Federer pulls out!!?

Yup Just heard the news, federer has pulled out.. could this be the first time in as many years that he's pulled out mid-way thru a tournament?

how did he hurt his back? did he say?

Is it due to serving or bending low on volleys etc.?
I thought his serve used mostly knee bend..

I had a feeling he would. Think about it this way: he may prefer Blake to qualify for TMC rather than Potro or Simon.
Why, when he is significantly better than and odds on to beat all of them? I don't think it makes a difference to him and he certainly does not fear any of them.

OH GREAT,,,, Now Federer has another excuse to explain why he will have a POOR start to next season and lose to Nadal at french open and Wimbledon...:)

Take off your eyecaps, Federer doesn't make excuses, he takes his losses like a man. Federer fans make the excuses for him...

Damn! I was counting on Federer taking out Blake so Del Potro can secure his place in TMC

yes. here's the post-match (nalby d. andy) graphic from atp tv....

big deal Federer took a page from the William's books, also in the inteview he mentioned having a stiff back that was not responding to treatment, so why risk it with the TMC coming up.

Federer is a guy who knows how to manage his career. If you want to see a guy who doesn't know how, he is on centre court right now getting pummelled by Davydenko.

agree with that. u have to feel for rafa. can u blame a guy who is always plays 100% ? well, it is better to burn out than to fade away, no ?

interesting point the commentator made on the telecast. the claycourters rarely dominate for years. come to think of it, he is prolly right.

That is a lame comment. BTW Nadal has just pulled out too because of an injury. Saying he does not know how to manage his carreer is delusional. He already got more out of it than anyone would have expected a few years ago.

The problem is the schedule is too packed and there are too many HC tournaments, and it does not look as if that were to change in the near future, so we can only expect more pull outs.

Federer to pull out of Masters finals as well, i heard it on the blogs. He wants to concentrate on the Australian open and going for the record slams. and does not want to risk serious injury by playing again this year.

He'd lose a lotta pts if he did that. Maybe he wants to make last yr his last great run at number 1? I think he should play it out if its just a stiff back, then maybe pull out at shanghai after 1 match.

Yes, too many hard court tournaments that Nadal wouldn't win anyway. Nadal does wonderful in the beginning of the year on slow hard courts, but get him on a fast court and he's toast before the finals.

Real disappointment, I was hoping to watch some great tennis tonight with both Nadal-Davydenko and Federer-Blake, which won't be the case this time around. Murray out as well so we'll have another 'unexpected winner' this year. I've got my money on Nalbandian now.

Blogs is blogs, he said in an interview that he is hopeful to play at the masters cup.I trust more from his own saying then some damn blog.

He HOPES tooo ?? doesn't sound very promising, when tennis player uses word Hope. it sounds like he was just saying what people wants to hear.

Maqs, Federer can do that with Wimbledon alone, but obviously, he won't have to get the new slams record that way.

wow, all top 4 seeds are now out. djoker to tsonga in 3rd round..the score was 6-4,1-6,6-3, correct?

i didnt catch the Nalbo-Murray match, but it was at like i think 2-2 when i went to school, got back 1 hour 40 minutes later and nad-davy had just started.

fed pulls out, and nadal retires from injury. ATP should get the picture now.

I sort of like what the WTA is doing next year -- the only change the so-called "road map" that I agree with: they will have 2 YEC -- one more prestigious than the other. In a way, it is not too different from having a UEFA Champs' League and UEFA Cup.

For the ATP, I would like to see TMC include grandslam winners and the top 4 ranks in the ATP Race.
For the second level YEC, I would like to see grandslam finalists and ATP Race ranks 5, 6, 7, and 8.
Of course there will be overlaps, and players can't qualify for both events.

Federer and Blake are good friends. I am pretty sure Fed handed Blake the match to boost his masters cup chances. I expect Roddick to do the same if he gets back Tsonga.

LOL. That's a good theory.

After Roddick beats Tsonga.

"I can't play today because I have a back injury. That Mohammad Ali wannabe packs a punch!"

So you are in the Fed camp? Mirka, is that you? :) Friends? In individual sport like tennis, friendship and $0.50 will get you a bad cup of coffee - and a trip back to the real world teaching overweight housewives to hit and giggle...

LOL. That's a good theory.
I'm with you. By that 'theory' Fed let Rafa win Wimby. And Rafa will return the favor at RG in '09. :)

Nadal went out and played a set of tennis when he was obviously in no shape to do so. He played doubles in a tournament when it was completely pointless to do so. I'm just being real man. Federer wakes up with a stiff back and says "I'm not playing today, not important enough." Nadal says "I'm tired, the season is too long, hmm I think I'll play doubles too.":-?

On the contrary if he had really been able to manage his career to his best advantage and his health then he would have a better imune system.
