thought we were gearing up for a "goodbye" tour.

I only had a real small hope for 2019 Wimbledon trophy and it was so damn close. The level of epicness would have been absurd had the 37 yr old beat Djokdal back to back. Alas, some things are never meant to be. All in all, a pretty damn good season for a 37 yr old.

Looking forward to 2020 with absolute no hope at all.

I think The Fedman got the Djoker where he wants him to be. Will the Fedman prevail in what could be possibly the final act of “revenge”? Or will the Djoker display his trademark wicked laugh?

Stay tuned for the final episode to be aired on Thu.

It was an incredibly memorable and successful year for a 37/38 year old if you can look past the pain of 1 single point in July. Especially thinking back to where he was 12 months ago. The hand issue had sapped him of so much FH power, and he just looked sluggish every day. He barely managed to win Basel against a nobody in the final. The end felt very near.

This year has been a massive success when I consider my expectations in January.
