Roger is done. He will put out a statement in the coming days about how sad he is not to be able to play the US Open. Then he will probably play doubles or something at Laver Cup or maybe not even that. He will say he's going to try and be 100% for the beginning of 2022, but that is just for sponsors and tournaments because reality is his body is done. Then he will come out with a statement at the end of this year or the beginning of next year stating that he's retiring because his body won't let him train properly anymore. There you go folks. That is what's coming I promise you that. I've seen it to many times from federer.

Nah. He will play 22 but it will not be pretty at times. But he is not pulling a sampras.

I think 2022 will be a fine farewell year, my estimate is what I expected for 2021 pre-pandemic.

ATP Cup
AO
MI
IW
Halle
WMB
CIN
USO
SHG
Basel

A nice round 10 tournaments to boot. He'll get favorable draws regardless of ranking.
Yeah I think this is the schedule he will play next yr as well. Then it will be the end hopefully he’s knee recovers get the send off he deserves.

Could see him skipping three of those and replace it with FO.

The three I don't see him playing is Shanghai, Miami, and ATP cup.

He's massive in Asia and he didn't even play Tokyo. Plus Shanghai has one of the fastest surfaces with recent success. I don't see barring lockdowns him not playing Shanghai. Miami is also with IW a really successful tournament for him.

ATP Cup is possible skip but he needs some warm-up for AO.

I was hopig till recently that he will play the USO but it seems that ain't gonna happen.Sadly, 2019 might have ben the last time he played in New York.

I do think he is calling it a day for this season. I don't think he will be retiring this year, he will want one last shot, but difficult to see beyond 2022 now for him. That glorious sunset is starting to fade a little bit more.

Roger said two days ago:

“I am always deeply touched when Pete Sampras, Björn Borg or Stefan Edberg think of me. All three of them called me almost at the same time for my 40th birthday. It's almost unreal to me, because they were my favorite players, my idols when I was young."

Lets not overinterpret his words. What he said was very straightforward. He is having surgery and he understands its very unlikely (“glimmer of hope”) he will be back to contend for titles. But he will try and hopefully be back on court if he recovers well enough (“some shape or form”) for a farewell tour or tournament. I think we will see him again on court, not as a contender but to say goodbye.
Wangs said it perfectly.

He knows it is not looking good, but he will get his body ready for a send off in 22.

Glimmer of hope is not good. But still think he plays Halle, WC, and Basel next year. But he is retired in thE sense.

He seems to know it and accepting it.
Father Time sends him packing in straights and no wonder, he is not a robot after all.I think he needs to quit tennis for good in order for that knee to be 100% healed, that's how serios the problem is.No problem, he was competitive till amost 38 :)

It will bother me with this akward goodbye. But if he thinks that is what is best good for him.

But I wanted that moment.

Nobody wanted him to end his Wim carrer with a bagel, and now hes gonna end his whole carrer with a bagel.

I was certain he'd be taking the rest of the season off to recover, a la 2016 when his knee still wasn't totally healed from his January surgery and just needed extended rehab.

But not this, I didn't see another surgery coming. Now we're right back to where we were last year. He might not be built back up in time for Australia again.

This knee turned out to be such a problem. And it supposedly started with Federer slipping when giving his children a bath, didn't it? :cautious:

I can't, won't believe his career will end with injury. Whatever the doctors and he can do, Roger will probably come back for some farewell tournament(s). Saying he wants to return in whatever form is the positive to take from this.

AO will not happen. He was on crutches 2 months after the first two meniscus surgeries and then could do no training (on court or in the gym) for 4 months after that. So if Fed has his knee surgery tomorrow, the earliest he will even hit a tennis ball will be mid-February, 2022.

What’s amazing is that to perhaps his last match ever, he didn’t go out the coward’s way by retiring to avoid the 6-0 set.

I think he has just too much willpower and passion to go out this way and will rehab and end his career on court next year if there is a chance he can do so.

It also has to be said that throughout all these years his rival was the one who talked about knee this and knee that for 15+ years and still has never had any surgeries while Federer is now going to have his third surgery.

This is just too sad. I was just hoping to see him play in the US Open. Will miss him badly.. I had tears in my eyes when I watched the Instagram video..

At least if the farewell tour won't include Australia, it's fair enough that those fans got the last "healthy" Federer. Yeah he was old and beat up, but that run to the semis in 2020 was awesome. The Millman and Sandgren matches will 99% likely go down as his last great 5 set efforts.

Now I'm desperately hoping he finds a way to be healthy enough to go to New York one last time in 2022 so I can see him before the likely end in Basel.

I'd rather he just lose in the 1st/2nd round everywhere if it means it keeps him healthy enough to keep traveling and entering every tournament he wants to before calling it quits. I enjoyed the hell out of his run to the quarters at Wimby this year, but clearly it was also his downfall. The knee just couldn't take that many high effort Bo5 matches in a row.

Well this blows. Clearly he wasn't going to play for the rest of this year, but I didn't expect a third surgery.
2022 definitely seems like the end but he was competitive until 38 and even reached the Wimbledon QF this year. Can't ask for more than that.

Yeah, there is a possibility that he finally decided to let it go.His body is not cooperating anymore, so it's understandable.

I honestly think if there were a way out for him, this would be it right here. He doesn't owe anyone a farewell tour, if he does, it's to himself only.

I'll obviously be sad if he were to retire like this, but time will heal, it's maybe the most reasonable decision if he's currently happy with his non-tennis life.

Fed is concentrating on the IPO drop for On shoes coming up within a few weeks. He's transitioning for active athlete to billionaire marketer and ambassador for his shoe and Uniglo. I really think tennis is in his rear view mirror and he won't play again. Hope I'm wrong.

Absolutely and at the end of the day it's tough to play while continuing to struggle physically, that's not fun anymore.I mean, had his body been ok, well he could have played for as long as Ken Rosewall did, that if the passion would still be there :D

Nice to see him smiling. Seems to be enjoying his outside life more and more. Don't think tennis is really on his mind anymore.
I'm not saying tennis is on his mind but also Federer seems like he always was a positive smiley guy outside of tennis. Especially after 2016 when he probably had thought a lot about how this could be it and became less focused on winning, he didn't seem to sulk for extended periods of time even when things weren't that great with his game. He's a happy fullfilled person without tennis now, but I wouldn't take it as him not caring about playing anymore
