Medvedev has just overtaken Federer in the ATP ranking. Federer is 5th now.

Total 804 weeks in the Top 4. Almost 16 years. Impressive.

One encouraging thing is that it looks like Roger has regained much of the muscle mass in his calves. In the lockdown videos he was putting up in April, his legs looked skinnier and w/o their usual definition.

Fed gives an update on his knees, future retirement plans and his training:

Federer's new life "I'm almost a professional chauffeur"

The tennis ace has intensified training with a view to his comeback. And he still enjoys the days without competition stress.

The Federer fans were starting to worry. The Australian Open (starting in mid-January) is getting closer, but until recently Federer only appeared on promo dates for his various sponsors and was not seen on the court. Recently, however, the selfies with Federer in tennis gear have been increasing on social media. He has been training in the tennis center in Langnau.

At a promo event for his shoe brand, he told us how his training is going. "I was on the court five out of six days last week," he said. "That was a lot of fun. I hadn't done that since February. When I look back, I see that my knee has already improved a lot. It was a long process. I feel progress, maybe not every day, but week after week. I do as much as my knee allows. The last time has been encouraging."

Federer declared his season over after his second operation on his right knee, and he's been working on his return to the tour ever since. First with fitness trainer, Pierre Paganini, and for a few weeks now back on the court. "I'm still fighting for my comeback," he said. "I would like to play against the best again. And I have the feeling that I still have something in me . I'm not retiring anytime soon."

But Federer did not hide the fact that he has been happy without the stress of comepetition: “What is eliminated is the stress of playing a match and having to sleep in late the following morning because I got to bed late. Everything is much more relaxed, not only for me, but also for the children and my wife. We went running or hiking and celebrated birthdays extensively. The girls do homeschooling. We try to develop certain routines, to make a plan for everyone. The situation allowed us to plan longer, which is otherwise not possible. Otherwise everything will always be decided at the last minute."

The corona and injury break enabled Federer to look after his Swiss friends more after all these years as a globetrotter. "At such times, you will be more aware of what is really important: health, friends and Family." He enjoys experiencing his children even more intensely, seeing them grow up. "I've almost become a professional chauffeur," he said with a smile. "I drive my children to their activities and pick them up again. It's almost a full-time job. "

Is it because of the still frame or Federer seems to be changing his FH technique?

New article from today on Fed's training and plans for 2021. Oldmanfan posted some of the audio portions of this previously, this is the print version:

Roger Federer: "The Olympics, my biggest goal"

In a video chat this weekend, the Balois spoke about his semi-confinement in Switzerland, the family appeal to Japan and the season ahead. In his sights especially, the Olympic Games.

After 22 years on the ATP circuit road, Roger Federer has, due to injuries (note: double knee operation) and the coronavirus pandemic, spent several months in the same place for the first time in a long time. And so made the most of his family to recharge the batteries before the home stretch of his career. "I was rather well occupied during the semi-confinement in Switzerland, between activities with the family, my rehabilitation, and the resumption of training." Federer explained during a video exchange for a Japanese platform during the weekend. "But it was wonderful to be home and enjoy the family."

Weaned from competition for several months, the Swiss, now 39 years old, will attack 2021 with hunger pangs. And, if he is currently preparing for the Australian Open, the man with the 20 Grand Slams has especially emphasized the Olympic Games for the coming season.

"My major aspiration is to be there for the Olympics, that's my biggest goal,” said Roger Federer, interviewed by Kei Nishikori, also sponsored by Uniqlo. "Maybe selfishly I can say that it was not a bad thing for me that the Games were moved, with the problems I had last season. But yes, it is clearly the one of my big goals. I really hope that I will be able to come back to Tokyo and Japan for this event."

Roger Federer knows the region well having visited it with his family last year. And it is likely to come back to it more and more often as part of its partnership with Uniqlo. That's good, his whole family likes it a lot. “Mirka loves the country and the culture, too, and my kids still talk so much about Japan, I'm really amazed at how much this experience left a positive memory for them.”

If the Games can take place this summer, the Maestro will try to conquer the only great title that has escaped him so far: a gold medal in singles. It remains to be seen whether he will line up in doubles with Stan Wawrinka, as when they were crowned in Beijing in 2008. “With Roger, we have not yet talked about the Olympic Games,” explained Stan during the Masters 1000 in Paris-Bercy, a month ago. It is very far, not only if we take into account the tennis program but also with everything that is happening in the world at the moment. It is very difficult to project yourself, to talk about what will happen in nine months. Because we don't know where we will be at that time. ”

Roger isn't retiring, is he ?
It looks like he'll make one last push for Wimbledon and the OGM in the summer of 2021, at least that's what he's indicating. Some people here are posting quotes from Fed that he didn't make, the exact translation of what he said yesterday (which was anything but promising) was:

"I hope that in 2021 I will find the courts again. We will see. But if my career has to end now, well, it would be incredible to end it with this award."

I knew it was bad news when he wasn't doing his training block in Dubai, which he's done every year since 2005. The indoor training facility near Wollerau that he was hitting at hasn't seen him in almost two weeks now, which can't be good news. And he's constantly being sighted out and about while not training, like here last week:

The father of this boy here owns the indoor tennis facility Fed has been hitting at. He gives updates on his social media every day, Fed hasn't had a hit there since December 5:

I think there's plenty of cause for overall concern about 2021 being the end, but not going to Dubai for his traditional training block doesn't concern me. Every time he's given an update he's said his knee still isn't 100%, so why would he rush off to Dubai (while still in the middle of a pandemic) to train for a season that won't be starting on time anyway?

Pure speculation... But I wonder if there is something going on with the need to time reentry with a TUE for his knee.

I wonder if there is some consideration to timing that kind of thing well.

it just seems strange to me that Lub and Luthi have been giving good reports and then all of the sudden AO / IW get iffy and then Fed gets really ambiguous and doubtful about his return.

Again - just pure 100% speculation.

There’s no real reason i know of it has to be anything other than what he says in the published remarks.

i think I just want it to be “part of the plan” cause if this is it I’ll be very very bummed.

At this point it seems odd he’d go to Dubai before Christmas. Celebrate Christmas at home with family and go after.

He's always spent Christmas in Dubai for years, so it wouldn't be any different this year. He never has spent Christmas in Switzerland (except once) for over a decade. They're going to Dubai very late this year, Fed's usually there by Nov. 25. And spending Christmas in his Dubai penthouse wouldn't be half bad. :)
