I think Djokovic and Nadal may not win FO now. Djokovic has won Madrid and is in the final in Rome. He has played a lot of tennis on clay in the past 2 weeks, and as a 32 yo, he won't just be able to maintain the right form day in day out. Nadal also has looked more vulnerable than ever on clay. I think we could have some surprize winner like Zverev or - who else? - the GOAT.

But Nadal has played even more. Honestly I don’t know what this guy is on. 33, such style of play, literally playing four weeks in a row on clay. I don’t think Roger has ever done that at 33? Only because Roger has set an example no one now even brings up this question of longevity and how ‘amazing’ Nadal is at this age. It’s not normal.

It would be hilarious if Zverev won RG.

Well, if Nadal wins Rome he will regain his confidence and it would be very tough to beat on Chatrier. This final in Rome is more important than we might think, from the mental perspective :)

That's one important aspect and I also thought about that. However, Nadal is now almost 33 and he hasn't been all that impressive on clay this year. I think he will be beatable even at Philippe Chartrier and unless he gets lucky with the draws, it won't be as easy as previous years.

Maybe that's why he hasn't won anything this clay season yet. ;)

To be honest, I think this year's FO is wide open and will be very unpredictable. The draw will be extremely important. I think there is a great chance we will get an unexpected winner this year.
Meh at the end of the day I think it will come down to either Rafa or nole. Even though we had some different winners on clay this season, Madrid and now Rome tell a bit of a different story and its much harder to put away those two in bo5.

I think Nadal's form has not been as consistent this year during clay season, so he looks more vulnerable than ever. With Djokovic, he simply has played a lot of tennis and may feel tired during FO. Today's final is his 9th match in 2 weeks and FO will start in a week. I think he may feel his age this year but we'll see.

This whole clay season experiment might backfire really bad on Fed.

Imagine getting re-injured during RG and carrying that all the way through the rest of the year.

I still think the best option for Rog is to show up in Paris to do some PR/media, but withdraw citing injury and start practicing on grass (Nadal playbook)

There is absolutely nothing to be gained playing RG. No way he wins... Going deep is no moral victory.

Roger got some match practice during Madrid & Rome and he should be happy with that.

I understand your points and concerns, but nothing is guaranteed. I mean, Fedr injured his hand during practice at Stuttgart18 after an extended break. Yes, it's very logical to say that playing more means higher chances of injury, but at the end of the day, Fedr is a pro-tennis player. Playing tennis is what he does. To top it off, the dude just loves to play. Let him make the choices and enjoy the ride. It's fine to be concerned, but don't stress too much, as it's out of our hands. Savor each match, as it's closer to the end than the beginning. ;)

Roger seems relaxed and should play freely come this French Open. He really doesn't have the burden of expectations which logically come with his excellent results at the other three slams. He needs to focus on his baseline game and after the loss at whichever stage, should just move on to Wimbledon. It has and will always be the Holy Grail in tennis and his best chance at no.21, hopefully with the added bonus of not letting the other two add to their slam counts if he meets them on his way to the title. He knows what to do, what matters is if he is able to do it. Let's hope that 8 weeks from now Roger gets Nine.

So, taking away RG points Roger and Rafa are almost exactly even on ranking points (Roger 5 points ahead). So Roger would need to match Nadal's result at RG in order to retake #2. Which means that a) he is closer to it than I thought he'd be, to be honest; b) we can forget about him taking over anytime soon, unless something very strange happens in Paris.

Depends on when you mean by 'soon'. Official #2 is close, as I think Fedr is basically guaranteed #2 seed at WB, which may help a lot to get official #2 back bc Nadalovic SF could happen. Fedr defends 550pts pre-WB (Stuttgart win + Halle F) so if he wins Halle19, then that basically cancels out. Nadal defends 720pts at WB vs. Fedr's 360pts. Then Nadal defends 1000pts at Canada (zero for Fedr), so Fedr could be #2 at start of Cinci or as early as at the end of WB. Any earlier is too slim a chance, but not impossible ;).

If the seeds hold up and there are no upsets -

Federers path will be -
1R,2R - Unseeded players
3R -
One of (Wawrinka,FAA,Simon,Goffin,Edmund,Berrettini,Lajovic,Djere)
4R -
One of (Coric,Monfils,Raonic,Basilashvili)
QF -
One of (Tsitsipas,Zverev,Nishikori,JMDP)
SF -
One of (Nadal,Djokovic)
F -
Top seed of other half
I know draws have a way of falling through but would be an ideal draw for fed be?

That's funny, Borg was exactly the same and yet was idolised by press and fans. IceBorg they called him....
He wasn't the rock star back then that people tout today.
Incorrecto, .Anno.

From the International Tennis Hall of Fame:

https://www.tennisfame.com/hall-of-famers/inductees/bjorn-borg

"Björn Borg was a rock ‘n roll star draped in tennis clothes.

His massive appeal, based not only on his extraordinary tennis ability, but on his good looks and shy manner, made him a worldwide tennis teen idol. “He was like the Beatles for God’s sake,” said Ingrid Lofdahl-Bentzer, a close Borg friend.

Borg polarized tennis in the 1970s. Known as the “ice man” for his frosty temperament on court – never, ever letting his opponent get a hint of what was boiling inside him – Borg was the epitome of cool. Everything from the way he walked onto the court, to his long hair that flowed to his shoulders, to the headbands he always wore, to his Donnay racquet that featured a longer leather handle to accommodate his two-handed backhand, created hysteria.

He was tennis’s biggest drawing card. It was called 'Borgmania'."

Brown would have looked better as red or blue.

He's never worn red top black shorts at roland garros. Novak did in 2016 I think it was and looked great.

There are definitely better colors. But if Fedr only wears the best colors all of the time, then they become bland by repetition, no? Variety is the spice of life, no? ;)

The fact that this can be my last RG? Each tournament can be the last. Yes, it is not excluded, it's true. I do not see my arrival at Roland Garros this year as if it was the last. I want to play it like 10 years ago, it does not change

Google translated:
I will be happy if I win a few games and if I can maybe spend the first week of RG. But it would be a shame to visit RG and the land season is over. It would be bad, but I will give my best

Sorry. Meant to say Polo top.

He started going to polos mostly full time in 2007. He wore crews a few times like IW 2009 or IW 2013 but from 2007 to even now it has mostly been polos.
Kind of. Depends if you consider henleys to be polos. Because that's been his go to for a few years now.

But yeah, definitely more polos than tees in the time frame you're talking about.

Incorrect Dedanso

I actually lived back then and don't remember "Borgmania". In fact the only place I hear about it is on this board, where the average age is 15.

Ann, I DO remember it, and I'm 70. ;)

I played tennis, my brother played tennis, both my parents learned. There were courts everywhere, and tennis had the highest popularity I remember. I won't say that Borg was as popular as the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, but he was pretty damned iconic!

However, I think tennis fans have a disproportionate idea of the popularity of tennis, at least in the US. I don't know about other countries.

That's not the case. He tended to wear crews at non-major events and polos at majors. In the last 3 or so years he's worn henley's at majors (e.g. at all the majors in 2017 and 2018). He started wearing polos again this year.

I consider henleys to be a form of polo. Because they have the cut and some have buttons like polos at the neck.

Crews are entirely different.

If we're going strictly from his Nike days then off the top of my head from 2007 to 2017 the times he wore crews and not henley/polo

2009 Indian Wells Black crew
2010 dont recall him wearing a crew at all that year.
2011 clay masters
2012 hardcourt summer masters
2013 wore crew for spring season as well as clay
2014 entire clay season.
2015 big change. Wore crews almost about same as polos. Australia/Spring/Clay Masters/Indoor Season. Polos he wore RG, Wimby, Summer Masters/USO.
2016 the few tourneys he did play he was wearing polos.
2017 don't remember him wearing crew shirt at all that year other than USO only. Indoor season went back to polos IIRC.

2018 dont think he wore collared polos at all from Nike. I think they were henleys though.

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't believe Roger's "injury" was real. I thought then and still do that he and his team felt 2 matches in one day and then another match the next morning was just pressing their luck and just begging for him to actually get hurt. Roger got what he needed out of the tournament.

No you're not. There was no injury from the wet lines, as was suggested. Fed made the right call not risking injury or excessive fatigue after that two-match day last week. He never claimed he was injured, Ben Rothenburg came out with that and he's been wrong many times in the past. Roger wasn't going to beat Nadal anyway, and he would have faced him had he beat Tsitsipas. Two straight QF's was a great result. I'm hoping for a QF result in Paris. :)
