Fedr on Match For Africa with Rafa in February 2020:

[So for those who couldn’t watch Federer’s interview on DSTV about the Match in Africa, here are some highlights. Some of this is paraphrased because I couldn’t record it or write fast enough to get exact quotes.]

[THREAD]

Spoke about his late coach, Peter Carter, who was like a big bro/father figure to him, how important he was at that early stage of his career. Some coaches come at the right time. Roger said that he might make a good coach for a professional one day, but maybe not for a junior.

About the SA exho, it's difficult to organise events with the relentlessness of the tour. When thinking about who to play against, the 1 player who came to mind was Rafa – his fiercest and toughest rival. Rafa was v. happy to help the foundation but finding a date took some time

Asked about his earliest memory of South Africa, and he spoke about the various places throughout the country that he used to visit on holiday as a child and spending time with family. He mentioned how much his dad loves to come back to to visit family.

Talked about the importance of education. Growing up in as a kid you don’t always want to go to school, but there are places where others would love the opportunity to go to school. Education can't be taken away from you, it makes you a better citizen and the country better

He wants to enjoy this time of his career, there will be things waiting for him after retirement, most importantly being a good father. Spoke about being a “cool” dad. His girls are more aware of his achievements because they are older but he doesn’t like to make a big deal of it

He’s quite childish with his kids, he wrestles with them. He tries to be a fun dad, the creative one, but is also firm and doesn’t want Mirka to always have to be the bad cop. They switch roles.

Roger said the 2013 back injury was difficult because, while he could still play, he couldn’t produce the results he had without the injury and didn’t want to talk about it with the media. Knee surgery in 2016 was scary because it was the first surgery he’d had in his career.

It changed way he viewed his body, now he can take different decisions to protect his body. He has worked hard to be still playing in his late thirties.

Asked about the Springboks (SA's national rugby team who just won the World Cup). He watched a few games towards the end of the RWC and was so happy for the team, for the country and the continent. He hopes he can meet the team. Spoke glowingly of Siya Kolisi (our captain)

To the fans who are coming to Cape Town in Feb, Roger said thank you for buying a ticket, promises they will use that money wisely to help Southern African children’s education. Asks the crowd to be as loud as possible.

He cares that people are there and it’s been his dream to play in Cape Town. Roger said that walking out in front the crowd with Rafa is going to be special.

Will it be on TSN/ESPN or tennis channel in Feb?

Now I am interested in this Fed show. I truly believe Zverev and Fed have a strong bond as this is something more than just a few exhibitions. Both have cried and hugged each other.
What I took away from the show was that Zverev now has absolutely no veneration or awe of Fed, he's just another opponent. That will not bode well when they play each other in the future. It reminds me of young Sampras training with Lendl at Ivan's Greenwich home and then beating him in the USO a few months later. Pete said, "I had gotten to know him, there was no fear or awe anymore."

I still havent watched it yet, but that is good for Zverev, not so much for Fed. But I feel like that has already happened. Weird though, as I would think this trip would do the opposite seeing how much Fed is beloved.

That's precisely my point. I always thought Laver Cup was not great for Roger either, since his removes his aura and mantle of invincibility to these younger players. They just see him as a "regular guy," instead of the GOAT after hanging around him at the LC. I don't think it's a coincidence that Thiem has defeated Fed 3/4 times they've met since LC was instituted. Obviously Zverev at his age should be beating Gramps in his sleep, but this exo IMO won't help Roger against Zverev in the future. I hope I'm mistaken.

But this comes back to what I was trying to say months ago (ATP Cup situation). He is thinking more about his legacy and planning for the future then worrying about winning now. I get you can do both, but it looks like he has chosen legacy over short term tennis goals.

If that’s all you took away from this show and I don’t know what to say. At this stage of Fed’s career he cares more about relationships and legacy than if someone fears him.

Make sure you repeat that to yourself if Zverev beats Roger in a slam final next year. You bet I care about him winning more slams and the window of opportunity is very slim at age 38.5.

I think you're likely mistaken.

re:Thiem, 2 of those 3 Thiem wins were super close, and Fedr should've/could've closed both out. Nadl and Djokr hangs with Fedr at LC too, yet Fedr owns Nadl since AO17, and Djokr only wins close matches recently, and he hasn't been able to win a set from Fedr by a break up, going on 10 sets played now (starting with their Bercy18 match). And the last time Fedovic met, Djokr was considered the heavy favorite by most, yet Fedr beat him easily.

Sure, the youngsters may not fear Fedr now, or at least not as much, but they still have to 'beat' him, a difficult task still, and often with a bit of help from The Old Man bc, yah know, 'old' ;).

One would have to assume that the moment may get the better of Zverev if he were to face Federer in the finals. But in any other round, it should be an even fight. Zverev's key in his victories over Federer has been his serve...Bring that to the court, it would be tough regardless of which round it is.

Fair enough.

But if we were to use stipulations and suggesting Z bringing his serve, then similary we should allow for Fedr to bring his game too. In a like-for-like level between them, imo Fedr wins 8/10 times, even past 38yo, bc Fedr's good return days still easily neutralize big servers (see Miami19: Big John serves better than Z, yet was broken more than once).

True. Federer was definitely below par in all of his defeats against Zverev and Zverev to his credit was playing great. And, that's probably the Fed that we will have to deal with in the coming days. Federer in top gear would win on most occasions. Like the Federer who magically sprang back to level the set when Zverev was serving for the match...But will we get that is the question...especially against the searing young guns.

This 'may' come back to bite me, but for some odd reason, I'm fairly confident in Fedr going into 2020, even as he'll be a year older. I'm WAY more confident in him than I was going into 2019, and 2019 turned out great, 'almost' amazing. As consolation, he did beat a great Nadl at WB19, played better than Djokr in the WB19 finals, backed by easily beating him when they met a few months after at WTF19.

Bring on 2020, I say! :D

True, it was still a good year for Federer which could have been great had he done what he had to do...The two weeks during Wimbledon has to be the most stress-inducing times for me as a fan...And the frustrating thing was that it all ended in despair...I am truly hoping to never experience that again...I still hugely believe in Federer but my expectations are tempered for sure...Can't wait for the next season to start though...

It is the only way to go about it. As Rafa said "what happened happened."

Sure, at 38 he is not expected to do much except maybe WC, but I think he can actually play a little more stress free this year, because honestly, I think he has let go of fighting for the slam race and is content with losing it.

I don't mean this in a negative way, but I think he feels confident in his resume and legacy and plans to further his legacy by these "Zverev" moments and LC moments.

He wants to win more slams no doubt, but I do get the sense he is at ease with Rafa passing him and I believe he is fighting for one more opportunity to show he can still get it done. Whether that be AO, WC, or OG.

Fed is not the same player he was during his WC19 run, and likely won't see it again except for maybe one or two brief moments. So I will enjoy this year with a positive outlook, as afterall... he is on borrowed time and we get it for free.

I am calling he get WC20.

I won't deny you your WC20.

But I'm calling Fedr 2-slams season in 2020. :happydevil:

rodger is simply helping zverev to become better so that he can beat nole and nadal thereby preventing both of them from over taking him in the slam race; genus

I used to be worried about the slam race, but now I've accepted that he's getting passed and I'm ready to just enjoy the show.
If you asked me right now, I'd agree with you.

But if he finds himself going deep in Australia next month you better believe I'll start stressing and dreaming again and thinking about how he could get to 21 and hold off getting passed for another year.

Yes, of course, and that is because we care. But I think what changes is the feeling after a week or two goes by. I don't ever think about WC anymore. Ever. It hurts less.

I think if Federer can win another Major in 2020 to get to 21. Theres a really good chance that it will never be broken. I'm absolutely convinced that Novak will not win 5 more majors. And to be honest.... I think Nadal has one or two left in him at best. So 21 should get the job done.

Imagine Uniqlo's enormous smile right now. They signed Fed for a ton of money and two years into their partnership, Roger nails down GQ's most stylish man of the decade. Uniqlo's brand recognition goes through the roof now because the most stylish man alive wears their brand of clothing. Uniqlo looks like they made a brilliant move nailing down Fed for 10 years.
