If Roger had only a couple BPs then I'd say he got crushed. But didn't he go something like 1/14 on BPs? That can happen to any player on an unlucky day. They just go cold on key points. I'm way more concerned about his return numbers in games. There are only two guys who made it to 30% of games this year on HC, with Nadal right on 30%. Novak, by the way, was marginally below 32%, a decline for him that he will either reverse or he's simply not going to dominate in the same way. Fed is below 27%, hardly bot numbers but still just not strong enough to be a solid contender for majors.

If one compares Fed's perfs vs Novak then Tsitsipas, i believe he was affected by a tennis elbow contracted during the Novak match: missed smashes, volleys, FH and shanked BH galore. He wanted to win so bad, he overused the wrist and it flared the elbow.
Stefanos served well, but that's about it. He too was obviously affected by the Nadal match, but Fed was even more affected by the Novak one.
Fed simply gave that match to Stefanos, it was a terrible non-perf.
But still Kudos to Tsitsipas for keeping it together.

Yep, if he stays at those return numbers he will have to serve lights out and hit on BP's. Age is the reason for the decline in both in my opinion.
I am sure you can say this about a lot of players years, but if Fed was simply more clutch in key moments, he would of made it deeper at the AO, won WC, and possibly won WTF.

For years now I've been posting games and showing how the guys who get close to or above 60% of games for the years are generally the guys who win major. It's not different this year, so on HC when you combine service and return games, Novak and Rafa are at the top. There they are again. Rafa, 30% even on return. Novak, 31.5%. With those figures they need to be at around 90% of service games. So then you go to serving, and there are the same two guys. Rafa 91.58%. Novak 88.51%. So Novak is almost exactly at 60%, but rafa is a bit higher. These are HC figures. If they both stay there, they are overwhelming favorite again at the HC slams.
Thing is, this is not predictive. It is analytical, which is all that I do. It says nothing about where they will be in 12 months.
Nadal fans should be very strong on where he is now. He has never served this well, and the last match I saw he was making some impressive serve and volley plays. Novak is very shaky, and his fans have not seen this. His return stats are the worst since something like 2009. This doesn't mean it's not reversible. But he needs 32% or higher on return because his ceiling on serve is usually around 88%, maybe 89%. If he finds a way to boost that into the 90s, then he'll still be on top because his serve in general was much weaker back in 2011. Most people forget that.
Fed is clearly #3 now because his return stats remain considerably weaker and even his incredibly serve can't pull him up to the same level.
People forget that Fed was about where Nadal is this year back in 2015. 2015 Fed would have great chances in every slam in 2020 because Novak is nowhere near his 2015 level. But expecting Fed to turn back the clock again is unreasonable, so his only chance at a slam is to raise his level at the end of majors as Pete used to do, which is a pretty big ask at age 38. I don't think he now has that extra gear.

i like how this is the thing people are talking about after the match. i cant tell if it was the court or just being exhausted but it definitely wasn't a high quality match, and the crowd seemed rather tense from what i was told, perhaps they were expected a fed clinic but fed played a crappy first set, and it was going okay in the second until sascha started throwing in double faults left and right. at first i was like ohh sascha is just being kind and gifting roger the second but then it just got worse and it seems his shoulder was bothering him,
but this hug got feeling all types of ways, it was so sweet.

Dunno. Maybe the atmosphere, maybe he couldn't give it a bit more for the fans bc he was hampered down 1-3 in the 3rd (2-3 DFs in that game to go down 2 breaks). Maybe it was simply special bc that is A LOT of people giving it an unprecedented atmosphere (slams center courts' max is only 15,000+). If the below vid still works, check it out. The fans absolute loved it, everyone did really, and both Fedr and Z gave great speeches afterwards too.
It was a night to celebrate tennis.

I find Z likeable off-court, more often than not. It's his on-court intensity and reactions that rubs a bit wrong at times (the intensity is not a bad thing in general, bc it means he cares). Fedr has supported Z and has warmed up to him since the beginning, well before Team8 signed him this year. Fedr simply sees him differently than TTW.What is this feeling?
