Federer not on centre court....

Wow, talk about the patriotic French!

Tomorrow, Gasquet and Monfils get centre court. Sure, they're French, makes sense, right?

Of course, Monfils isn't seeded and Gasquet is only 11, but they're French, so yeah... give them some exposure.

Some other guy, people have been raving about him, he has been winning a few matches over the past few years... well he's out on Court Lenglen. I think Federer is his name?

(Adding insult to injury is that he's playing a Frenchman - just imagine being one of the greatest players ever to play, being a current dominant number 1 and equal-tournament-favourite, and playing a Frenchman in France.... and still not scoring centre-court! I'm glad I'm not one of the people who has paid for Centre-court tickets!).

Nothing will ever compare with Wimbledon putting Sampras on the graveyard court (#2) where sure enough, he lost.

Or, on the other end of the spectrum, the biased scheduling in Roddick's favor for the '03 USO.

In addition to that, Federer´s match is scheduled the last one in S. Lenglen court so if the previous matches are longer than expected or it rains for a while it could be postponed or not played entirely.

That does seem obscene in retrospect, doesn't it!

I been to the FO and I know how patriotic they are, but the Fed decision seems bizarre....

I agree this is pathetic. History is happeneing as we post. This guy has a shot at winning all 4 majors in one year, and is the current # 1, and # 1 seed. Additonally, as you state, if he has to play late and does not finish the match, he will have to play 2 days in a row. and let's not even talk about the rain issue over there possibly messing up the scheduling even more.

On a side note>> Even drak got scheduled on center court this weekend. :)

Did Federer say something to upset Roland Garros? Maybe there is something we don't know. By the same logic above, if Frenchmen are getting center court over Federer and now Federer is playing on the graveyard court against a Frenchman then this casts doubt on favortism to fellow country men. Maybe its just luck of the draw? I wouldn't jump to too many conclusions

What is the big deal??

Last year, he did he play all his matches on center court??

Possibly not, but it happening last year (if it did) to me doesn't make it any better. If I'm an international tourist buying tickets for a slam, and I buy tickets for Centre-Court, it's fair to say I expect to see the #1 & #2 play their matches on Centre-court!

It's even fairer to say when I'm going to a slam to see a player (potentially) making history, I very much expect to see them on Centre-court!

I agree that Center Court ticket holders have the expectations to see the worlds best on center court, and that history is being made, but he still has a long road ahead of him. History will be made on the Sunday he takes the title, maybe this year or whenever.

The organizers maybe felt it was better to mix it up a little and exhibit their 2 young prospects, which I think is really sad but what can we do??

I don't think that Federer cares or that he will lose his chances of winning the whole event. Unfortunately tennis is becoming a commercial entertainment and some decisions are made for money and sales in general.

I believe that Chartier tickets are already sold and that the Lenglen tickets are still available for tomorrow so the clever French decided to place Federer last on court Lenglen so that all the people buy tickets on that court (more money) and since it's going to rain tomorrow he won't play anyway and they can place him on center court the day after that or repeat the same process to sell more tickets.

The other explanation is that they assume that Federer will crush his opponent very fast and that an all French match between their favorite Gasquet and Monfils will draw the French crowd more then the Federer vs Unknown match.

Some woman who is not playing awfully bad as well and who is a current #1 and even a champ there is playing on Lenglen as well. So may be it's not such insult after all.

For me it's more about respecting the people buying the tickets.

Good point. $$$ for empty seats makes sense.

I think it's an insult to the fans.... If you pay for Chartrier seats, you expect to see both Henin & Fed on Chartrier!

Sorry for confusing you, tennis hand. I meant to say that I don't think this a a big deal.

And so you made your point by showing that this issue pales in comparison to WWII?

This is a tennis discussion board. By definition almost every tennis & non-tennis issue will pale in comparison to WWII.

Let's see, since you've been here, you've created threads including one about you meeting Fabrice Santoro, and another thread entitled Free Tony the Tiger wristband. They're Grr-eat!.

Care to highlight how those topics are a big deal, or not, in comparison to WWII?

I thought you were getting pretty worked up about it, so I thought I would diffuse the situation w/ one of my crowd-pleasing jokes.

Boy, you've spent a lot of time researching me, haven't ya? For that...I'm sorry...

It takes so much time to check what threads another user has started, so so much.

Or maybe it doesn't.

Maybe you could go somewhere else and please them with your jokes, that is, the jokes you had to explain....

Because when Federer plays, there is normally a full stadium crowd supporting him. So if he's put on Suzanne Lenglen, people will buy the tickets.

Like many said, no big deal, but on the other hand imagine you have tickets for Chatrier court and hope to see Federer but get to see "some" French guys nobody cares about...

That happened to me 3 or 4 years ago when I had to exchange my Chatrier tickets because they scheduled Clement and another French unknown guy and on Court No 1 they had Kuerten, Costa and another very interesting match...

Fortunately we could exchange all our tickets but it took me at least an hour to do so...

At the *FRENCH Open*, there are no "French guys nobody cares about" - especially when one is a seed and the other is a former top 25 teen known for exciting tennis.

Can you imagine the US Open putting someone like Agassi on the outer courts just so the higher-seeded Davydenko could take Ashe court? Does a Russian coming to the US wanting to see Davydenko at the US Open have a valid complaint? Absolutely Not.

Nope - people who buy centre court tickets have absolutely no *right* (or even expectation) to see Federer play - they have the right to see whoever the organizers want the collective crowd to see. They should have no grievances whatsoever.

Federer doesnt deserve to be on center court in the french open, make him play on court 15

Thu schedule, again rather strange. Half of all the competitors scheduled to play on Chartrier are French. Of these, only one is seeded-Amelie Mauresmo (5).

When's the last time two unseeded players played on centre court, while the no.2 men's seed, the "claycourt king", two-time defending champion, is on another court??

I don't see what the big deal is. French Open will give preference in court positioning to the home crowd favorites... this has been true at Wimbledon, US Open, etc as well. Furthermore, he is still on a show court (Lenglen).

This is logically equivalent to making the Wimbledon number 1 seed play on Court 1 (used to be a show court) at Wimbledon... absolutely no big deal.

As long as the timings of the day aren't manipulated to give players advantages, its perfectly fine.

What *is* outrageous is the US Open @$$holes manipulating the order of the semis on Super Saturday to let someone like Agassi get more resting time before the final. Agassi asked them "give me the first semi" and they just gladly obliged ... thankfully Federer shut those chumps up anyways (This occurred in USO 2005 IIRC).

Placing players on different courts according to player popularity is the right of the tournament organizers. Manipulating match schedules to benefit a player is an outrage. Hopefully the organizers will stay away from the latter.
Totally agree with this post.
Ferrero being tired out and playing a fresh Roddick in 2003 (US Open) was beyond belief too.

Yeah it's ridiculous, but at least Nadal's match is not scheduled last...
